The funny thing here is that I was trying to think of "Very Smart Brothas," which became part of The Root, so thanks to
@michaelharriot
and
@DamonYoungVSB
for the assist on this.
#TheChase
Everyone mad about the midday games can eat it. I would have lost my mind to go watch a professional basketball game in summer day camp. This is for all my latchkey kids who won't be subject to "women can't play sports" because they witnessed it firsthand.
Some silver lining on a dark day: tune in next Wednesday afternoon to find if I'm as much a smarty-pants as I make myself out to be on
@TheSkyhookPod
.
@Jeopardy
I won $10,000, which I really need. I won Jeopardy, which I'd always wanted to do. I applied to Northwestern for grad school, which I didn't even think was possible for me. And mom is finally eating more, which I'd hoped for since she first told me she was in hospital. 4/
Frank Thomas' thoughts on the Mercedes home run last night were perfect (echoed by
@Jomboy_
). Nothing is guaranteed for Yermin. He's going to arbitration after the season. Every stat he can add to his resume is a chance he has for stability. If you don't like it, kick rocks.
After the Angel City FC news, I'm challenging all my
#WNBA
media colleagues to watch one
@WFTDA
game within the next three months. Get some roller derby in ya life.
Finally going on the road to cover the
@chicagosky
! I'll be at Capital One Arena tomorrow night for the game against the Mystics.
Sky fans, let me know any questions you have!
I want to take a moment to thank
@James_M_Kay
and everyone who listens to
@skyhookin
. He could've asked a lot of people to come on with him and he asked me, rolled with when I was dealing with heavy depression. To him and to all of you, thanks.
I want to emphasize that my man
@James_M_Kay
drove to Minnesota to cover the Sky-Lynx game today. All his expenses came out of his own pocket. According to what I've seen,
@AnnieCostabile
was the only other Chicago media person there.
Respect him.

The Sky are in a wildly intriguing spot next year. Here's a few of the '25 unrestricted free agents:
-Aerial Powers
-Tina Charles
-DeWanna Bonner
-Tiffany Mitchell
-Kelsey Mitchell
-Alysha Clark
-Kia Nurse
-Stephanie Talbot
-Courtney Vandersloot(!)
-Sami Whitcomb
-Nneka Ogwumike
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert says that yesterday’s Chance the Rapper concert at WNBA Live was not open to the public because of fears due to gun violence. She mentioned that as a concern when planning fan festivities this weekend in general
My mom, who I thanked for always telling me "look it up, we have five encyclopedias," contracted cancer in August. I've been taking care of her since October, and she's been through chemo for the last two months. It's sucked. But she's pushed forth, so I have too. 2/
Sloot on BG: "It really didn't feel right without her. She's an All-Star and Olympian in this league, and it didn't feel right playing without her. We need people who make decisions to bring her home." (Q:
@AnnieCostabile
)
I'm going to be doing color commentary alongside
@DmicMedia
for tonight's
@gochicagounion
game versus Pittsburgh.
It's my first time on broadcast for a professional sports club.
One step closer to my lifelong goal.
(Secret likes would be appreciated.)
Wade was asked about Dan Hughes coming to the game. He broke down momentarily.
"Dan was the first person to tell me I was going to be a great head coach, and I thought he was crazy as shit. Me and my wife talked and she said, 'Maybe he sees something in you that you don't."
I got to do a lot this year, and I'm grateful for it. My mom's said this entire time that she's lived a long life and gotten to do a lot of things, and she's grateful for it. No third-place finish or cancer diagnosis changes that.
(By the way, she got Brandenburg Gate.) Fin/
SPOILER WARNING:
So Jeopardy is over for me, and I came in third place. As I walked off the stage, I said, "Now I hope I get into grad school."
I've tried to put the year into perspective the last few days, and I kept thinking it was a terrible year, based on the last months. 1/
Sloot on adjustment with Emma: "It's a different style of basketball. She's European and we play in Europe so it's just different. The coverages--they're switching a lot with us and they don't switch in Europe." (Q:
@James_M_Kay
)
I cannot invite everyone who will be at the June 2 Sky-Libs game out for birthday drinks after but
EVERYONE AT THE JUNE 2 SKY-LIBS IS INVITED OUT FOR BIRTHDAY DRINKS AFTER
Seven years ago, I took the Blue Line out to Rosemont to write a story on Elena Delle Donne possibly registering a 50-40-90 season, and I was so enraptured, I decided to come back and cover the team. It was a tough year, but it's always worthwhile. Thanks, everyone.
#Skytown
For context: Indiana didn't score for three minutes after that moment and had five points in the entire six and a half minute stretch. That's called a "momentum shift."
So yeah, I'd ask that question every time. No regrets.
To the CPD officer and security guards who tried multiple times to say I couldn't come on the floor after I repeatedly showed my WNBA media badge:
#skytown
I want to emphasize this:
@James_M_Kay
could've done
@TheSkyhookPod
by himself and made it just as far, but he reached out to me because he's a GROWN MAN in an industry where people rake your back to climb that ladder. He's been dealing with too much bullshit to be disrespected.
I'm going to be square with you all, this has been a tough season. My partner had people throwing dirt on his name, the league was tightening credentials at random, little support from outlets close by, and now to see the team just crumble like that after such magic last year...
It's been really cool doing this job. One-plus seasons, called two division championships, and both of them right on 35th and Michigan. Appreciate
@gochicagounion
and the Southside for this opportunity.
#gounion
#BackToBack
Jerry Reinsdorf is Michael Jordan and a beautiful season of baseball away from being bland Dan Snyder. He is the epitome of banal. He is maliciously mediocre. The South Side of Chicago deserves so much more than that.
Cambage with the answer and DeShields answers the answer and Plum hits one and James Harden is in shock and I am no longer a fan of the single elimination rounds.
#WNBAPlayoffs
@SarahKogod
She's a journalist first, unquestionably. But I'm not mad about her being called a Trump critic. I'd be proud of having that next to my name in bold type.
My
@Jeopardy
episode airs today! If you're planning to watch but not sure where, here's this link to find your local station (and how I found out Jeopardy airs on CBS in Peoria, not ABC.)
Candace Parker literally went 0-11 tonight and the Sky won by 12, and it speaks more to the Sparks than the Sky's versatility, which, in a weird way, still underscores how good the Sky are?
Syntax is difficult.
Come celebrate your Boxing Day, last day of Hanukkah, or just wash away some of your winter blues with me at Little Joe's! 1041 W. Taylor Street, and we're open until 2 am!
I was at Woodstock Pride Festival today and ran into some
@chicagosky
fans who can't really afford cable, but hate missing games.
@chicagosky
, please get that radio contract back. It would bring so many more fans onboard.
I had tried to get on Jeopardy, College Jeopardy, Sports Jeopardy, all dem tings since I got to Bradley, so it was surreal being there, for sure, but I did really want that dub. Ran up against it, but did the best I could.
Four years ago, I was traveling two hours on public transit from Allstate to South Shore to cover
@wnbachicagosky
games. Job was just as much worth it then as it is now.
Even though the result is probably different if
@e_willingham
is there, it was a fantastic first time on a pro broadcast
@DmicMedia
. Excited for the next show!
Missed my usual partner in crime on the
@gochicagounion
broadcast last night but the “rookie” did a great job!
@kwandarykitten
you were fun to work with last night!
Question for
@TheSkyhookPod
listeners (and
@chicagosky
fans in general): if we did a live Skyhook recording for ASW, would you come out and what neighborhood should it be in?
If you're in a conversation with a dude and they start a sentence with "Why do WNBA players dislike Ca--," ask them to hold on for a second.
Take a out a pencil and paper, and ask them to write down the last five WNBA MVPs.
If they can't do it, tell them to change the subject.
@ClassicJpow
asked Kah what it meant for Chance the Rapper to be here. Kah: "He was here for me?" Candace: "He wasn't wearing my jersey, he was wearing your jersey!"
Diamond: "I wanted to come in with my defense tonight. I wanted to give Kah a break. I didn't want her chasing around DT all night...so she could be aggressive with her offense."
Sometimes, there's an intricate series of screens and rotations that break down an opponent that can only be seen by the most trained eye.
Sometimes, you just go after the damn ball.
Here's how three timely offensive boards gave the Sky their first win of the season.
Sloot on championship expectations: "Everyone says they want to win a championship, but for superstitious reasons, I don't want to talk about winning a championship. If we do everything right, the championship will take care of itself." (Q: me!)
#skytown
Chelsea on postgame celebration: "It's been a hard couple of weeks for me, I lost somebody close to me. I've had basketball and I've had my team. This team...they're some dogs, man." (Q:
@alexaphilippou
)
I'm salty right now at the bad breaks they got, but:
-Kahleah's explosion onto the scene
-Cheyenne isn't going anywhere
-Gabby is finally comfortable
-RUTHY
There'll still be reliance on the unknown, but the Sky will be back contending next year.
I'm excited to be joining
@James_M_Kay
as co-host of "The Skyhook" Chicago Sky podcast! In our first ep of 2020, we talk CBA worries, Katie Lou's future and more!
