Cluster munitions like those used in Laos nearly five decades ago are designed to do one thing: Kill now, or kill later. We condemn the use of these weapons and support the ICBL-CMC's call to halt the use of cluster munitions in Ukraine.

17,931 days, 589 months, and 49 years have passed since the last recorded bombing on Laos during the American Secret War. On Friday, April 29th, a farmer in Xaisomboun province, central Laos, was injured by Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) left behind from bombings almost 50 years ago.
We’ve made it to Laos! One experience that stands out from the rest so far, is our visit to COPE Visitor Center in Vientiane. We are in awe of all efforts made by the people of Laos who are helping UXO victims gain access to the care that they need.
🧵Today marks the exact 50th year since the last American bomb was dropped on Laos in Bolikhamxay Province. Our heart mourns for all the lives that perished during the war and the lives that continues to be claimed years after due to UXO accidents.
We will continue to advocate for the people of Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam to live on bomb-free land. In the wake of Kissinger's deadly legacy we are reminded that nothing must be prioritized over human rights - not power, not order, not pride. Illustration:

Sustainable Development Goal?
Recognizing that unexploded ordnance (UXO) is intertwined with the ability of Laos to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, Lao PDR created Goal 18 to make lives safe from UXO.
Nearly 50 years after the last bomb dropped in Laos, only 1% of the contaminated land is cleared of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) such as cluster munitions. We urge

Two kids were killed and three were injured in Laos from US bombs dropped decades ago. This is unacceptable and we mourn the loss of these precious lives. No child should have to live in fear from the dangers of bombs.

The US spent the equivalent of $13.7 million a day (in today's dollars) for nine years (1964 - 1963) bombing Laos, making it the most heavily bombed country per capita in history.
80 million unexploded bombs remain.
You can help end this legacy.
