Hey West Virginians! Want to see a doctor in the legislature who cares deeply about the health of *all* WVians? Please take a closer look at
@sydneemcelroy
! She’s seeking to unseat Del. Rohrbach, whose profound disregard for people who can become pregnant is on full display today
I've met a lot of amazing people the last few weeks and months working together for harm reduction in WV. But I want to give a quick shoutout to
@sydneemcelroy
. I didn't even know her 2 weeks ago. She asked, "How can I help?" And then she stepped up in every way possible.
Another day, another bar application, another tedious paragraph disclosing that I was written up in 1997 at Chuck E. Cheese for participating in a food fight in the kitchen
@MollyOShah
What I fucking hate the most is when I acquiesce and smile because I'm too tired to get in an argument about it. I loathe myself for hours.
@HenpeckedHal
I live in a small town and can access the TouchTunes to most bars from my apartment. I frequently play “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Mis (Anne Hathaway movie version) on repeat when I know which bar my best friend is at.
I suspect the I’m Not A Cat attorney is relatively mortified but I hope he can appreciate the gift he gave us all. I only wish more Twitter main characters made it to the top of the stack for silly, fun things.
Good luck to everyone taking the bar exam tomorrow. I’m sorry you are forced to do so under these circumstances. May you bring some much-needed empathy and humanity to the profession.
For the first time in my adult life, I’m unemployed with no plan for what’s next. It’s a bit scary!
So here I am—just a public interest attorney with 10 years of experience standing in front of Twitter, asking y’all to help me find a job doing what I love. 🧵
Hi friends! Big life update here: I've relocated to Washington, D.C., where I recently started work as Senior Counsel for American Oversight, a nonprofit focused on government transparency.
sorry, just waking up now my from my rage blackout after a sitting delegate suggested one of WV's pre-eminent public health experts wasn't qualified to testify about the costs of treating people with HIV and endocarditis because she "doesn't have an economics degree."
This is the home of Joseph Morrison, one of the Michigan men recently arrested for his plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
Can we acknowledge that maybe economic circumstances play a role in radicalizing people?
I came across this, by
@ConnieSchultz
, a bit ago. She writes about her working class roots and what it meant to her family to see her dreams realized. One passage in particular made me tear up.
I love tweets from newly-barred attorneys (especially legal aid lawyers and public defenders!) excited about their first day on the job. The work is stressful, you might get nauseous sometimes, but you have the opportunity to make a real impact. (And it does get easier!)
This is wild.
@ameliaknisely
covers poverty and health issues with empathy, intelligence, and a commitment to getting it right.
If your skin is so thin you can’t handle your work being analyzed by the press, might I suggest getting out of the “public service” game
West Virginia Public Broadcasting has parted ways with one of its reporters after alleged retaliation from WVPB operational management and pressure from the Department of Health and Human Services.
@MollyOShah
I worked in NYC for a couple of years post-undergrad and it happened daily and I always complied bc I was scared not to; I still feel gross.
In a first for me, someone loudly blew a raspberry during my public comments this morning after I said I was speaking on behalf of
@ACLU_WV
. I've truly made it.
My mom the other day said “maybe one day you’ll be a judge,” and after I laughed for about 90 seconds straight, I told her I appreciated the vote of confidence but that’s not a door that’s open to poverty law and civil rights attorneys.
Time for my requisite new job announcement! This is my first week as a staff attorney at the Human Rights Defense Center, a non-profit based in Lake Worth, Florida that advocates on behalf of incarcerated people across the country.
it turns out that getting into a nightly routine of slathering chemicals on your face before you go to sleep really does give you the tiniest feeling of control over your life
So here’s the thing. If it’s really a “do nothing” bill and the only effect your vote will have is the message it sends to West Virginians, why the hell would you vote yes unless you are ok with the message that it sends?
Good afternoon to everyone except
@cigna
, which has twice declined to cover my partner
@RobBricken
’s cornea transplant surgery. It was scheduled for Monday and is now off indefinitely.
I’m going to hold my applause on gov leadership statements re supporting journalists/government transparency until they’re done booting people from the senate galleries for recording legislative deliberations 🫠
For as long as I remember there’s been this feeling simmering just below the surface that no amount of meds or therapy could ever abate and I don’t think anyone will ever describe it better than
@eekshecried
. I think about this tweet all the time.
Would like to thank the Lecture Hall podcast for getting me through a long early a.m. drive this morning and also introducing me to this amazing tidbit:
A year from now, will West Virginia teachers be permitted under WV code to share with students the comments made today by
@DelegateHorn
and
@officialdaniwv
? History is being made.
I’m disgusted. Where are the legislators who purport to want equity for all? Maybe you won’t win the fight but saying nothing? What a message to send to West Virginians.
I pretty rarely boost campaigns for in-state candidates, bc I’d rather focus on the actions of those already in office holding power. Dr. McElroy has been working for years already to push for evidence-based policies that promote health, not for political points, but bc she cares
There’s no scenario in which I am going to create a tweet thread this long, so I’m reposting my FB status here and encouraging people to apply for the best job in the world: mine! (A link to the
@ACLU_WV
Legal Director position is in the next tweet)
In Kentucky, the governor is giving daily briefings to ensure the public is informed of measures being taken. He even had a doctor attend a briefing to provide advice on managing anxiety. We badly need this level of leadership in WV.
I sat in a room with sexual assault survivors who wept as they shared stories they should have not have had to share and relived traumas no one should have to relive to try to persuade the senator not to vote to confirm the man and he did it anyway, gonna be a hard pass on this
Joe Manchin, who voted for Kavanaugh and Gorsuch, told me this of their votes to overturn Roe: "I regret any time someone that you're confirming in any public position is not being direct or truthful." Said he believed their testimony on upholding precedent "to be the gospel"
I started law school in 2008 and have been practicing for almost a decade. As far as mental health and substance use supports go in this profession, I've seen few if any improvements during that time. It all amounts to little more than lip service.
A quick update: On Friday we received word from
@Cigna
that after "reconsideration review" the request to cover Rob's cornea transplant surgery has been approved. The surgery was this morning rescheduled to mid-June.
Good afternoon to everyone except
@cigna
, which has twice declined to cover my partner
@RobBricken
’s cornea transplant surgery. It was scheduled for Monday and is now off indefinitely.
BREAKING: Tennessee House Republicans vote to expel the first of three Democratic lawmakers after they participated in a gun control protest at the state Capitol following the Nashville school shooting.
hey
@WVMetroNews
, ever considered interviewing people that are, I don’t know…directly impacted? Maybe not just the people that are destroying people’s homes?
BREAKING: Manna Meal, a program that feeds a lot of unsheltered and elderly people in Charleston, has been shut down indefinitely due to pressure from the city.
This comes the same day the Charleston police responded to an incident there. Accounts vary on what happened.
I know that law school is paying six figures to learn how to talk about the law and procedure and theory in the abstract, but so many ppl are caught up in technical precision today that it feels like maybe you never knew that the law is a real thing that impacts real people.
Let's talk harm reduction in WV.
@claymarsh
, WV has been held up as a national example for its COVID response. If
@WVGovernor
signs SB 334 into law, it will give put public health decisions in the hands of local politicians. What is your stance on syringe distribution?
#veto334
When any level of government makes it more difficult for people to access public records, it mostly makes me wonder just what exactly it is that they want to protect behind those barriers…
Your gal’s back from Buckhannon with $50 worth of goodies from The Donut Shop, a weighted blanket, a snuggly cat, and all the time in the world to tweet about ARP funds and opportunities for local government to support the housing insecure.
Let’s call it a “Lock-in” not a “Lock-down””. Lockdown sounds so brutally American with macho SWAT teams shouting at people, but a Lock-in is much more Irish. It’s gentle, homely, evoking craic, chats, slow pints, & small ones. Crucially, it’s all a bit bold too!
#CoronaLockin
Hey Charleston friends! If you know people affected by the fire at the Regal who need assistance with paperwork to replace birth certificates, etc., I’m happy to help (for free, of course). I work full time but am generally available early mornings, evenings and wkds.
Hi everyone, your friendly reminder that Morgan McGarvey works for a firm that (1) handles residential foreclosures and (2) was as recently as 2019 associated with "zombie" debt collections and...
...Attica Scott does not.
“Conservative judges in the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which covers several states including Texas, and the 8th Circuit, which covers the Dakotas, have recently sided with state legislatures that have used expanded privilege claims to prevent public review.”
imagine being leadership at an institution that exists to speak truth to power and then being so sensitive to critique that you fire the people who are paid to be good at holding people accountable for...trying to hold you accountable?
Well. My last day at the
@wvgazettemail
was supposed to be in two weeks, but that’s been moved up to TODAY.
I was just fired and escorted out of the office for publicly criticizing the decision to platform Don Blankenship while lobbing softball questions at him.
CW: Extreme homophobia
“This is a disease of nature. Nature will take care of something that’s wrong.”
Several people have asked me why there is a strong a refusal to confront the HIV and Hep C outbreaks in Kanawha Co. My answer is a 33 year-old episode of Oprah. (1/6)
My mom just had her brain operated on for the fourth time in seven months. We hope it's the last one, at least for a good long while. It went well and we hope to get her back to our hometown (at an inpatient rehab facility for now) early next week. ❤️
got my wildly unhealthy holiday drink, four million podcast episodes, my rental car, and now i’m about to do the thing. see you soon (in seven hours), Paducah!
