One of you nice folks suggested I've used the word Hitler too often for the Twitter algorithm's liking, coupled with the odd complaint, so I'll have to lay off it for a while, so I'll leave a few tool share for anyone who is met with the 'Ireland supported the Nazis' bullshit

I have been constantly assailed with 'it inexcusable for Ireland not to join Britain in war with Germany'. I've tried to tell them about the context of the start of the war, but they don't seem to get it, so I've put this together to get past 80 years of comfortable retrospect

You lot do go for a massacre. Yet Drake and Norreys weren't even the worst. That title (in my opinion) goes to the murder machine himself, Arthur Chichester. He had a penchant for the old-ultra violence against civilians, gloated about it & moaned he couldn't kill enough Irish

On the anniversary of Drake and Norreys' massacre of civilians on Rathlin, I'll fire this up in case you think the Elizabethan age in Ireland was anything but a blood-soaked shitshow.

Last nights discussion took a turn for the unexpected, then Phil finally got to the point he was dying to make...apparently there's no difference between the IRA and the Irish. Reason if it was ever needed why to leave the study of humanities alone

OTD 1575, Two heroes of Elizabethan history , Francis Drake and John Norreys assaulted and took Sorley Boy McDonnell's castle on Rathlin Island then scoured the island putting every man, woman & child to the sword. Possibly 600 were slaughtered-Essex was well-pleased with result

Where was I today? Only at Burt Castle in Donegal..one of the last numbers on my #nineyearswar bingo card I'd yet to mark off. An O'Doherty stronghold, it was reinforced with modern defences and cannon

Good news folks. I've signed up with @Helionbooks to produce 2 books on #nineyearswar as part of their Retinue to Regiment series. First will cover the years of Irish supremacy to the Battle of the Yellow Ford in 1598. The second will deal with English recovery, Kinsale & more

OTD 1597 James MacSorley MacDonnell annihilated John Chichester's force at the Aldfreck near Carrickfergus. English took umbrage at Scots 'haughty demeanour' & charged, but volleys from concealed Irish shot shattered Chichester's men, he was shot in head and killed #nineyearswar

Oh did you think I forgot? Today's site comes to you from Mellifont Abbey, Co Louth. Founded in the 12th century, it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539. It was the site of Tyrone's submission in 1603

It can be an uphill battle trying to convince people of the sophistication and modern methods of Tyropne's confederation. Recently described to me as 'armed with bows and arrows' , it's not helped when the National Museum Ireland has this.... #nineyeasrwar

Battle of Curlew Pass is often touted as Red Hugh O'Donnell's greatest victory but he missed all the fighting, likely stationed further east where the Gaelic Chieftain statue now stands. Brian O'Rourke and Conor MacDermott deserve the credit, but they weren't paying the annalists

@HeritageIreOPW The author's own words on p.177, take note any who consider themselves Irish 'the Irish were a difficult, willful, obstinate and troublesome race...& generally behaved in a wild, undisciplined manner that Englishmen rightly interpreted as treasonable by nature'. Hmmmm

This makes me laugh every time I see it. Robert Lythe really didn't like Cushendall, Co Antrim, which he described as 'Irlands Arse', didn't need TripAdvisor in 1570s

Well, you seem to dig castles, so how about another? Ballymote in Co Sligo. Built at the start of 14th C, captured by the O'Connors in 1317, then over to MacDermotts the MacDonaghs. It was centre stage during Maguire's attacks in Connacht at the start of the Nine Years War

OTD 1601 Spanish ships appear off the Old Head Kinsale. Juan del Aguila landed 1.7k men and took Kinsale town without resistance. In a week this rose to 3.4k. Spanish secured nearby castles, but defensively Kinsale was terrible ground, Aguila called it 'hoyo' a pit #nineyearswar

OTD 1602 Red Hugh O'Donnell slips his mortal coil in Simancas, Spain. He had travelled to appeal for another army from Philip III, and met with some success, but he took a fever (likely result of a tapeworm) and died. He was buried with full honours in Valladolid #nineyearswar

Asked if Tyrone would have been any better for Irish "subjects" than Elizabeth. Now I don't go in for counterfactual history, there are too many variables. One thing we do know is that he'd have had to work hard to be worse than Elizabeth
