RIP to Ray Fosse after a battle with cancer. Best known for his collision with Pete Rose in the 1970 All-Star Game. Helped Marion High School in southern Illinois reach the 1965 state basketball Elite Eight.
Congratulations to John Leusch

of the Daily Herald as part of the media for the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame Class of 2022! A well-deserved honor for their hoops coverage.
This week's March Madness-delayed Sunday Slam: Ryan Copeland had a great understanding of baseball when he was leading Elk Grove to the 2006 Elite Eight. Now he's leading one of the country's top D-II programs at the University of Illinois Springfield.
Three-sport athletes have become a rarity. A three-sport varsity head coach like Prospect's Brad Rathe (girls golf, boys basketball, boys tennis) is something I haven't seen at a big school. Find out more on how he does it in this week's Sunday Slam.
There is always a lot of debate about which tournament is best. But there is no debate no state matches the passion, excitement and interest of holiday high school hoops like Illinois.
Congrats to
@palatinebball
on the super finish from Tommy Elter to Connor May for the 55-53 winner with 1.4 left. So happy for Eric Millstone and crew. Will bring home boys hoops trophy No. 6 for the MSL.
What a year for basketball at Barrington - only the second school in Mid-Suburban League history to send girls and boys teams to the state finals in the same season! Fremd's boys and girls took fourth in 2017.
Congrats to
@TPWHawksFootba1
and
@12_MSL
on the first MSL division title since 1994. A kid named Tim Heyse from Conant was there the last time, showing the grit his current team has, playing on a badly sprained ankle to try and prevent it from happening.
Exciting day for
@DillonMaciaszek
. He is part of the ESPN broadcast crew for Tennessee-LSU at 11 am and gets to hold one of the parabolic on-field microphones. Geaux Tigers!
Sad to hear the news earlier today about the passing of John Radtke. A great colleague in prep sports at the Daily Herald and friend for more than 25 years. A legendary figure and huge champion for girls sports. RIP.
Just saw the
@ABC7Chicago
crawl has the Sox home opener this afternoon against the Detroit Lions. I actually like this matchup better since Dan Campbell will probably call for a triple steal with the bags loaded and no outs in the 8th with the Tigers down 2 runs.
July 2, 1927: Wesley "Red" Rush, the announcer who called the 1963 NCAA Championship, is born in Long Beach, California. He also earned 3 World Series rings as the play by play man for the Oakland A's in the 1970s.
Terribly tragic news on the passing of Jeff Dickerson. The consummate teammate as a 3-sport athlete at Buffalo Grove HS and in his media work on the Bears. Fortunate to do a column on him 7 years ago. Lost his wife 2 years ago to cancer. RIP and prayers for his son Parker.
The 49ers comeback by Jimmy Garoppolo (Rolling Meadows) gives the NFC three ex-Mid-Suburban League QBs in the playoffs. Garoppolo will see first-year Dallas assistant Scott Tolzien (Fremd) in the first round. Arizona outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen also from Fremd.
Congrats to
@Conant_Baseball
and coach Derek Fivelson - first Mid-Suburban League team to play for a state baseball title since Schaumburg won it all in 1997. Barrington also won a title in 1986 and took second in 87 and 88. Schaumburg finished second in 89.
Barrington’s Lukas Van Ness becomes first player from the Mid-Suburban League taken in 1st round of NFL draft. Previous best Meadows’ Jimmy Garoppolo in 2014 2nd round.
One of Best in Illinois when it comes to covering girls basketball is IBCA Hall of Famer John Leusch. He has been a champion for girls basketball since joining the Daily Herald newspaper in 1980.
Congrats to
@Conant_Baseball
on a phenomenal and historic season. Joined Barrington and Schaumburg on list of Mid-Suburban League baseball teams to play for a state title. A lot of great accomplishments and memorable moments.
St. Viator grad Trey Calvin’s jumper at 0:15 gives Wright State a 72-71 win and Horizon title and NCAA bid. Calvin scores 21 to lead second-half comeback from 16 down to Northern Kentucky

@MarkPancratz
holds the first and only Illinois state boys basketball title trophy from the Mid-Suburban League after Schaumburg tops No. 1 Thornwood and Eddy Curry 66-54. Great, fun group that epitomized teamwork, fearlessness and understanding roles.
Johnsburg’s Zach Toussaint hits game-winning 3 off loose ball at buzzer to give West Texas A&M an 87-86 win in D-II semis. They were his only points of the game.
Kudos to Kevin Harlan mentioning all the kids who got in at the end of Illinois-Drexel. Most would be working on shtick or trying to impress themselves. A true pro.
Just a friendly reminder with the winter weather situation throughout Illinois and its impact on HS events. If you are planning to reschedule it's postponed. If you aren't going to reschedule it's canceled. I believe
@mikeclarkpreps
deserves credit for sharing this originally.
Congrats to Brett Harris becoming the first
@hersey_baseball
grad to make the majors and started tonight for the A’s. Longtime reliever
@mikemyers36
went to Hersey for 2 years before graduating from Crystal Lake Central.
Junior year starts today for Dillon and it's the big first day of high school for Maggie and Ellie. Stay positive, embrace the challenges ahead and make the best of this unique situation.
And to paraphrase Elwood Blues: Our lady of blessed Internet connection don't fail us now!
Excited to start a fun new side venture "Mid Suburban Legends and Beyond" with stories from the HS sports scene. There's a feature on the final game for
@DofoIron
and remembering a huge playoff spoiler in
@WHSactivities
from 25 years ago.
Congrats to Hoffman Estates grad and Braves coach Sal Fasano (front and center on the 2020 sign) on getting to the World Series. One of 5 catchers from the Mid-Suburban League to play in the bigs and a class act all the way.
RIP to Arlington HS and Northern Illinois U great Fritz Peterson. A remarkable career where he won 20, was an all-star and a central figure in one of the most bizarre trades in sports history.
The easiest way to fix the major issue of a lack of sports officials - particularly at the youth and high school level - would be if all the officiating critics on here grabbed a whistle. The problem would be immediately solved!!!
Congratulations to the Barrington girls on their first trip to the state tournament! Great to see Babbi Barreiro, Joe Molloy and the rest of the group headed to Redbird Arena!
Squad 51, Squad 51. We've got an uncontrollable dumpster fire at 333 West 35th Street. North-south streets Wentworth and Shields. Multiple units are en route. 10-4.
Junior Zach Maness does it again for
@McHenryBBB
with a steal and acrobatic buzzer-beating layup for a 47-45 FVC win over Cary-Grove. Lots of fight and heart through adversity again by the Warriors!
@nwherald
@nwh_JoePrepZone
One of the great parts of covering high school sports for years was seeing kids you covered go into coaching and teaching. Great to see Matt's success as a head coach at Meadows and assistant at Wheeling and how much he did for kids after his days as an athlete at Hoffman Estates
Congrats to
@palatinebball
as the 9th team to win consecutive MSL boys bkb title games with Buffalo Grove (76-78), Arlington (82-83), Prospect (84-86), Meadows (89-91), Fremd (97-98), Schaumburg (99-01, 12-13) and Conant (07-08).
Class 3A Baseball State Tournament: Crystal Lake Central 3, Lemont 2, final. Tommy Korn with a four-pitch K for the state title. CLC wins its first baseball state title in school history and joins the girls soccer team that won the 2A state title a week ago.
It's been quite a road for Alex Palczewski from Prospect to sixth-year starter for the nationally ranked resurgent Illinois football program. Fun catching up with Prospect assistant
@TimBeishir
who has been there every step of the way.
Congratulations to Prospect's David Kendziera. Did not make the Olympic 400 meter hurdle finals but took third in his semifinal heat and ran 12th-best time overall at 48.67.
Great way for
@McHenryBBB
to punctuate a 58-51 comeback over Cary-Grove from deficits of 15 at half and 16 after three. Now 23-7 for first 20-win season (according to IHSA records) since 1976 Sweet 16 team was 25-5. Keep making some history!
Barrington coach Bryan Tucker's four assistants listed on the IHSA website are Mid-Suburban League graduates - Michael Sowa (Barrington), Nathan DeBerry (Hoffman Estates), Christian Spandiary (Schaumburg) and Fritz Wulfram (Rolling Meadows).
Bruce Bazsali just finished his 58th year coaching football, including stops at Elk Grove, Prospect, Rolling Meadows, Carmel, St. Ed's and Rockford Lutheran. On Sunday night he was honored by his hometown and inducted into the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame.
RIP both Bob Avellini and Greg Latta. Joe McConnell, in his first year of Bears play-by-play, was excellent. Also did the White Sox and vastly underrated.
