As the colder air moves into the forecast area behind the cold front, expect the risk of freezing drizzle to increase. In sheltered locations, where the road and air temperature drop below freezing, there will be a threat of freezing drizzle. Use caution traveling this morning.

A Flood Warning has been issued for Tucker and portions of Preston county in WV, as an ice jam has been reported in Parsons, WV. This is an issue along the Cheat and other creeks/streams as backing up of water or a sudden release of water may result in flooding in the area.

Instability aloft (starting around 7-8kft) is resulting in elevated storms, which is interesting with the fog, stratus, and drizzle in the lower, stable boundary layer. No hazards are expected. but you may hear some thunder! >

We measured a trace for snow depth this morning in Pittsburgh (not depicted in the image). That makes it tied for 26th for length of days of measured snow depth back to 1871. The longest stretch was in 1978 where we had 70 days in a row of snow on the ground.

Warmup next 2 days. Snow and ice melt continues. Slow & steady is best. Storm system will bring rain tonight into Saturday. Uncertainty on rainfall/snow melt. Rain/snow melt should cause rises on streams and creeks. Potential for ice jams. Flood watch continues.

A low pressure system will move into the region by Friday and continue through Saturday. Expect 0.75 to 1.50 inches of rainfall with this system. With the warmer temperatures, the snowpack in place, and the threat of ice jams, there is a legitimate threat of flooding.

This threat is in the highlighted areas. The heaviest rainfall will fall over the southern portions of the area. It is possible there will be some headlines to address the ice along the Allegheny River. Stay tuned for further updates.

The line of snow is pushing southeast. There is still the potential for a snow shower to drop visibility below 2 miles. However, snow accumulation on roads is not likely as the weakening trend of the snow has ensured a limited threat as road temps are still in the mid 30s.

It appears that the line of snow squalls moving across the forecast area as stalled in its southward movement and the current impacts will remain just north and east of Pittsburgh. There has already been a major accident in the Punxsutawney area. Use caution on the roads today.
