I’m the first generation on my mom’s side who didn’t have to pick cotton, although I did pick pecans and fig leaves as a teenager which was just as laborious. That means my children are truly the first generation in our family’s American history since slavery who haven’t had to do field labor.

Checkmate! At yesterday’s chess club, it was just my daughter and me, so we played each other. As a dad, it was awesome to watch her skills grow. She’s not beating me yet, but her thinking and decision-making are really developing—enough that we’re talking philosophy & connecting the game to real life scenarios. Yesterday made me grateful for two men who have since passed on but played a crucial role in me even getting to have this moment: 1. My grandfather who had the patience to teach me the game when I was a kid. 2. ‘Coach Bruce’: The chess instructor we hired to teach the neighborhood kids…his passion for the game was crucial in engaging a new generation primarily stimulated by digital products.
