You guys? We did it. The stupidest thing I have ever been a part of. In the 21st century. Who removes math from school? SF. Finally after TEN years Algebra I returns to middle school next year.
I've been watching the box office for Black Panther as if I was going to profit personally. Because? In a sense? I do. Not in money (sadly) but in hope. Post Black Panther? I think there is a much greater chance for more representation across the board.
@SebastianMurdoc
"Ettel is seen on the phone, then ducks down out of sight after seeing she is being recorded. Ettel later told HuffPost she ducked to “find a quiet place where I could hear.” But she said she was bluffing about calling the cops. So what did she need to hear?
@mrs_g_rider
Awful. I don't understand the mentality that once the kids are a certain age they no longer are your responsibility. Mine are in their 20s. To this day if they need me I'm there. No cost.
@realDonaldTrump
you didn't immediately deploy anything and there is a paper trail to show that. Pence called them up which your acting secretary of defense corroborates. Nice of you to incite your supporters and then back away from them as you realize the gravity of what you did.
This. If you are not watching
#BlackLightning
you are missing something very special. This is very different from the current superhero fare on the CW.
This is really upsetting. It took ten years for the district to admit harm. Nobody is held accountable. The people making all those nonsensical presentations saying how wonderful this was are still in charge of the math dept. Boaler is distancing herself. Lot of CYA.
3/3 Right now I'm at a loss for words, but I'm happy the district made this presentation.
It just amazes me that a decade's worth if kids were harmed by these changes and no one is being held accountable. Let's not let that happen again.
@tansanDOTeth
Yes they delayed it to 9th. They lied saying 40 percent failed when it was in 8th. 4 percent failed. Not 40. It took public data requests to expose this. Jo Boaler is the person who pushed this ridiculous idea.
@minilek
disgraceful. she used SF public schools as her experiment (no algebra I in middle). Lying about failure rate. 4.2% failed last year it was in 8th NOT 43% as she says. I bet it was a misplaced decimal. Ten years later it is a miserable failure and SF is bringing it back to 8th
I will never vote for Haney or Norton ever because Algebra. Both of them talked down to me ( Electrical Engineer ) about math. And I will never forget the condescending smug behavior. My son is a electrical engineer now and daughter caught up in that mess is a biotech major.
SF's failed math experiment was *not* about equity. Any more than a con person telling us they love us while all the while in it for themselves, truly cares. This was a con. They lied about success, stonewalled data requests. They had to pushed to the wall to admit any of it
@ArmandDoma
Such a cringe article to read. Oh look, the zoo with a harmless soccer mom who has to go to jail. Never mind all the damage she did to Gibbons, Tyler Schultz, Cheung. This was more than fleecing the rich. The most interesting part was a friend of hers saying don't believe her.
The SF math debacle is a lesson to the nation. This is not about equity. We need more diversity in STEM. This is about, believe or not, the anatomy of a con. There will never be magic solutions to serious problems.
I am still really angry. San Francisco almost destroyed the nation with their lies about the Boaler experiment.
@Stanford
does nothing. She is to math what Calkins is to literacy.
@TSTheErasTour
@Ticketmaster
you should refund all those junk fees added on and turn off dynamic pricing (scalping by any other name still stinks) for the general sale. This is what I hope
@amyklobuchar
investigates. Not why the website crashed which is a complete red herring.
@_john_hodgins
@HeerJeet
This!!! I am of South Asian heritage born in the US in the 60s when there were few. I was in my 20s when Simpsons began. I complained from day one. There was not enough infrastructure to be heard. I'm glad there is now.
@CandiceLen
It was a long strange trip but none of this would have been exposed without an internal unsung hero who was trying to calculate the 40 % failure rate and could not. Because they tried the document was created and it had to be given when requested. Huge.
2013 -2014 in my son's 8th algebra class we were warned of the upcoming debacle. I thought no, they won't do this. I sent emails to
@rpnorton
and
@MattHaneySF
and the superintendent saying this is going to hurt people with no choices. 8th algebra is a gateway to STEM
Long strange trip indeed. Ten years later. Let's never ever do this again shall we?? Many in 2nd group without Algebra I in middle are graduating college this spring. My daughter included. I paid to play and it was worth it.
Last weekend I bought TS promotional items
@AMCTheatres
was offering for my daughter. I got a defective cup.
@AMCHelps
was absolutely fantastic in fixing this for me. They sent me replacement and friendship bracelet and cards. Bravo to the really helpful people working there
Rather incredible if you think about it. A lesson in narcissism. Thousands upon thousands were derailed. The 2014 BoE and many central office folks walked away. Nobody is responsible for one of the most damaging policies in my time at the district. Gaslighting at its finest.
@JoyAnnReid
white feminism front and center. I've lost couple of white girlfriends over this nonsense as I try to explain that life is different for us.
Ronald Reagan destroyed our social services fabric. I get so mad blaming disadvantaged families. Reagan deregulated everything (including children's programs hence cartoons to sell toys), destroyed half way houses.
@thebestofclois
Whenever I see things like this I think about what Lois Lane had to endure in the past. I will always be on the side of silver age Lois!
Action Comics 850. Kurt Busiek wrote this best flashback scene. I want to see this. On screen. It shows what the triangle for two should and could be. Don't tell me Superman is boring.
@thejessicaraven
OMG. People might mock PTA but I was on the board for years with my kids in elementary. It matters. All politics are local. I hope she doesn't win.
I think teaching consent has to start from a very young age. This isn't about sex. This is about boys understanding no from girls. No. I don't want to play with you. No. You can't have my toy. Years ago my son went to a co-op preschool.
@ZacharyLevi
MHO? Depends on the forum. Men talking to other men wrt sexism. White people to other white people wrt racism? That is one thing. People tend to get less defensive when a fellow guy or same race talks to them. However? If talking about leading over a poc/woman/LGBT? I disagree.
I was asked if I thought if SF had good intentions when they delayed Alg I 10 years ago. No. No I do not. I think it is time to stop giving conmen the benefit of the doubt. They say pretty words but as the old saying goes actions speak louder. Walk with me..
Now that I have your attention? Jo Boaler was wrong about
@SFUSDMath
8th grade algebra fail rate. 2013/14 Last with 8th algebra. 4% failed. 100 students. Not 40% as she claimed.
@StanfordEd
@Tristanshouts
@ClaraJeffery
They lied. Removed an exit exam. Still couldn't reproduce claims they made. CPRA response. 100 out of 2,359 students (4.2 percent, not 40 percent as the district implied) failed Algebra I in 2013-14. eighth grade year of the class of 2018 last year before Algebra I was delayed.
"if you had reached out" Dr Nelson DID reach out. I was at a webinar where Dr Nelson was in the chat airing similar concerns (as many of us) over lack of diversity in framework authorship. Also this open letter he co authored.
A
@Stanford
professor just threatened me with police. After BBQ Becky, Permit Patty, Golfcart Gail, and all the memes, we now have Retweet Rachel. Public advisory: don't call the cops on black people for no reason. Black people disagreeing with you on Twitter is not a crime.
@necrosofty
@leonardchang
"the rest of us" That says it right there. They want it through the eyes of what they think "those people" are. Diversity through the eyes of the non diverse.
I see myself as a progressive. Yet not aligned with this city's version. I don't agree with the sf boe at all. Especially around math. I'm going to go to my grave around math. Haney, Norton, Collins, etc argued I was wrong. I'm not. Removing options hurts those without any.
@cathyrusson
After Chris Watts and all those videos with his little girls nothing surprises me. Narcissistic people put their needs over everything else.
I asked
@MattHaneySF
and
@rpnorton
years ago to do their fiduciary duty before removing 8th algebra. The gaslighting was strong. 7 years later? I told you so. This is why I will never vote for either of them ever for anything. No. It was not an opinion.
This isn't "equity vs merit" This slide tells the damning story that this *hurt* equity. This did not work. It never worked. But it took ten years for the district to admit it.
Not here for this
@matthaneysf
Do you remember 8 yrs ago meeting with parents and mansplaining? Telling group of parents, some of us with degrees in STEM (ME) how we were wrong and you right? Here we are. Your toxic BoE decisions still reverberating
@minilek
@Stanford
Performative equity. I am so sorry this happened. It's public record. She made a contract with a public school district that the board has to approve in public because of Brown Act laws(why they approved it is another matter).
Superman 654 (written by Kurt Busiek) is missing in this list and it should be included. I think it's one of the best modern look at the married working couple. Taking him off the title was a huge mistake.
There were no high failure rates when Algebra 1 was taken in 8th. 100 out 2,359 failed. That is 4%. It's just been repeated so long for years that people just believe it
I hate the premise that when Lois dies Clark goes off the rails. I just do not think he would. These types of stories put Lois in the role of his emotional keeper. Instead of a partner. When/if she dies? I feel he'd honor her memory. This is why Injustice bothers me so much
And it is. They dismissed me with such condescension. I see a lot of white people talking over everyone else saying you're wrong. I'm not. One child is an engineer, the other is a sophomore STEM.
"Jelani Nelson, a professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences at UC Berkeley and a leading critic of weakening math requirements through course substitution, put the blame not on policy changes but on the course-approval process."
I can not quote this enough. SF ran around the country lying about their success. Districts believed them because education reporters breathlessly report it all as fact. It was nonsense. We need Back and Latinx engineers and scientists. Algebra I in 8th is the gateway.
My Algebra teacher was Mrs. Kaid at the Garret Morgan Cleveland School of Science, an inner city school of working class students that was 95% Black and Brown.
We all learned Algebra in the 8th grade. It was hard for many of us. Some people failed, but then they passed. No
@AlyssaMastro44
How much longer is this going to go on? Seems like we've aged a thousand years. This fool driven by pathological hatred for President Obama
Welcome to the party. You all were huge enablers of this mess. Your education "reporter" refused to ask basic questions like "40% you say, might I see the raw data?" (as did others like
@EdSource
) This should never have gone on as long as it has. The grift was in plain sight.
@Babe_of_Swolls
@FabulousCthulhu
Yes! I think that is why some have hard time as kids hit puberty. Because can't let go of control. When my kids were babies and I'd complain about tantrums? "enjoy it just wait until they are teens" At 16 & 18? This is fantastic. They push back and that is the way it should be.
As more comes out I don't know if Mitch can keep stonewalling. There is a video of the terrorists screaming for the head of the Vice President. How does one ignore that? And as these people are arrested and talk to save themselves a broader picture will emerge.
A pathway to calculus is a civil right. If you don't want to go there that's fine. But making sure every person has the option not just the resourced is how we get more people we need in to STEM.
@gopsaidwhat
I am very very sorry. I lost a family member to suicide and this site helped, I don't know if it will be helpful for you but here it is: Again. I am so so sorry.
Years ago she said 43% failed Algebra I when offered in 8th in SF (all took it) when it was really FOUR percent. She also claimed SF was a success :
It was not:
Everyone should ask for the raw data this time. Fool me once and all.
"We have just completed a study of over 24,000 students taking different high school courses in 4 districts, the data showed that students taking data science:"
FACT: Boaler is notorious for buggy citations. Just see . You have a study? Post it. 18/
@guardian
"By all accounts, Big Barda is a slightly worse Wonder Woman created by someone who wasn’t very good at thinking up characters." You mean Jack Kirby???!!! 😮
@saladinahmed
writing girls as mean and jealous to each other, always fighting over boys (see old Archie comics with Veronica & Betty fighting over Archie and Superman's GF Lois Lane with Lois and Lana). Corollary: also as one dimensional only thinking about boys, makeup and clothes.
The SF lottery is not the problem. People will walk for miles and miles for their children's education. The problem is the district over the last decade has become anti achievement. If you say you want your child to learn you are accused of everything under the sun.
people asking why we need calculus?? Do you see that incredible image from the James Webb Telescope? That's why. And we need more
@SFUnified
students prepared to unfold that universe.
@SFUSD_Supe
@suleikhasnyder
I really *hate* the secret baby trope where the guy goes off scott free lives his life, becomes a gazillionaire. She struggles. Gives up her dreams. No life unt man cones back and rescues her. Tween child forgives all. 😝
The education reporter of SF telling me to just stop. And that is a big no. I come from a line of women who did not stop. My kids have theirs. I am here for every child who does not.
@SebastianMurdoc
That is what she is going to go with?? By the ball park? With all the associated commotion? Why did she call in the little girl for the water then and not the mom?
@TeaPainUSA
This is key!! I don't think we (society we) understood how much power they actually hold until this debacle. I also think we have to revisit this life time supreme court idea.
