I’ve been trying to find a way to describe what its like to be facing the end of your life. While no singular description can do it justice, because of the complexity of the subject, here is my best attempt.
Most people unfortunately have experienced loss and grief. It may be
@historyinmemes
I thought the first heart transplant was in Cape Town South Africa, Dr Barnard. This patient died a few weeks later from pneumonia so didnt live as long as what it is mentioned in this post BUT it was the first.
@RWJBoon
Yes! Absolutely. My friend and I used those plastic folding lawn chairs as both our “couch” and our beds until we could afford actual furniture. It worked man!🤷🏼♀️
@lungareaux
I’ve done that many times, but never with alcohol (just cause no ones asked me for that).
I’m thinking of a COVID patient in the ICU. He’d been there for a while and was getting worse. Wasnt intubated, yet. I knew darn well he probably wasn’t going to survive and ALL he wanted
There is so much that happens to cancer patients that we doctors don't ever see. We can empathize, imagine what it's like but we have no idea until we experience something like the following:
This morning I was having a conversation with my husband over breakfast. He's been
@DrSuneelDhand
That’s nonsense. Listen I agree we cant keep mandates around forever and mitigation strategies should follow data that indicates risk and prevelence however-for high risk individuals and in high risk areas specific rules have to apply. I have cancer, and a single respiratory
@acweyand
I baked a pumpkin pie for my hospitalized patient who was refusing to eat. It was around Thanksgiving and he told me how much he loved pumpkin pie. I brought it in he was so happy. He ate it all over the course of a day or two. Its like he was different man.
These days I dont go anywhere except to medical appointments. I’ve just completed radiation. Up until last week, whenever in the cancer center I still wore a mask. Even though literally NO ONE else did, including staff, I’ve always considered it proper since it was a high risk
@nursekelsey
Yeah its insane. Think about this, pre-COVID no one got hot and bothered by someone wearing a mask. I mean yes, I admit there was a time we all made fun of Michael Jackson for wearing a mask in public but that was it. Certainly no one ever questioned a medical professional for
@SalcedaAlicia
@AerodDr
That’s not necessarily true. Most doctors can do the basics. The problem is simply that we dont usually have the tools we need out in the field. If its just me without equipment etc, then sometimes all I can do is hold someone’s hand🤷🏼♀️. Not because I dont know how to do the other
An absolutely crazy thing happened to me today and I have to share this with you. Its a long story so I do apologize, but its worth it.
First I need to say that I have been in more emergency situations then I can even count. I started working in the medical field (EMS) when I
@TMZ
Terrible behavior, but the other part of the story we should be talking about is the kind neighbor who saw this happen, went over and refilled the bowl with their candy. A prime example not just of what you shouldn’t do, but what you should. Kudos to that neighbor!

What? They have been selling counterfeit mech on canal street for DECADES. Its a well known fact, heck it’s practically a tourist destination for this reason alone. Why are they just now deciding to “crack down” on it?
@Karen81563345
You are right in the peaceful part, I've seen SO many patients who were actively dying yet, they were in total and complete peace. Even though they knew exactly what was happening, they just seemed so okay with it. I always tried to imagine that situation and it was so hard to
@FaumanKaren
I never thought about that, but their family does and I imagine that is unbelievably difficult. I don't know that I would ever be able to do your job. Bless you for what you do! Thanks for your kind words.
@WendyHassonMD
Very sad. Unfortunately it’s what happens when people are just task oriented and dont critically think. Over reliance on monitors. They had tunnel vision.
Do you know how many times I’ve heard from staff and even nurses say “but the sat’s okay.” Monitors serve a purpose but
@DrKnowItAll16
Yeah maybe if you’re going from a 1985 Chrysler K car to the Tesla but certainly not any modern gas powered cars.
You should try driving a manual car without power anything, windows, steering..you’ld be in serious trouble.
@wildestdreams_3
Not weird at all in fact we appreciate those things so much. It’s very thoughtful of you. Especially getting to see someone being able to return to the thing they couldn’t do before. I’d say your doctors would love that!

Earlier in my career, my friends and I as then single female physicians:

That would be unlikely, its apples and oranges meaning the reasons why healthcare workers need to be vaccinated is very different then the reason why vaccination is required for transplant recipients
@spiderko_2
@historyinmemes
Gotcha. It’s still a huge triumph so, not negating that by any means. As a physician, I cant even imagine what they had to go through to be “the first.” And to have it be such a huge success, that’s phenomenal.
I just happened to visit the hospital in Cape Town while on a
@RyanMarino
I agree, more time in nature and less time in the hospital…who wouldn’t agree with that? No one WANTS to be in the hospital unless they really need to be there. Myself included, sort of seems like a nonsensical statement.

I think this “midlevel vs physician” argument is kinda crazy. It’s apples to oranges. Now, I LOVE the NP’s I work with, I’d trust them with my life. And I think we all have stories of that one NP who is better than that one MD, as specific individuals. I’ve also known nurses who
