BREAKING: I’ve confirmed that Timothy Loehmann, the man who shot and killed 12 year old Tamir Rice as a Cleveland Police officer in 2014, has been hired to work in West Virginia.
Sources say Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department, will confirm later.

BREAKING: Allegations of a "fentanyl-laced marijuana" overdose death are making the rounds in Morgantown, WV.
I just spoke with Dr. Lee Smith (Mon. County Health Officer) who told me the reporting on this incident is coming straight from the police. Here's why that's an issue.🧵
Over 200 students walked out of Morgantown High in WV today in protest of a recent decision by their county’s superintendent to ban Pride flags in classrooms. After walking out, they taped a flag to the school’s wall and held up their hands in the shape of a heart.
Friday night, a delegate with the WV Legislature repeatedly used homophobic slurs at me over the phone.
Today, when we spoke he said he'd been drinking, didn't remember the conversation, and was deeply sorry. But like I told him, I feel a sense of duty to share what happened. 🧵
After citizens in White Sulphur Springs learned their town hired Timothy Loehmann (the man who shot and killed 12 year old Tamir Rice) these signs appeared outside city hall.
Someone who saw them said they went up around 8pm but were removed by 9:30pm.
BREAKING: Timothy Loehmann, the officer who shot and killed Tamir Rice, has (again) resigned from a police department following public outcry.
Per
@WVVA
, White Sulphur Springs Mayor Kathy Glover issued the following statement on Loehmann.
On Feb. 9, Huntington High students will stage a walkout during homeroom. This is in response to an incident last week where multiple classes were forced to attend a “revival” that was held on school property during instruction time.
It's come to our attention that students at Huntington High School plan to walk out this week to protest their school’s unlawful decision to allow a Christian revival during school hours. ACLU-WV stands with these students, and we will monitor the situation closely.
Manchin was the only Dem. senator to serve as a member of the American Legislative Exchange Council (Alec), a conservative non-profit that focuses on reducing business regulations, weakening labor unions, loosening environmental conservation efforts and restricting voting rights.

While the WV House voted to pass an abortion ban (with 3-10 years in prison for providers and no exceptions for rape/incest) the chamber was filled with chants of “fuck you” from the crowd outside.
White supremacist group Patriot Front marching through the streets of Charleston, WV
“Be vigilant. They cover their faces for a reason. My bet is hardly anyone in this group is from WV. Most times, groups like this will bus people in to try to recruit new members.”
Three years ago in Charleston, WV officials alleged a syringe services program was responsible for an uptick in crime. The claims were unfounded but the program was forced to shut down. (1/5)
Four years before that, Loehmann was hired by Bellaire police in Ohio (just across the river from Wheeling, WV) police but withdrew his application to work there.
I asked Sen. Grady how she opposes safe space signs in schools but voted for a bill to put "In God We Trust" at the entrance of every school in WV.
She said it's not the same because, "[In God We Trust] does start the beginning of our Constitution."
No. It doesn't.
To anyone who missed it, Sen. Smith (R - Tucker) said he's drafting a eugenics bill for the upcoming session to prevent people who use drugs from having kids.
Dr. Smith said the Mon. County Sheriff's Dept. used a fentanyl test strip on marijuana found at the scene. But, past reporting has shown that police field testing crime scene weed for fentanyl can result in an incredibly high rate (98%) of false positives.
Police in WV rarely face consequences for misconduct. When they do, it’s often dealt with by letting them transfer departments.
I wanted to know what that looked like and this is the result: an interactive map of cops playing musical chairs across the state.
In West Virginia, police who are fired or allowed to resign "in lieu of termination" due to misconduct are allowed to switch departments.
Our latest story from
@WilliamKyleVass
uses public records to show where these officers go and what they've done.
And with news that a new federal law will allow the FCC to cap costs on calls from jails, the company with a monopoly on that market in WV (GTL) is seeing its stock tank.
You fucking love to see it.
Any death is a tragedy, especially in WV -- the hardest hit state by the overdose crisis. But people are dying because the government's war on drugs makes them turn to an licit drug supply. Misinformation is their greatest weapon. Test your drugs and always question the police.❤️
Being honest, I'm glad Nestor agreed to chat of the record today. FWIW, he seemed shocked he'd said those things and very remorseful.
My suggestion to him: Apologize (of course) but do something as a lawmaker or businessman to show you give a damn about LGBTQ+ people.
In his State of the State Address tonight,
@WVGovernor
said multiple times that with him charge, WV is "no longer competing with Mississippi" for dead last last in national rankings.
Gov. Jim Justice is right. Mississippi is doing better than West Virginia in several areas.🧵
In Connecticut last year, 39 of 40 samples of marijuana that initially tested positive for fentanyl were later confirmed to be false positives.
Dr. Smith said he's not sure if the Sheriff's Dept will be doing confirmatory testing in this incident.

As the father of an 11-year-old girl, you’re darn right I don’t want her sharing a locker room with biological males. Girl’s locker rooms are for girls. And they’ll stay that way when I’m Governor.

According to unsheltered people in
@huntingtoncity
, police officers have been running them off the day shelter’s property. So, I showed up at 5am today and it checks out. Filmed three officers kicking a 55 year-old woman (born and raised here) from under the shelter awning. (1/4)
Unless the Mon. County Sheriff's Dept. releases confirmatory testing from the state lab, this claim has to be met with a high degree of skepticism, especially when the state govt is relying on misinfo about weed/fentanyl to bring back the death penalty:
In the latest episode of governments using fentanyl to justify militarism, WV Senate President Craig Blair is proposing legislation to reinstate the death penalty for people caught selling fentanyl over a certain amount.
Had no idea Gordon Gee was on Massey's Board of Directors Safety and Environmental Committee for NINE of the ten years leading up to the Upper Big Branch disaster.
Good to know driving WVU into ruin is only the second most horrific stain on this guy's legacy.
In 2010, an explosion at Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch mine killed 29 miners. Gee was not only on the Board ... he was on the Safety Committee.
Massey was well-known to ignore and avoid spending on safety requirements under CEO Blakenship and Gee.
TERMINATED: As of today, Chief Nathan Lanham is no longer with the Monongah Police Department.
This information was shared by Mayor John "Johnboy" Palmer via a Facebook news group about an hour ago.
"You roll up that window and I swear to God I'll fucking shoot you."
Rivesville Police Chief Nathan Lanham (working here part-time for Monongah PD) can be seen here showing exactly how not to de-escalate a situation. Records show Lanham is currently employed at FIVE departments.
When cops get caught falsifying evidence or otherwise engaged in criminal behavior, they may end up on a prosecutors office’s Brady list. It’s a list of cops they won’t call to the stand.
Here’s that list for the Kanawha County Prosecuting attorneys office as of January 2021.
Mother of 13-year-old Laney Hudson, who was struck and killed by an off-duty Cabell County sheriff's deputy last week, said she was informed of her daughters death by a stranger, not a law enforcement officer. She confronted the sheriff Tuesday morning.
WV has had 49 years since Roe v. Wade came down to address its pre-Civil War abortion ban (with 3 to 10 years in jail for providers.) Instead, we get our Governor making a deal in a single day with forced-birth Christian nationalists to get a tax cut for the wealthy through.
YOOOO. Remember that sketchy "fentanyl exposure" incident in Oak Hill where a Black man was charged with attempted murder of two police officers for allegedly throwing fent in their faces?
Police tested negative for fentanyl aaaand the body cam footage just dropped.
Cabell Co. BOE meeting tomorrow at 4:30 is going to be wild. HEMS parents saying that kids were separated by gender at an assembly this week. Girls allegedly told if they wear things like “ripped jeans” they can’t be surprised when they’re “touched inappropriately.”
(Also, I'd like to preface this by saying reporters get excited when they find out something scandalous. This ain't it. Being slurred, even when you're not a member of that community, fucking hurts. This experience has left me feeling hurt and angry on behalf of LGBTQ+ people.)
When a local guy asked a white supremacist why he was protesting on the streets of Huntington today, the first reason to come out of his mouth was critical race theory.
Gardner, speaking against the ban, said, “If a man decides that I’m an object, and does unspeakable and tragic things to me, am I, a child, supposed to carry and birth another child? Am I to put my body through the physical trauma of pregnancy?“
Hours later, the House, by a thin margin, amended the abortion ban to include a rape/incest exception — but only up to 14 weeks of pregnancy AND if a police report is filed. When people Gardner’s age are sexually abused, it goes unreported 88% of the time.
HAPPENING: Day 2 of forced birth demonstrations/student protests at

MUPD told one student they can’t sit on the grass near the demonstration and are threatening them with a student conduct violation. Since then, other students have joined in solidarity.
Like coal mines deaths, opioids, and infrastructure collapse, West Virginia is now likely to be leading the nation in a new disturbing trend: the failure of the journalism industry as we know it to protect journalists.
What's going on? And can it be reinvented? 🧵
Protestors were using Mt. Dew and HOT-N-READY® to demand the government hear them as Senators voted behind closed doors. (This might be the most inspiringly Appalachian thing I’ve ever seen in my life.)
Upset that LGBTQ+ folks here have to live in fear of being called dehumanizing slurs, denied service, and access to basic healthcare. Upset that someone just doing their damn job could draw such vitriol.
BODYCAM: Edmond Exline died after being beaten by three WVSP officers in Martinsburg last year.
They’re named as John Does in the lawsuit, but I’ve confirmed it was Thomas Ellis, Bradley Mason, and Abraham Bean.
Ellis had Exline on the ground when the other two arrived.
Here at Marshall University where forced birth demonstrators have set up a rather large graphic display.
Protestors have shown up to show them they’re not welcome.

First up Wendy Fire, a teacher from Hurricane High. She holds up a sign that was removed. “I want to know how this is political?” Says she was told today she had to remove it from her classroom.
I had to hear this on the drive home, mere hours after covering a public hearing on a House bill that would give business owners the right to discriminate against LGBTQ+ folks. In the moment, I was gobsmacked. But when I woke up the next day, I felt deeply upset.
Books and Brews and Elk City Records, two businesses that have benefitted from the revitalization of Charleston's Elk City neighborhood, are lobbying alongside a slew of other businesses/residents to prevent a day shelter from opening that would serve unhoused people in the area.

Pretty sure telling a teacher they can’t have this sign is the actual “being political” going on here.
It’s that time of the year in WV where we get to watch a bunch of people who pretend to hate government expand it to limit health care in objectively one of the unhealthiest states in America.
Godspeed to anyone having anything to do with these people over the next two months.
There’s a reason people like Bernie, Ojeda, and Shrewsbury have done absolute gangbusters in WV compared to what establishment types (anyone with Manchin’s blessing) expect their turnout to be.
The reason? They actually give a shit and people can tell.

Something about setting up shop in a neighborhood as part of a revitalization effort and then complaining about efforts to address issues like homelessness in said neighborhood feels very gross – especially in a city that desperately lacks low-barrier shelters.
Given the public health crisis unfolding on Charleston’s West Side, the Mayor, County Commission, and the Governor should all be working together to declare a state of emergency.
