It’s not an unreasonable position. Before CCs existed, most people didn’t have access to credit. They relied on their social networks to borrow money. Borrowing money from banks required a good credit history and you usually had to offer collateral. For that reason, it was reserved for the wealthy. However, it wasn’t uncommon for individual stores to offer lines of credit to familiar customers. But that arrangement was reserved for customers who had a history of paying their bills at the store. The idea that everyone is given access to a line of credit from a bank is fairly new.
