Class 4A Northwestern Medicine Field Baseball Supersectional: McHenry 2, York 1, final 11 inn. Unbelievable! Ricky Powell drills this 2-RBI double for the win.
If I could cover baseball games right now, I swear I would not complain about sitting under two blankets, wearing winter boots, gloves, two shirts and two layers of coats. I always whined and moaned about that before. I would not do it now.
Not something you see every day. Cary-Grove’s
@QuinnPriester
Priester signed baseballs for several minutes after the Trojans lost to Hampshire, 5-4, for the 4A McHenry Sectional championship. The boys know Priester likely will be drafted in the first round on Monday.
Class 6A state championship: Cary-Grove 37, East St. Louis 36, final. This was one of the greatest games you’ll ever see at any level of any sport. Just magnificent on both sides.
Class 6A state championship: Cary-Grove 37, East St. Louis 36, final. C-G's third state title in school history, definitely its toughest. An incredible game, it definitely lived up to the hype.
So sad to hear of the passing of Ron Traven, former Marengo teacher and coach. The guy knew and was loved by everybody. Your day was brightened every time you saw him. I will keep this on my desk always, and it always make me smile. My favorite Cub.
I'd like to thank Cary-Grove (2004, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2018), Prairie Ridge (2011, 2016, 2017), Richmond-Burton (2011) and Johnsburg (2016) for all these trips to the state football championships in the last 15 years. It never gets old. That's nine in the last 10 years.
Thanks, Jacobs High School for the recognition, the plaque and the kind words. I look forward to the next six months and a terrific ride through the rest of the 2023-24 high school year.
Thank you Joe Stevenson
@nwh_JoePrepZone
for your coverage and support of The Hinkle Holiday Classic for all 24 years of the tournament. We wish you well in retirement!
@NWHPreps
It is truly an honor to a small part of “Taps Across America” again this year. At 3 p.m. on Memorial Day, trumpeters and buglers (other instruments as well) are invited to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Class 3A Baseball State Semifinal: Prairie Ridge 4, Washington 3, final. Dylan Bremer walks it off with this single to score Ryan Gregorio with the winning run. PR plays for stste title tonightz
I knew I was watching something special in 2017 when
@BMilled15
threw against
@QuinnPriester
. No one knew how special until now. Both are first-round MLB Draft picks (Priester No. 19 to Pirates last year) and Miller (No. 29 to Dodgers just now). Highest area players ever drafted.
Retired Air Force bugler Jari Villanueva and CBS News “On the Road” correspondent Steve Hartman invited trumpeters everywhere to play “Taps” at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day. I hope this starts a tradition, whether we have the usual ceremonies or not. It is an honor to participate.
Class 6A state championship: Prairie Ridge 28, Nazareth 21, final. Drew Norton with interception at goal line seals the game on the final play. Two 6A state championships in a row for the Wolves.
FVC football:
@HuntleyFB
coach Mike Naymola gives a well-deserved game ball to
@samdelig
after the Red Raiders’ 27-19 win over CL South. Deligio rushed for his career-high 204 yards just a few days after his mother Terri died from brain cancer.
This is very cool. Crystal Lake Central coaches Brian Seaver and Bill Eschman gave me this baton at Wednesday’s Class 3A Huntley Boys T&F Sectional as a retirement gift. Many of the local coaches signed it. Feeling the love. ❤️
So CL South’s
@GardeckIan55
is on a rehab stint with the Rays’ rookie team in the GCL and C-G coach Ryan Passaglia told
@QuinnPriester
to get a pic.
Reppin’ the FVC.
Alden-Hebron's new gym floor looks amazing. These signatures of the 1952 state champs and coach Russ Ahearn on the center jump circle are some of the coolest things ever.
Class 4A Baseball State Tournament: Huntley 5, Lake Park 1, final. Second baseman Zach Model to first baseman Hunter Rumachik for the last out. Kyle Morgan 84 pitches, 2H, 5K, 2BB. An hour and 24 minutes.
I’d like to thank our area football teams for all the great moments through the years. Saturday’s Class 6A title with Prairie Ridge vs. E. St. Louis will be the 18th state championship I’ve covered at the Northwest Herald. Just like for the players and coaches, it never gets old.
Class 3A Baseball State Tournament: Crystal Lake Central 3, Lemont 2, final. Tommy Korn with a four-pitch K for the state title. CLC wins its first baseball state title in school history and joins the girls soccer team that won the 2A state title a week ago.
I’m going to miss Huntley’s
@alexx_johnson_
and Prairie Ridge’s
@rylee_lydon
in girls track and field. They are the greatest in their sport (along with Woodstock’s Kayla Beattie) we’ve seen in this area. Nine state medals each. Thanks for the awesome material to write about.
Retired U.S. Air Force bugler Jari Villanueva started “Taps Across America” two years ago, inviting trumpeters and buglers to play and post their videos on social media. I am so honored to be a small part of this every Memorial Day from here on.
I'd like to take a moment to thank
@CGTrojanFB
and
@PrairieRidgeFB
for taking such good care of us since 2009. C-G playing in its fifth title game since 2009 (champs in 2009, 2018); PR played in four (champs in 2011, 2016, 2017). We enjoy going along for the rides.
The Fox Valley Conference goes 4-0 in the second round with Cary-Grove, Crystal Lake Central and Prairie Ridge in 6A, and Jacobs in 7A. And CLC and Jacobs really getting it done with defense, winning tight games by allowing only one TD.
.
@RedRaiders_GTF
@alexx_johnson_
announces she will be attending Arizona State on a track scholarship. Her final three picks were ASU, Baylor and Tennessee.
Dundee-Crown honored “Charger Chuck” Feldmann, long-time PA man who died Sunday, with a moment of silence Friday. Fans wore T-shirts with his pic, there was Mountain Dew and roses at his spot and they had a recording with him announcing the starters. Well done
@goDCHSathletics
Class 3A Schaumburg Supersectional: Prairie Ridge 5, St. Francis 4, final. PR senior Parker Swanson slams the door with three Ks against SF’s 2-3-4 hitters in seventh.
There's a world of baseball knowledge right here with Prairie Ridge coach Glen Pecoraro and Huntley coach Andy Jakubowski, along with almost 1,000 combined wins.
Jacobs junior Joey Price (6-8, 315) has received a scholarship offer from Illinois after playing only one season of football. Golden Eagles coach Bill Mitz is excited, says there will be a lot more.
I get to be a part of the IHSA Playoff Pairings Show again, going on here at about 9 on NBC Sports Chicago. I’d like to thank Cary-Grove and Prairie Ridge for their high level of play that may be why they keep inviting me back. I promise I will keep it classy.
Prairie Ridge ends its celebration of assistant football coach John Mason's life with the team leading the fight song and with "Sweet Caroline," which is always on the PR postgame play list.
This is the scene at the James R. Thompson Center for the “Let Us Play Rally.” Fans and players are here to urge Gov. Pritzker to let the IHSA open up the fall season for football, boys soccer and volleyball.
Cool moment after Joliet Catholic beat
@RBHS_Football
today, 35-18. JCA RB Jordan Anderson comes over as I’m talking to
@BrockWood_34
and shakes his hand. Wood says, “Go win state.”
MVC Tournament championship: Loyola 65, Illinois St. 49, final. The Ramblers (28-6) are in the NCAA Tourney fornthe first time since 1985. Freshman Cam Krutwig (Jacobs) gets 11 pts, 9 rebounds.
Great to see
@mchenrybaseball
coach Brian Rockweiler and pitching coach Zach Badgley in Omaha ready to watch former Warrior Bobby Miller pitch for Louisville in CWS. Miller starts against Auburn in an elimination game.
Due to a family wedding this weekend, my basketball season is over. Thanks to Marengo and Woodstock North for a terrific final game. I'm so thankful all the boys and girls teams that you could at least have a season. When someone asks how I'm doing, I tell them, "I'm great now!"
I was honored to play “Taps” at the MCYSA Summer Championships’ Armed Forces Night Sunday. Thank you, John Streit, for inviting me to be a part of it. And many thanks to all who served.
