A much lower than expected tide today exposed an Anglo-Saxon fish trap, over 1,000 yrs old, to an extent I’ve never seen on the river here before. Most people pass by on the Embankment above & don’t know there’s such a rich example of Thames archaeology on the foreshore below.

Sorry, I know you’re all eating breakfast but yesterday I took this nit comb, preserved in my freezer, to the Museum of London’s FLO & he identified it as Roman. Made from boxwood, it’s survived 2,000 yrs in Thames mud & has Roman nits STILL visible #Mudlark

Tiny ray of hope re the felled Sycamore Gap tree. An arborist on the news has suggested that the remaining trunk of this 300 year old beauty is very healthy and that coppicing & careful management could result in eventual regeneration & new growth *crosses fingers & toes*

Yesterday while #mudlarking on the Thames Foreshore I found this tiny yellow glass bead with a sad & dark history. This is a ‘striped melon’, so called because of the colour & red/green stripes. Made in 18th C Venice or Bohemia & known as a slave trade bead.

From the Thames Foreshore in London this morning, a dream find. This, my dears, is a microlith. A small stone tool usually made from flint or chert & typically one to three cms long. These date from the Mesolithic to Neolithic periods, approx from 35,000 to 3,000 years old.

Thames garnets, a #mudlarking mystery as no one is sure what they were used for. Imported to Britain, the bigger pieces used in the Cheapside jewellery trade, the smaller ones probably industrially. Careless hands dropped sacks of these in the river. Merry Christmas, everyone🎄

Distracting myself cleaning this small, emerald green 3oz Victorian poison bottle, found washed up on the Thames Foreshore recently. Could have been thrown into the river as rubbish or fallen from a vessel, part of a ship’s doctor’s medicine cabinet.

Thousands spent on this brand new bi-fold kitchen door & deluxe cat flap yet still I have to let him out manually EVERY DAMN TIME.

@shushitssusan @SCrabbPembs Mr Crabb putting party over country and now crying crocodile tears. MPs who do this and bleat when the consequences hit are unspeakable.

He’s unravelling, isn’t he? In front of all our eyes he’s unravelling. This is our leader, everyone, during a national crisis. God help us all #liaisoncommittee

Just witnessed a woman being vile to a checkout girl because the supermarket had run out of something. Can’t be said enough but I am *so* grateful to all shop staff for their hard work endlessly filling shelves & being helpful. I know it’s stressful but no need to be so foul.

I try not to tweet all sweary but my day was made by hearing a vicar on the bus tell someone that Liam Fox could go & fuck himself. A VICAR.

Stopped off to put some flowers on my father’s grave & see two elderly ladies at the water tap. “You probably shouldn’t be out today, Moira. You might catch something.” “Hardly likely, Janet. In case you hadn’t noticed, everyone here’s already dead.”

- standing, chatting, reading (Kindle), eating etc. There are portaloos along the way, bins (regularly emptied), cafés, shops selling food along the route, all immensely grateful to be doing such good business once more after two years of pandemic & barely a tourist in London.

Good morning, am at St Pancras for the Eurostar. Just had my passport stamped with great élan & a roguish twinkling of the eye by a French border official resembling a young Jean-Louis Trintignant & I think I may have found the first and only Brexit benefit.

I know Parliamentary procedure is archaic but the notion that Ian Blackford has to be ordered to leave the house because he accused the PM of wilfully misleading the house and yet Johnson continues to wilfully mislead the house is, to put it bluntly, crackers.

Whenever I find a new glass trade bead, as happened yesterday, it’s always important to reflect on the dark past of what appears, on the surface, to be a pretty little yellow bead. It’s anything but.

@adwhiskey @mrjamesob @piersmorgan @EmporersNewC Brexit in a nutshell. Total lack of understanding of extremely complex issues, then distracting from this by deflecting & blaming someone or something else. Welcome to the world of populism.

St Val’s Day themed find from the Thames Foreshore, oh yes. Green glass heart, this once graced the top of a Victorian era eye-drops dispenser. Available from pharmacies but I found this one near a site where ships once berthed, so maybe part of a ship’s surgeon’s stores 💚

Bram Stoker’s house in Chelsea. Imagining him stepping out onto this gorgeous wisteria-clad balcony, looking for inspiration for his latest book and thinking ‘Yes! Blood sucking vampire it is!’

In other news, a locksmith who’s arrived to help a neighbour get into their house, has now locked himself out of his own van.
