9 years and 6 archives later, this arrived on my doorstep today. It was an absolute privilege to work with
@NYUpress
on this book. Official release: June 22
My dad humor is a problem, y’all 🤦🏻 Today in class I said that Prohibition leading up to the 18th Amend had been brewing for quite some time.

It’s a sad day when any liberal arts college closes, but especially when it’s the one you teach at. It’s been a meaningful, worthwhile 8 years with some incredible students and colleagues.
Used
@JemarTisby
’s Color of Compromise in a first-year history course this semester. It was the perfect text to help my students think historically and justly.
Very grateful to be able to continue my work as a historian this next year. I’ve accepted a 1-year post teaching undergrad and grad students at the University of Cambridge. Eager to work alongside
@camericanist
faculty and take part in the life of the university.
As his literary agent, I would like to share that Nick has a contract now with

If suspending change over time is allowed, I like to flip this argument and point out historical positions of Republicans that don't square with current Republicans and
@DineshDSouza
(e.g. Lincoln's pro-immigration position in 1864 and Ike's support for refugee resettlement).
That moment when you see your book in the library where you did your graduate work! Much time was spent in that space working on those chapters.

Just under 3 months now until my book comes out! If you've got questions about white U.S. Protestant responses toward immigrants, refugees, and pluralism during the 20c, consider buying a copy.

Had one of those surreal moments in the archives today while doing research for a new project. I got to look through early drafts of James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time. A special thanks to
@SchomburgCenter
for the work you do.

If you’re teaching a course next spring relating in some way to twentieth century U.S. immigration, social policy, religion, or culture, consider assigning my book. Happy to chat with your class virtually as well.

"During a time period when women were praised for their delicate manners, petite frames, and soft-spoken dispositions, these women’s fearless dedication to social justice and equity was anything but polite."
It’s so surreal to be signing copies of the book! These are for the
@EasternNazarene
Board of Trustees. Let me know if you have a copy you want signed (though it’s not going to increase the value any 😉).

As a historian and Christian, was struck by the significance of the Incarnation within history when I saw this today at the MFA in Boston. "Rest on the Flight into Egypt" by Luc Olivier Merson.
Grateful for the opportunity to contribute a chapter to a forthcoming volume on American Protestantism with
@CambridgeUP
, edited by Jennifer Woodruff Tait and
@JasonEVickers
. Always a thrill to review copy edits!
Thrilled to be teaching a survey of the History of Christianity this semester. Looking forward to diving with my students into the work of

,
@sinanantoon
, Noll, Frykholm, and Tomkins.

Was delighted to find out that a church reprinted in their bulletin a Christian Century review of my book. My hope all along was that the book would be a resource both inside and outside the academy.

Had two separate book discussions today, and I’m blown away by the level of student engagement. All in the middle of a pandemic. It’s a privilege to work with

students.
Hey friends, it’s now 2 years old, but if you still want to buy a copy of my book, now’s a good time. Amazon has two copies left at the moment and they’ve slashed the price by $10. Really have appreciated all your support these last two years in getting this book out there!
Well, I know what primary source I'm using the next time I teach the history of Religion and American Culture. Hoping my students will be able to unravel all the cultural baggage and civil religion embedded in the Pence

speech.

“Pruitt has masterfully documented and detailed an unexplored dimension of Protestant social Christianity in action….His book deserves a wide audience.” Honored to have

Driving from Texas to Massachusetts via Deep South and East Coast over the next week. Going to keep a Confederate flag count. Surprisingly saw only 2 while driving across much of TX today. Might also need to count “Trump Won” and “Trump 2024” flags.
Attended a great webinar earlier hosted by

As many of us face end-of-the-semester and pandemic stress, remember to extend grace and “if possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” Romans 12:18
James Baldwin understood the burden of history: "perhaps the life of the world is held together by invisible chains of memory and loss and love....And we can only repossess them in our minds. Perhaps this is what the old folks meant...when they counseled us to keep the faith."
While right-wing Christian nationalism includes anti-immigrant fervor as a bedrock principle, Pruitt shows how even a diminished liberal Protestantism can find a prophetic path through welcoming diversity. Robert Shaffer reviews Nicholas T. Pruitt.
The first half of our conversation with
@nickphistory
, Assistant Prof. at Eastern Nazarene College, is up! We hear some great reflections on the grad school journey & begin a discussion of the mainline Protestant relationship to immigration.
Sitting at a restaurant on a Friday night. Near my table sat four families, one Asian American and another African American. One spoke what I think was Spanish/Portuguese and the other Russian. As I walked out, I passed three women in hijabs entering. This is the American dream.
