This is a great article. I’ve been toying with writing on book on Protestant spiritual formation for a bit, and this article does a great job of diagnosing what’s wrong with many current attempts at spiritual formation and pointing a path forward

Usually what’s decried as the spiritual shortcomings of Protestantism looks more like the spiritual lack of 90s/early 2000s American ev. subculture, not anything resembling the Protestant tradition

I once heard a distinguished Reformation historian quip that he thinks Amy is the greatest living American scholar of the Reformation. I don’t disagree. She’s genius. She’s also wonderfully humane and generous. Her endorsing my book was a dream come true for me.

The Meeter Center wishes to honor and celebrate the contribution of colleagues in Reformation studies who are transitioning into retirement. In October 2024, we honored Dr. Max Engammare (Geneva) with a special round-table at the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference.

@carlosalcaraz @DjokerNole Carlos, I’ve been a Novak fan his whole career, but you’re a joy to watch. Great battle out there. Can’t wait to see you play for many years to come

They keep saying if @DjokerNole wins #AusOpen he’ll be the only man to beat #3, #2, #1 on the way to a title. Why hasn’t he done this already? He’s usually been one of those top 3! Djokovic has spent 756 weeks or 14.5+ years in the top 3. Simply incredible. GOAT 🐐

@brandon_d_smith @GraySutanto I like much of the impulse behind the term, fwiw. I just think it begs for definition and definitions are often assumed. The historian in me also thinks sometimes GT is used to flatten complexity within the tradition rather than being comfortable with that

“Great Tradition” is also a bit of a wax nose into which people tend to toss their favorite theologians and then assume that everyone else agrees that *those guys* constitute the Great Tradition. But if you scratch deeper there are actually a lot of different Great Traditions

@confessinmill They could be but they are used in ways that obfuscate and often in place of a good argument for the truth of particular positions.

My "The Reformation of the Literal" comes out 6 days from today. Learn about the literal senses (plural) of the Reformation, how the reformers tackled typology and allegory w/OT prophecy, Jewish exegetical influence of the reformers, etc. etc.

@FredFredSanders I’m reading him constantly for my Ref Comm on Scripture vol. on Ezra/Neh/Esth. I am pretty impressed by how well versed he seems in the tradition (he might be using intermediate sources too, but he’s still a good read)
