I'm very very happy to share that our textbook is now posted online, expected to be released early August. This has been a labor of love that my wife and I have been working on for at least the past four years. We are very proud of what it has become

I'm grading calc exams and one student couldn't remember what a saddle point was called so they went with "that thing x^3 does" accompanied with a little drawing and ya know what, that 100% displayed understanding of the material more than remembering the name.

Well, that's it. I've taught my last class. My differential equations students applauded when I thanked them for the semester, which they really didn't have to do but brought a tear to my eye. I'm very excited for my new career but I am going to miss this.

@solidangles I like to sell it as "take a hard ODE problem and turn it into an "easy" algebraic one" As for origins, you're doing the inner product between f and e^-st in the function space. The dot product is an inner product so it's like talking about angle

@PeteButtigieg I spent most of my time in Afghanistan climbing through shipping containers or filling out packing slips for said shipping containers. I feel like less of a veteran every day because I never got shot at, and it shouldn't be that way. These arm chair generals can rot.

@delusionalcons To be fair, while the Pentagon budget is obscene, most of it is spent on projects lining donor pockets and the gear that gets to line units often times is under supplied, or is some fancy new contraption that is totally useless but costs more than your car.

@sunnysideadele @rudy_betrayed IPA is easy to brew because the large hop schedule can cover up a poorly crafted grain bill or mistakes in the mash temperature. Subtle effects occur when mashing too high or too low and depending on types of speciality grains. IPA you need two row malt and a bunch of hops

I just had a student (one of my best) on her final take the derivative of ln(5x^3-7x) *correctly* by first factoring, and rewriting the function as ln(x)+ln(5x^2-7) THEN doing the derivative which just, is correct, but I would never think to do it that way.
