Understandably parents see academy football as the pinnacle, but as a gk , sometimes it's not the best route, usually only get half a game per week , and adding pressure to an already high pressure position sometimes doesn't aid progress for young gks 🥅🥅

Soo proud of this boy , joined a team halfway through the season, having lost 95% of its senior players , knowing he'd be under constant pressure as playing in a inexperienced squad,, has learned so much , and got a lot of recognition from people that know the game ⚽️⚽️🥅🥅

A big thing to emphasise with gks , especially younger ones, Is ,, the defence should defend too ,,,, be honest about mistakes, acknowledge them own then, but don't take on 100% responsibility if the defence have let someone through unchallenged 🥅⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️

Alfie played yesterday, conceded 5 goals ,, on paper a poor performance.

Get a lot of questions about keeping young gks positive, in a position that is very testing mentally.
1. Let them process the game before you talk
2. Remind them gks are seen to be fully developed mid 20s , they are still learning
3. Mistakes are opportunities to learn 👌👌

The main problem with academy football ,in my experience is the high turnover of coaches ,, in 2 years my son had 4 different gk coaches , 2 lead phase coaches and 3 head of academy. If they change at a critical time , it can be bad news for your child

Having been let go from an academy recently, my son has chosen to concentrate on A levels for 2 years, rather than re enter the system,, a decision I feel will benifit him long-term,,, the system was taking the love of the game away from him 💔

Why would a young gk go into a team that's recently lost 90% of its senior players, and now has an average age of 18 , playing against other teams of senior players at a good level,, to put himself under pressure, and develope his game .

The best attitude to go into the academy system with is ,,, I'm going to develope and learn as much as I can whilst I'm here ,,, only a tiny % make it and get into respective 1st team ,, but that doesn't mean those that didn't failed,,, they've gained too , perspective is key

We all enter into the system knowing its likely it'll happen,,, but the way my son was treated running up to his release was close to neglect ,,, his lead phase coach left a few months before the decision, a new man came in , and he was litterally ignored

The main driving force that gets players to the level they aspire to ,, isn't skill fitness or luck ( yes definitely these are needed ) , but persistence is key , too many give up after having a few setbacks. 🙌🙌🙌

Don't get me wrong , in many ways it's a good experience,, great training sessions, and get to play against great players ,,, but the lack of gametime definitely hindered my sons development, he's now playing 2 games a week on average, and has got his mojo back 🥅🥅🥅🙌🙌🙌🙌

Definitely gks have it tough ,,, only half a game 90% of the time ,, but there's good and bad , and a lot of academy outcomes can be basically who stays injury free the longest and which players the coaches gell with

100% ,,,, gks are a breed apart , and many coaches don't know how to treat them, destroying confidence without even knowing it ,when gks are young ( under 16) they need specialist coaching and protection from coaches who are clueless ⚽️🥅🎖🏆🏅

100 % agree ,,, before my son entered the academy system at 12 ,he played for 2 teams ,,, one was very good , in which he developed his distribution and communication, the other not so good ,,in which shot stopping was key ,,,, 🥅🥅🥅🥅🥅🙌

Controversial one ,, but I get a lot of questions about how injuries with academy players ,,, injuries will happen, due to age of kids and amount of training,, its a lottery , don't stress, and don't avoid the physios, some do , it's not worth it 👏

My sons academy experience was far from ideal , went from having England and prem league interest at 15, to being judged, not good enough for a league 1 club . Gks can suffer in the system , definitely. But mentally and physically. It's toughened him up. ⚽️⚽️⚽️
