An interesting change is that after 2016 there was a lot more willingness for people to show understanding to Trump voters who expressed regret over that vote. Basically nobody is interested in that this time.

@splitticket This also brings up something that @ECaliberSeven and I repeatedly bring up: it's actually possible for Democrats to do better with rural voters, but they have to actually try (and that doesn't just mean "look at this giant fund of money we've provisioned over the next 15 years).
