It's pretty crazy that something I did 16 years ago is still remembered by someone else. It's a prime example of why I tell people to create a unique portfolio site. I can't imagine where my career would be if I hadn't won an

Always fun seeing something I designed in the wild. This video shows how the interface is usable across various environments and light conditions with a uniquely shaped contrast filter.
It's crazy that I'm still doing exactly what I enjoyed doing when I was 11. In 1984 my parents bought me an

Before taking design advice I want to see that designer’s work. I don’t care where they’ve worked or how much they’ve made.
There’s too much content from people with no visible work.
Don’t take fitness tips from an out of shape trainer with a Junior High athletic background.

Still my favorite site of all time. It changed my life. Thank you
@ericjordan
for that website, the inspiration, friendship & giving me a chance when I sucked.
The discomfort and fear of doing the experiments, portfolio, hard work and hustle to push your skills and future self is a lot less painful than the frustration and lack of choices that results from a career spent overthinking everything and not doing anything unique.

When I'm designing I'm dreaming about coding. When I'm coding I'm dreaming about designing. At all times my mind is thinking about animations. My mind is constantly in motion.

Take some time today to plan & organize your week so that you have a few hours dedicated to personal creative time. 3hrs x 52w = 156h. 156 hours is more than enough time to learn a new skill or launch a personal project that just might change your career or your life.

I spend lots of time typing thoughtful responses to bad design twitter tweets. I usually delete before tweeting.
I've found that most people don't want unsolicited advice even if it would help. They also don't want to hear that solutions are often hard, complex or take time.
@elonmusk
It is not an actionable item and is only useful to the author. It should only be visible when you go into the tweet as metadata. Just like time and date.
"That artwork is rendered with Flash on top of the live video..if we change the design then it could take months to do because we'll need to find a Flash animator/developer and those are hard to find....." /me smiles and slowly raises hand....

I am 47.
Ageism is a thing and should be frowned upon just like other isms.
This is Twitter and everyone here has an opinion of an opinion of an opinion.
Everyone here needs a thick skin. (It's also very helpful in real life)
Sometimes it's more valuable to be the outsider designing something you know absolutely nothing about. It allows you to listen to the issues w/ an open mind clear of historical baggage. You can potentially solve the problem in new or unexpected ways. (It can also fail miserably)
It's a pretty good feeling when the client grabs their phone in the middle of the meeting and starts taking pictures of the designs you just presented.

Fun seeing my name mentioned among all of the inspirational people, brands and sites.
Putting the words “Here’s why 👇” into your tweet is a immediate ignore from me on any topic. It’s a sign that you probably tweet bad design advice more than you actually design or do work.
I dream of a world where designers mostly tweet work not words (myself included)

My DMs are also open for anyone who ever needs to talk. 25 years into my career I've likely got experience in something you're struggling with professionally and possibly personally.
Going back through some old design files from over 10 years ago. I am sad to say that I have found several places in which I did not name all of the folders and layers. I am disappointed with myself.

I've been having fun creating t-shirts for myself the past few months. Some people expressed interest in getting their own so I posted a few of them to buy. US/Canada only for now. Print on demand. All sales go to support my daughters' college funds.
Sometimes I want help on personal projects. But I don't really need help. But I kind of want help because I'm second guessing myself. Then I realize if I had help there would be more differences of opinion. So then I remind myself I don't need help. So confusing.
@DannPetty
Here’s how I look at my life.
I worked my ass off in my 20s and 30s so that I had the OPPORTUNITY to prioritize my family & myself in my 40s (Currently 49).
If you’re lucky you can also make the money you want, still do creative projects you love & work less hours.
A project I completed almost 2 years ago is finally going live in the next few days. Definitely the longest I've ever waited to launch something. Feels anti-climactic.
