What’s disappointing is that staff members who held institutions together - especially during a pandemic - aren’t afforded the dignity of fair wages and protected pensions. We won’t be pitted against staff.
Students should be proud of the resilience they’ve shown throughout the pandemic. Further disruption from industrial action is the last thing students want or deserve – which is why today’s industrial action is so disappointing.

I spent 7 years as a youth worker and every single ‘difficult’ young person was a product of their circumstances. Nothing exists in a vacuum. Changing their lives means changing the conditions they live in. Better housing, healthcare, schools, employment etc changes behaviour.

On Armistice Day thousands of us will be marching to call for an armistice. In a functioning democracy, neither the Home Secretary or the police would stop this.
The trade union movement taught me that as we remember the dead we must fight like hell for the living.
Remembrance events must be respected. Full stop.
But the person the PM needs to hold accountable is his Home Secretary. Picking a fight with the police instead of working with them is cowardice.
