I hope today’s Nobel Prize announcement inspires people. I definitely am. Someone’s inability to see your vision doesn’t diminish its significance!!! Onward and upward!
Hi
#BINW22
fam. I’m currently finishing my second year as a postdoc in
@DarleenSandoval
lab. I’m assessing gut-brain communications through the lens of bariatric surgery with the hopes of developing my own program that focuses on a gut-brain-pancreas axis

This week I got to interact with some of the brightest scientists in the land. I met a fellow South Carolinian who knew my undergrad institute

On this day 2 years ago, I left my grad lab in Bham to move to Denver, CO (apparently there’s also a Denver, NC that has a zaxbys 😭😭😭) to complete my postdoctoral training. It’s been 2 whole years!!!!

My “lil boo” flew into DEN just so we could hangout before she traveled to Vail for the Kern Lipid Conference!!! Sometimes we get reminders here and there that reaffirm that we’re walking in our purpose. Alexa was mine today
So many think pieces centered around the funding, publication, and tenure processes in light of the recent nobel prize winners. The irony is a lot of you are editors, sit on tenure and promotion committees, and NIH review study sections and make the same decisions. 🙄🙄🙄
This is a swiss rolled mouse intestine also short for bane of my existence! Only took me 27 times (not counting those of my labmates) but look mama I made it! Newfound respect for folk studying GI!
This is true. The whole Shelby crew at UAB attended my defense and going away party. They also kept me company in lab on the many nights that turned into mornings.
And we're out! 👏🏿 Marlin Lab's 1st annual Sabbatical week.
A week at the end of the summer where I kick everyone out of lab to rest &/or do something fun.
The goal: Recreation for Re-creation. Take a breather & reset before starting a new academic year 💆🏿🪁🧘🏿⛳️🏄🏿📚
Is there a resource that lists starting postdoc pay and benefits(retirement/parental leave) on an institutional basis for the US?

So excited this article from UAB Magazine is published! It was an honor to discuss my time as the first Black woman President of
@uab_gsg
in grad school and how 4 Black women have served as President in succession.

On the way to my favorite place —
@ABRCMS
!!! Words can’t express what this conference means to me. I’m ready to pay it forward this week! See you all in Phoenix!
@LMFendo

have been some of my biggest supporters and sponsors since my 2017

participation as a grad student.
Beyond excited to be among these talented and dedicated scientists! A huge TY to my lab members and mentors along the way. Time to do some science and create pipelines for the next generation of diverse scientists! Keep a look out for new programs coming out of
@salkinstitute
I never wanted to be an academic, and during my PhD I got a good look at faculty work culture, and what I saw didn't change my mind.
I rarely saw academics healthily use that "flexibility" aspect of their jobs, despite constantly citing it as a top benefit of their careers. 1/3
All Trainees and Early Career Faculty from a UIMS background interested in Endocrine Research (DM, Obesity, Bone, Thyroid Pituitary, Metabolism, Etc.) please reach out and apply!

When I say
@ABRCMS
owes me nothing— I truly mean this experience was priceless. This week in Phoenix has rejuvenated my soul, reminded me of my purpose, and fortified my community that’s needed to navigate this landscape! What a time we had and experience we shared.
I am elated and profoundly blessed to announce that I have accepted a tenure-track Assistant Professor position at UT Southwestern (

) in the Department of
@UTSWInternalMed
and
@UTSWNeurosci
while housed in the Center for Hypothalamic Research!!!
I was very honored today to receive this recognition for mentoring - members of my lab, PhD students whose thesis committees I sit on and my colleagues nominated me. To know that I have a positive impact as a mentor means so, so much, my ♥️ is full. 🤏🧵
I hear House Republicans out on TV saying they would never vote to cut veterans’ benefits.
In case there’s any confusion, I made a little chart that could help them out.

It's really hard to give yourself more grace during *life* when many of these academic applications and mechanisms impose a strict & unforgiving post-PhD eligibility/time window 😬
@UABNews
done a good thing! This my boo y’all! She’s going back “home”! I latched on to Lillian when she was my student leader during my grad school recruitment weekend at UAB back in 2014. We’ve been thick as thieves ever since (I’m talking maid of honor for my wedding)!
After an exhausting 😅 8 months on the job market, I am ecstatic to announce that I will be returning to

What’s kind of hilarious is that I was told that I have the gravitas of a PI and that many folks already thought I had an independent position.

declared that it has to happen before Fall 2024 - so who wants to hire me? 😅😂

It all came down to mentorship!!! My grad mentor is a unicorn. We were still unpacking boxes when I joined. Thing is he cared about everyone in the lab aside from the science. That made all of the difference.
Very excited to announce that Eric Stokes
@egstokes7
has been selected as a 2022 HHMI/Gilliam Fellow! I look forward to continue building a strong mentor-mentee relationship and to help him achieve his personal and career goals.
