We need dedicated and coordinated storm chasing teams in the Central Appalachians.
Here's why. 👇
We average 2 or 3 outbreaks of similar size or larger to last Wednesday's per decade within the Central Apps. Besides last April 2, others that come to mind are 2021, 19, 12, 11 (huge), 02, 1998 (2 back2back), 96, 85 (record), 83, 81, 80, 76, and 74. That's 28% since 1974.

Chasers, tornadoes may be the secondary chase option, especially in the eastern side of the risk. Shelf clouds and- if you know how to identify them- microbursts, work for spotting and cool photos also, and may be the primary option. Don't always NEED a tornado. Go get it, boys.

It's a Tertiary igneous dike. It's not the only one in the area either. There are several to its north and west. Likely feeders for the nearby Cienega or San Felipe volcanic fields.
The Rio Grande Valley is full of extinct volcanoes.

The severe warned cell to the east on the other hand has a NICE little base developing on the southwest flank, with a COPIOUS precipitation shaft on the left side. You can see it tucked behind the foreground cell.

For those of you who don't, 10/21/21 was as about as a surprise tornado outbreak as you can get. 0% tornado risk forecasted until 8 pm, and by midnight, nearly 20 tornadoes touched down.
