Our strike is imminent, and we’ve launched a new site where you can learn more. @NewYorker runs on union labor, and there are as many reasons to fight for a fair contract as there are members of our shop. In our own words, learn why we are ready to strike:

We are pleased that @condenast has quietly instituted a salary floor of $56.5k/year for all U.S. employees. Like expanded parental leave, vacation rollover, and ending NDAs, this change is a result of our union’s wins, not a goodwill gesture by Condé. That’s the union difference.

Compensation: Wage increases of more than 10% for most @newyorkerunion members, and of up to 63% for some. A salary floor of $55,000, which will increase to $60,000 by 2023. Guaranteed annual raises of 2% to 2.5%, increasing over the life of the contract.

Thank you, @BernieSanders!
I stand with @newyorkerunion workers walking out today and fighting for a first union contract. The New Yorker should sit down with its workers and negotiate a fair contract in good faith.

Today @newyorkerunion is undertaking a half-day work stoppage. We demand a contract that reflects the value of our labor and the principles in our pages, and the foundation of that contract is #JustCauseNoExceptions.

.@NewYorker management came to the table empty-handed Wednesday, and, a couple of hours after we broke for a caucus, they told us they would not be providing any of the 20+ counterproposals we’re waiting on, aborting a bargaining session that was scheduled to last a full day.

These gains are the direct result of collective action—including a credible strike threat—proving that when we stand together and fight, we win. With these agreements, we have laid a foundation that will raise standards at @NewYorker, at @CondeNast, and throughout our industry.

.@newyorker/@condenast management must meet us at the table next week ready to bargain in good faith over wages and other economic items, and to make efficient progress toward the contract our members deserve. Our members expect significant movement and will be watching.

.@AOC and @ewarren know that at-will employment is unjust. They know that just cause—which prevents unfair firings—is the cornerstone of a strong union contract. That’s why they’re withdrawing from this event unless @NewYorker agrees to this basic worker protection.

We’re back at the table on Wednesday to continue bargaining over wages. Here are some more testimonies from members that show why the status quo doesn’t work, and why our members are demanding that @newyorker and @condenast do better:.

Nearly eight months after we gave @newyorker and @condenast a just-cause proposal enshrining basic job protections, we finally got a response. It’s not good. Management wants to be able to discipline or fire employees for any reason, or for no reason at all.

.@newyorker and @condenast management said they “heard” our members’ testimonials about the need for fairer wages, but the company’s untenable proposals, unpreparedness, and unwillingness to bargain in good faith show disrespect for us as workers. We won’t let this stand.

Last week, we made clear to @NewYorker management that their wage proposal was an insult. At the bargaining table today, they stuck to their position. They also failed to provide the information and the full set of economic counterproposals we need in order to respond.

We’re happy to hear that Felicia Sonmez has been reinstated. Her ordeal shows why due process is so important for newsroom employees facing discipline, and why our union is fighting so hard to include strong just-cause language in our contract.
The Washington Post has determined our colleague Felicia Sonmez did not violate the company’s social media policy and has reinstated her.

On the unlivable wages at @newyorker, a publication that is, by many accounts, thriving financially:

.@newyorker tends to hire highly educated workers, which means many of our members have substantial student-loan debt that they cannot hope to pay down with the extremely low salaries the company offers:

Yesterday, we got another wage counter from @newyorker/@condenast management. They proposed raising our salary floor to a lackluster $50K—we proposed $65K—along with an annual 1% general wage increase. This is not nearly enough to bring the kind of change our workplace needs.
2
30
249
The fact that no @NewYorker manager on the company’s bargaining committee has even tried to defend their wage proposal suggests that management is trying to get us to agree to a framework they know is unreasonable. We’re not going to bargain against ourselves.

17
238
After months of negotiations, management has proposed raising the salary floor from $60,000 to $61,500. Our proposed minimum is $67,000: a fair baseline for the rising cost of living. Prestige can’t feed us; we want fair pay for everyone at The @NewYorker, and we want it now.

Today we’re releasing a summary of our recent pay study. Based on data @condenast supplied in September, 2020, the study is a snapshot of our union at a moment in time, but its findings resonate with many present and past @newyorker employees’ experiences.

We stand in solidarity with our @condenast colleagues who are bravely speaking out about the editors & execs who contribute to racism and discrimination within our company. If Condé is “dedicated to creating a diverse, inclusive and equitable workplace,” it must do the following:

56
238
Under pressure from our members, @newyorker/@condenast management did some homework for a change, bringing 9 of the 20+ counter-proposals they owed us to yesterday’s bargaining session. But they also proposed to retain an unreasonable amount of control over employees’ lives.
3
40
230
We are troubled by @newyorker management’s ongoing dismissal of our just-cause proposal, which would give employees due process before discipline or dismissal. Management claims to be interested in treating its employees with fairness and respect, but its actions show otherwise.

.@newyorker/@condenast management say employees could request more time for bereavement, and likely wouldn’t be denied, but a contract is meant to build humanity into our workplace at a structural level—not to keep workers reliant on the good will of individual bosses.

On the need to maintain outside employment in order to make ends meet, even after years of working at @newyorker:

.@newyorker and @condenast are bargaining to enshrine the status quo. If the status quo worked for our members, we wouldn't have unionized.
