Dear chemical and ag retail companies,
When purchasing chemical, can we get a pair of chemical gloves rather than the free hat?
Thanks
Signed:
Every farmer with 8000 hats and only two left handed chem gloves…
Remember kids:
Beauty fades, but you’re gonna be eating sandwiches for a long time… Find a girl that makes good sandwiches!
(Mine just happens to be beautiful too!)
So… we bought some bred cows…
And I told my wife she could pick the tags.
Style, colour, whatever, as long as they all look similar to make sorting easy.
She picked pink ✅
Hand printed numbers ✅
And a name for each cow on the back 🙃

Another 1st for McRae Land & Livestock this year. Rather than spreading raw manure in the spring, we composted it and are now spreading in the fall.
Less material to haul, less compaction in the field, and hopefully he same or better nutrients to next years crop!
Did the water infiltration test for the 1st time on my farm tonigh and I was BLOWN AWAY with the results!
Planned grazing paddock:
1st inch 7.9 sec
2nd inch +1:21
3rd inch + 2.55
Continuous grazed
1st inch 5:00+
2nd inch 10:00 and didn’t gon in!

Looking for an experienced air drill operator to come run our drill for 4ish days, so I can run it at night.
It’s a nice setup rig, and my wife is a great cook! Includes lodging. We are near Brandon, MB.

Today was the big sort!
Lessons learned:
1. Corrals designed for 100 head don’t work as well with 508 head in them,
2. If things aren’t going well, STOP! And re-group. Give the cows a rest for 15 min and try again
3. I have some amazing help that puts up with my crazy ideas!
Unofficial results from my
#canola
variety trial.
Will comment on each variety below, but some general observations:
Pod integrity of the Invigour variety’s is dramatically better than all others.
Top 1.11 ac strips were on oat stubble with a lot of volunteer oats
Finished harvesting the best field of oats I have ever grown last night!!
CDC Nasser oats. I think the yield monitor is a bit optimistic, but it was still very good!
Interesting part: in the starter phos trial, 40lbs of 11-52-0 out yielded 80lbs!
Some days test you and build your character, I figure today has been one of them days! Saved some calves from freezing tho, and looks like the storm has passed.

Hello little interseeded cover crop! Have some sunlight! Hopefully you have kept the mycorrhizae fungi alive in this canola crop! Now grow up big and strong for my cows to eat this fall!
We do mostly daily moves while

to increase forage utilization and have even manure distribution.
At McRae Land & Livestock, we may not always have our sh!t together, but at least we have our poop in a group!

: when you take off your sweater to shovel the bin bottom, don’t set it near the grain vac intake.... if the hose disconnects, it will suck it up and break a shear pin.
In other news, a new
@Carhartt
sweater would be a great Christmas gift for me!
Out checking fields tonight, this was interseeded grazing corn last year. I can’t believe how good this soil looks! This used to be my worst field. Now, worms everywhere and rich black crumbly soil!

Harvest is complete for another year at McRae Land & Livestock! Happy it’s in the bin, but sad that it’s over… wish we had more to do! Corbin sure enjoyed his first year in the combine!
3rd day interseeding corn. Gut tells me this week or next week will be the best timing. I think it’s around V6? (Not a corn guy so input would be appreciated!)
It is quite an honour to be selected as one of the Top 50 in Canadian Ag. It’s hard not to feel a little bit out of my league among this group! Thanks to
@Agribition
for putting this program together, and thanks to all of the many people who have supported me along the way!

Marginal land may be unsuitable for cultivated cropland, but that doesn’t stop beef cattle from converting this land into high quality, nutritious beef protein.
Weaned heifer calves last week, off of corn grazing with their moms.
Keep them in the yard for 3-6 weeks,
Then turn them back into the corn with their moms, but supplement the calves with alfalfa hay in a creep pen.
On a scale of 1 to Barrel Racer, how crazy is this idea?
Got started seeding yesterday!
Cameras in the drill sure are nice, especially for doing trials, I was able to see exactly when the seed ran out!
Hope everyone has a great seeding season!!

continues. About 10 acres of corn left. All the custom grazing cows have gone home, Just my purebred cows left. Have them on a small paddock to minimize field pugging.

Every year I like to do one trial that scares me. This year it’s seeding canola/tall fescue direct into grazing corn residue...

PSA: pioneer hydraulic couplers can close off and restrict flow even if they have been working fine all day.
Enough to lower fan speed and plug your drill.
Also, if you need a $1600 fan motor for a NH P series air cart, I now own 2 of them.

Here is the update on my polycrop annual forage mix. Lots of potential, just not a great year for it. And I learned (again) how crucial seed to soil contact is. I will defiantly be tweaking this and trying again next year!

eShepherd is a GPS-enabled neckband with web applications that enable you to

There is some sick, twisted part of me that just loves to dust off the carhartts and neck rag, to go out in the rain, snow, or somehow other terrible weather, to work with cows. Seriously. Deep down I just love it!

Relay crop under oats. IRG, Crimson and red clover. Seems to be more clover here than under the canola. Also quite a bit of volonteer annual rye grass from last year. Should make for good grazing!! Looks like there will be some oats here too!
