Happy and also very surreal to see my master’s thesis published as a single-authored paper in the @EJPRjournal 🥂 In this paper, I explore the crucial link between polarization and citizens’ response to electoral victory and loss 🧵1/7

🚨 preprint alert 🚨 In this note with @turkenburgemma , we document a non-linear relationship between affective polarization (AP) and democratic support. These results can explain previous mixed findings and emphasize a potential silver lining of AP 👇

In the note, we argue: 🫱 On the one hand, a healthy amount of AP may strengthen democratic attitudes by raising the stakes and spurring democratic involvement 🫲 On the other hand, extreme AP may have an eroding effect by driving voters to view opponents as an existential threat

The relationship between AP and the erosion of democratic norms may thus not be as straightforward as is often assumed 🤔 This challenges the assumption of linearity in the study of the consequences of AP, and emphasizes the need for more flexible estimation strategies

Using data from the CNEP, we indeed show that citizens' democratic support is maximized when their level of AP are not very low nor very high: the relationship resembles an inverted U-curve

Democracies rely on losers’ consent. But events like the storming of the US Capitol and the Brazil National Congress raise concerns: Are losers still willing to voluntarily accept electoral defeat in our era of intense polarization? 2/7

Preschool (or ECEC) is regarded by many as an equalizer of educational opportunities. Yet, cross-national evidence shows mixed results: In some countries, students from low SES benefit most from preschool, but in others, already advantaged children gain the most 2/

We argue that privatization of the preschool-sector can impact its equalizing effects due to increased inequality in access to high-quality preschool, as well as through higher levels of socioeconomic segregation over preschool facilities 4/
