Find good mentors and meet with them monthly. Find your cheerleaders. The peers and collaborators who help you find joy in the science again. Find your way passion. Maybe science. Maybe mentoring, teaching, outreach, consulting. But embrace it.

This is an important thought as labs re-open this month. We all experienced the shutdown differently, and must support each other as individuals with unique needs as we emerge.

It’s not easy, but…. Say no to reviewing that grant or paper. Decline that trip. Let a trainee make slower progress on that project than you might have. Find a sustainable pace, because if you don’t, you won’t choose to stay when other opportunities come knocking (they will!).

Be prepared for these three questions: 1. Why do you want to go to grad school? 2. Why now? 3. Why here? Practise your answers with your labmates, roommates, family, and the mirror!

The racist violence that killed George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor is not new in America. And what's captured on video represents only a fraction of the violence that Black Americans experience, some of it while in police custody.
