ppl wildly underestimate just how difficult it is to close LPs into emerging venture funds, despite the fact that emerging managers empirically outperform (EFMs’ outperformance is particularly showcased in vintages deployed during distressed economic conditions such as these)
2023 was rough for managers esp new managers.
3 written commitments from LPs (i.e. email saying "we would like to commit $ X" + paperwork) did not materialize for us. Would have been my 3 biggest LPs and made up ~40% of AUM.
