To the PIs, department chairs, and deans taking the long view that the academic research enterprise will survive the pandemic, please do not forget that individual trainees are impacted, stressed, and likely to walk different roads than the ones they envisioned just last year.
Eight out of ten postdoctoral researchers say that the global coronavirus pandemic has hampered their ability to conduct experiments or collect data, according to Nature’s first-ever survey of postdocs.

If you read any paper today, read this one. Educate yourself about how to be a better mentor and advocate. As a scientist, regardless of your country of origin, if you are working in the US, equity for Black scientists is an issue we are all obligated to address head-on.
52 of us Black science faculty came together to discuss Juneteenth and how we can use this holiday to reflect on the ongoing barriers Black scientists face and how we can come together as a biomedical enterprise to tackle these challenges.

Dear #postdocs: I only hire postdocs if I can afford to cover your stipend for the duration of the proposed training period. Fellowships are fantastic, but too many of you are ineligible - requiring them adds bias to an already biased system.
Dear #postdocs in the world, would you prefer a PI who told you.

Counterpoint: While the article is correct that the success of our academic careers too often reflects the time invested, how many fantastic scientists do we lose by requiring so much single-mindedness and sacrifice?.
A thoughtful article on the work balance issue in academia. "trainees need to take full responsibility for their careers and futures. Self-knowledge, self-awareness, and self-reliance are essential. And lab members shouldn’t shy away from asking tough questions of their mentors.".

I am so lucky and grateful for all the immigrant scientists I have had the opportunity to learn from and with, especially those from China. This legislation, and others that seek to limit immigration, are driven by racism and will further divide and weaken this country.
