As a woman applying for faculty jobs next year, this map is terrifying. Realistically, I do not feel safe applying to jobs in over half the country. I don't know how I would mentor students in over half the country as they navigate college and life.

I think what is so terrifying, beyond being personally connected to the event in some way, is that as chemists/scientists we all know how common lab conflicts are. And ultimately, we are not really trained on how to mediate conflict... 🧵

This seems like a good time to announce that I am looking for a new postdoc. In the last two months, I've reached out to everyone in my adjacent field in the Bay area - no one has funding. Take-aways: 1) Twitter is not always reflective of the "real world" 2) Please hire me

Recent trends in academia: EVERY SINGLE PI is looking for a postdoc. To retain highly-trained PhDs, we need to treat them as skilled workers, rather than as trainees (who don’t need silly things such as house, children and retirement). It is in the very best interest of every PI!

This article makes a great point, but in my opinion, shoots pass an entirely different one. Why are people doing multiple postdocs, like 3+ postdocs, for periods as long as 8 or 15 years? Do they really end up getting academic jobs after that?
