British people love to talk about saving Jews from the Nazis. Do you imagine they were flown in by benevolent aircrafts?
They came in the bowels of boats, on crowded trains, walked for miles across mountains. They were turned away at ports, put in prisons, called invaders.
Every term at school, the army came in to do a recruitment day.
Only when I got to university, I found out that they did not do the same thing in private schools.
That it was a certain type of person that fought in wars.
And a different type of person that declared them.
My grandfather came here on the Kindertransport from Berlin, before the War began. The Quakers paid for his train ticket. The family at Durham Cathedral gave him a home. It was ordinary people of British civil society that rescued Jews, often in spite of government wishes.
You have a choice. You can be like the people that helped the Jews escape Nazis, or you can be like the people who made them run.
Take the option that you will feel comfortable telling your grandchildren about. Know that you will one day answer before God.
Last year, police officers took selfies next to the murdered bodies of Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman.
Last month, police officers beat Mohamud Hassan to death in custody.
This week, a policeman abducted and murdered Sarah Everard.
This is systemic.
I think any instance of antisemitism is best treated as an opportunity for learning and growing. I'm not comfortable with the boycott, and I've noticed that very few of us are actually doing it.
So, instead, I'm going to instead do a thread, explaining what antisemitism is.
Last night, the government passed a bill that:
- Lets police ban protests
- Criminalises Gypsies and Travellers
- Allows police to watch people years after release from jail
This is authoritarianism.
We must resist it.
@benjaminbutter
@UEFA
They never actually say "LGBT" in their statement. They are making clear that they see the rainbow as a vague symbol of corporate 'inclusion' but nothing to do with the actual rights of our community. They support the symbol as long as it is meaningless.
A seismic shift is happening in the British Jewish community.
Reform Synagogue Youth insist they won't talk about Israeli independence without mentioning the Palestinian Nakba.
Noam- the conservative youth wing- is protesting their movement meeting the Israeli ambassador.
Back in July, Dawn Foster died.
Giles Coren publicly laughed about it and said she was in Hell.
He currently presents a TV show on the BBC and writes for The Times.
He never even apologised.
I can't get over it.
Let me be very clear.
Black people are not my enemy. Immigrants are not my enemy. Other minorities are not my enemy.
Jews are not your enemy.
Our enemy is the class that wants to keep us divided, fighting each other for scraps.
People often ask how they can criticise Israel without being accused of antisemitism. You can't. People will accuse you no matter what.
The real question is how you can criticise Israel without *being* antisemitic. Whether you care about that is a matter of your own integrity.
There is a conspiracy theory that the Jews want to spread homosexuality, advance communism and undermine the west.
This is ridiculous.
My desire to spread homosexuality, advance communism and undermine the west is barely connected to my being Jewish.
@JRichter1917
I suspect it is the inevitable result of making mourning mandatory and excessive. The media and politicians have had no sense of proportion, why would the public?
Last night, released hostages held a press conference begging Netanyahu to sign a ceasefire deal.
If you're not calling for a ceasefire, you don't want to "bring them home now." You want a war.
I don't understand how someone can be religious and *not* be a socialist.
You believe that the Creator made all people equal and diverse, on purpose, but you also think some should have less than others?
Under this law, anyone with a Jewish grandparent is eligible to have their citizenship revoked, on the grounds that they could claim Israeli citizenship.
But this law is not for us.
It is there to deport Black and Asian people.
Yesterday me and my boyfriend were walking through the holiday park.
This little kid saw us and said: "hey! You're holding your hands!" We said: "yeah."
He said: "wow, are you two... dads?"
Amid all the fear in current Jewish communal discourse, I think it is worth emphasising what a good place Britain is to be Jewish.
I have lived as a kippah-wearing, visible Jew in almost every part of London. I have never had a single problem.
There is so much joy in learning dead languages. You access an entirely different world.
But the government is not proposing children learn Babylonian Aramaic, Sanskrit, or Sumerian.
They want children to learn Latin out of nostalgia for empire and aristocracy.
Maimonides taught that it should be illegal for landlords to evict in the winter, and that city landlords should have to give 12 months' notice.
This is not my socialist fantasy, but the bare minimum standard for tenants' rights, according to Jewish law.
No to Covid evictions.
The Guardian is not a newspaper. It is a shock jock clickbait site.
They bemoan left antisemitism, and are one of the most common mainstream sources of antisemitic conspiracy theories.
They denounce anti-LGBT bigotry, but fill their pages with transphobia every week.
The Zionists in 1930s Germany were not the same people as those who govern Israel and occupy Palestine today.
They were desperate Jews, living under a genocidal regime, trying to find any escape route.
They did not make "deals" because they had no power and nothing to offer.
Do people realise how contentious Tzipi Holotevy is? It's not just that she opposes ethnic mixing and wants to massively expand Israel's occupation.
When she got appointed ambassador, centrists denounced her as a fascist. Mainstream Jews refused to meet her. Why defend her now?
Only five years ago such open opposition to the occupation was unthinkable in most mainstream Jewish institutions.
The new generation of Jews won't settle.
Becoming more Jewishly observant does not mean keeping stricter food laws or greater Shabbat restrictions.
It means becoming kinder, more giving, more committed to justice.

Hi Charlotte, in the spirit of listening, I think it is really important to emphasise that the problem is not the word "incursion" but the very fact of posing travellers as a problem at the same time as the government is trying to criminalise them.
wow, ok, unfollowing now. i was a big fan of his message of a single and universal god, but i was not aware that he had exiled one of his children and took the other one up a mountain to slaughter him
Today, I went to the unveiling of a Kindertransport memorial in Harwich.
One of the children is based on my grandfather, and has his words inscribed on his back.
I think of all the refugee children, like him, who are now drowning in the Med and denied asylum.
But it doesn't have to be this way. We don't have to be divided from each other while the rich get away with it.
Jews want the same things as everyone else: decent housing, safe communities, fairly paid jobs, a healthy society.
We can work for those things together.
When I was in my early 20s, I turned up to synagogue with my then boyfriend.
Another rebbetzin asked my grandmother when I came out.
"Came out?!" she said. "No, Lev was never in."
Antisemitism is different to many other prejudices. Whereas anti-Black racism is about keeping one group of people constantly lower, antisemitism is about having one group in the middle.
Since medieval times, Jews have been treated as a buffer caste for the rich.
Unfortunately, in the 21st Century, people still fall for this antisemitic trick. They blame Jews for the problems in society rather than looking at the structures that make their lives hard.
This is even worse in difficult times, like, say, economic downturns or pandemics.
At Jewish New Year, you are told to feel miserable and end up having fun.
At the secular New Year, you are told to have fun and end up feeling miserable.
The lesson is: aspire to misery.
I was a very gender dysphoric child. I liked dresses and makeup and boys.
At the school leavers' ceremony, when I was 16, the teachers awarded me "most likely to have a sex change."
I think I was the kind of child that JK Rowling thinks she is trying to help. But she isn't.
Before travelling at sea, Jews recite this prayer:
"May it be Your will, our God and the God of our ancestors, that You guide our footsteps toward peace, and make us reach our desired destination for life, gladness, and peace."
Today, I say it for those braving the Channel.
My family is expansive, queer, multi-generational, multi-household, and multi-ethnic.
That is what real families look like.
I do not want "family values."
I want a society that values families.
Underneath the personal attacks and vitriol that have dominated Twitter this week, there are important political differences between left and right approaches to combating antisemitism.
The British Jewish community would do well to have real dialogue about those differences.
In every country, when things get bad, the upper classes tell a story to blame Jews and push away blame from themselves.
In Russia, the Tsarists put out a fake set of minutes called 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion', which they claimed showed a Jewish plot for world control
Rabbi Akiva should be remembered for the revolutionary he was: a peasant who did not learn to read until he was 40, who transformed Jewish law in favour of the poor, murdered by the Empire after backing a revolt and refusing to give up his principles. Viva Akiva.
In Churchill's most famous speech about Jews, he pits the good, meek, national, 'loyal Jew' against the evil, terrorist, socialist, 'international Jew'. I am, and will remain, an international Jew.
Yes, this is indeed fascism.
Fascists don't turn up saying they're going to kill you. They turn up promising to restore your honour and identity.
They tell you that an enemy has taken them away from you. They don't begin by telling you what they want to do to that enemy.
Some of the earliest concentration camps were British. They were densely-packed centres in colonial South Africa, where thousands died of disease and malnutrition.
Those ones started as refugee camps too.
For all religious lesbian, gay, bi and trans people: you are perfect the way God made you.
You do not need to be converted.
You are already whole, loved and righteous.
This meant that, when things were good, Jews could appear as a privileged caste within Europe.
That way, when things went bad, the monarchy and aristocracy had someone to blame. They blamed the Jews.
The upper classes would agitate for anti-Jewish uprisings, or pogroms.
You're all excited to go clubbing on June 21st but I just can't wait to be in synagogue doing communal singing. You are not even ready for how hard I'm going to pray. I will eat more fig rolls than humanly possible. Lock up your grandmothers - they are going to be schmoozed.
Antisemitism came in waves. Jews would enjoy a period of relative privilege and security, followed by a period of anti-Jewish violence, followed by expulsion.
Before the Inquisition, Jews in Spain were safe and prosperous. Before the Nazis, Berlin was a Jewish haven.
I see people asking if they can have Yom Yerushalayim without the violence. Of course you can't. Yom Yerushalayim is the violence.
It is a celebration of military conquest and the defeat of Palestinians. Extremists reenact it every year by terrorising East Jerusalem.
In Hebrew, every letter is also a number. Aleph, the first letter, is 1, and tav, the last letter, is 400.
My name, Lev, is comprised of lamed, which is 30, and vet, which is 2, adding up to 32.
And that is also how old I am today.
Pogroms were a great way to direct righteous anger against Europe's outsider caste. Ordinary people attacked Jewish people and communities instead of the aristocracy.
Then the monarch would expel the Jews, cementing their popularity- and removing their debts with their lenders!
This is why medieval Jews were constantly mobile. They were pushed from place to place by the aristocracy, confined to distasteful jobs and used as a pressure valve to stop poor people from uprising.
People are asking why anyone is in the Labour Party if they hate it so much.
My friend, hating the Labour Party is the most important aspect of membership.
I didn't understand the big fuss was over conversion therapy. I thought it was an outdated practice that would soon be outlawed.
I didn't realise what a powerful lobby was behind it.
I didn't know Johnson and Starmer would pander to them.
I forgot how disposable we were.
In medieval Europe, Jews were effectively pets of the monarchs. We could not have land, access professions or attend universities.
We were confined to our own communities and mostly limited by the aristocracy to financial sectors - money lending and tax collection.
In order to keep antisemitism going, the aristocracy made up stories about Jews to make us seem really scary.
The most popular one was that Jews stole Christian children and drank their blood. That was the story about William of Norwich and Hugh of Lincoln.
(NB It's not true!)
@NatureTherapyC1
Hello! The source is Mishnah Rosh Hashanah 1:1. It goes back to Temple times, when trees needed to be taxed from the same date. It's evolved into a celebration of trees and ecology. Some give it mystical significance.
I find storms incredibly reassuring.
They are a reminder that no matter how much pressure builds, it will be released eventually.
The sun will shine. The rains will come. The cycle will continue.
Talmud teaches that workers have the right to walk out at any time if the conditions are not just for them.
May God strengthen the hand of the rail workers as they go on strike today.
Later, when Europe expanded from monarchies to Empires, they exported antisemitism out with them.
They exported their stories: the story of Jews stealing Christians for blood was literally promoted by the French Embassy in Damascus.
Powers spread antisemitic myths.
Trees are the real revolutionaries. Underground networks of mutual aid. Indifferent to borders, walls and fences. Always reaching for something higher than themselves.
This is now a trees stan account.
On Holocaust Memorial Day, let's renew the vow of the Partisans:
מיר וועלן דיי איבערלעבן
We will outlive them.
We will go on long after we have crushed the scourge of fascism.
Not only did the colonisers export antisemitic myths, they also exported the tools of divide and conquer that they had learnt at home.
So they turned Jews into an administrative caste in some of their colonies (similar, for example, to Indians in West Africa).
One of the most popular periods for antisemitism was the Crusades. When 'Christian' kings went out to battle for the Holy Land, they treated Jews as an internal fifth column - wreckers who wanted to stop their military plans. Many Jews were killed by Crusaders on their way.
I remember someone once asked me why Jews couldn't just "get over" the Holocaust. Millions murdered, many of them members of our immediate families.
And there are people who wish it hadn't stopped. For Jews, that's mostly neo-Nazis. For Gypsies, that apparently includes Netflix.
'No one ever wants to talk about the thousands of Gypsies killed by the Nazis, because no one wants to talk about the positives'
The sick racist
@jimmycarr
in his new Netflix special
This meant that Jews in the French colony of Tunisia were given some small privileges over the Muslims and other North Africans.
Then guess who got the blame when independent movements started to protest against France? The French Europeans were, of course, fine...
Reflecting back on the Jewish festivals in lockdown, Pesach was horrible. We had no time to prepare and it felt like eating a sad, lonely meal by Zoom.
Yom Kippur was lovely, because we planned ahead and made it work.
The government should have warned people about Christmas.
George Orwell's real name was Eric Blair.
If he hadn't used a pseudonym, we'd never have the word "Orwellian."
When politicians tried to change the meaning of words and institute authoritarian measures for war, we'd call them "Blairite."
I think there are some Jews who think that if we were counted as an ethnic minority, prejudice against us would be taken more seriously.
This comes from a completely delusional view that racism against black and brown people is taken seriously. It really is not.
For anyone who still does not believe that antisemitism begins at the top, as a strategy for deflecting blame.
Here is the heir to the crown of the British Empire, that carved up the borders of the Middle East, blaming the turmoil there on the Jews.
It's worth noting that the reason Labour is not abstaining on the Policing Bill is that grassroots activists, especially Sisters Uncut, got out, mobilised and issued demands.
If you want better policies from your politicians and parties, the answer has always been to campaign.
The Democrats are bombing the Middle East again.
Labour are opposing corporate tax increases again.
Everything is back to normal. The grown-ups are in charge once more.
Anne Frank was a German until the Nazis decided she was a Jew.
Moses was Egyptian until the slavers decided he was a Hebrew.
And in Priti Patel's Britain, we are all British until this government decides they don't want us.
So many of the people who are worried about JK Rowling being 'cancelled' for transphobia actively participated in pushing Wiley off Twitter and have expressed indifference to the BBC announcing it will censor Gary Lineker's pro-refugee stance.
Today is Holocaust Memorial Day. As always, I remember my great-grandparents, killed in Auschwitz.
And I remember all those who did whatever they could to resist genocide.
