‘Tough on crime’ politics is ineffective and expensive. There’s no evidence that knee-jerk responses work to reduce crime, but an abundance of evidence that such approaches harm children by pipelining more into, and warehousing more in, prisons.

Australia is in the midst of a mass imprisonment crisis. For years, governments across the country have parroted the line that prisons support community safety, all to justify spending billions of dollars on prison expansion. But the premise is false.

Victoria's bail laws must change, and they must change now. Victoria has some of Australia’s most dangerous and discriminatory bail laws that needlessly remove parents from their families and funnel them into prisons to be warehoused on remand. #springst

A thread reflecting on who the DPP decides to prosecute (or more importantly - not). Revelations this week that the DPP will not prosecute the police involved in one of the state’s most dizzying scandals speaks volumes about a system that permits police to act with impunity.

Safe access zone laws have just passed the upper house in South Australia and will become law, so women will no longer have to run a gauntlet of abuse and harassment just to see their doctor in SA 🎉 @TammyMLC @SA_AAC

“Our laws currently criminalise behaviours for some people that is completely overlooked for others... People don’t die in custody coming home from the Melbourne Cup, or from a hen’s night.” - @RuthHRLC of @rightsagenda via @perkinsmiki in @theage

Women are overlooked and trapped in WA prisons because they cannot access parole. The WA Government must address this "systemic marginalisation" and reduce the number of women being funelled into prisons as a matter of priority. @abcnews
