I just submitted my first first-author paper!! 🥳 Somehow I didn’t anticipate how cathartic it would be to see years of my PhD work all wrapped up in a 1.7 MB PDF

Feeling really grateful to have a PI who has encouraged working remotely, offered financial support for social distancing measures, and reached out to offer support in any way she can. She’s twitterless but just wanted to let ya know my mentor is great.

Really excited to have visited my new lab for the first time today 🤩 Grateful it all came together during this pandemic & thrilled to be a postdoc in the Allen lab
@salkinstitute
!
My paper is out in
@SfNJournals
! We explored the behavioral importance of dopamine receptor D2 expression in serotonergic neurons (in M & F mice). Thank you to my co-authors Ben Rood, Lorna Wu,
@SenftRebecca
, Lisa Goodrich & my PI Susan Dymecki. Summary thread coming soon! 🧠
Fortunate to reunite with my advisor (the twitterless Susan Dymecki), my classmates, and the Harvard neuro community for our delayed hooding and graduation ceremony ♥️
This Arizonan survived 7.5 Boston winters! Thank you for everything HMS, the Ginty lab,
@PiN_Harvard
,
@HMSGenetics
, and the Dymecki Lab, I’ll miss you dearly. (High today: 18 degrees)
Survived

in San Diego! (Pro tip: Salk usually has an open house if you want to come see it for yourself)
(virtual) graduation day!
celebrating this accomplishment! but missing my classmates, lab mates, and advisor (the twitterless Susan Dymecki) today. thank you to the
@PiN_Harvard
community for the truly wonderful years!

Beyond excited to receive this award and join this community!!! Looking forward to meeting the other fellows and reconnecting with friends in the fall. Grateful for my mentor Nicola Allen’s support and those that shared app advice with me 🫶🏽
💯 Do not ask strangers/acquaintances ‘where are you from?’ or ‘what are you?’ when what you mean is akin to ‘I see you are not white, explain’. If this seems harmless to you, ask yourself why you need this information about another person? 🧵 (1/5)
This is one of my biggest pet peeves: “where are you from?” from a stranger. If you are that curious about heritage and origins, let that be one of your first questions to “white” Americans you meet as well.
In the parlance of Harvard, I got my box checked! Translation: permission to write thesis, I’m one step closer to PhD!
Also, I tracked down all of my committee members for signatures in the span of three hours which might be a record!
Congratulations to the 2024 Leading Edge Fellows!
34 exceptional postdocs doing biomedical research 🤩
Search committees, seminar committees, keep your eyes on these superstars.
We're excited for their presentations

Weekend vibe: Ignoring some silly man who thinks women with doctorates other than an MD can’t call themselves ‘Dr.’ for... *checks notes* the final push towards calling myself 🤞🏽‘Dr.’ this Wednesday!✨
Celebrating the submission of my K00 app! Developing these aims amidst a pandemic, that election, a PhD defense, paper revisions, & a cross country move was... hard. It felt like days would pass with no progress. Grateful for my mentors’ advice & happy with how it turned out!
✅ First Cold Spring Harbor Glia meeting completed! Such an amazing meeting and great talks. Also, really grateful for all the feedback and thoughts on my project.

On to the
@LeadingEdgeSymp
retreat!
Thrilled to attend my first
@ACNPorg
meeting this week! I’ll be presenting my PhD work (poster T91) on the sex-specific role for dopamine receptor D2 in serotonergic neuron modulation of behavior, come check it out! Thank you
@ahmari_lab
for your help with the invite!

Hey friends & colleagues - My thesis defense is tomorrow (Wed) at 2 PM (EST)! If you’d like to attend the virtual public seminar please DM for info, would be great to have you there! There will be serotonin, dopamine, behavior, sex differences & more.
Please share with neuro friends! The NIH D-SPAN Award (F99/K00) provides funding for the last 1-2 years of grad school and 4 years of postdoc. Have questions? Join the live chat tomorrow! As a past awardee, I’m happy to answer any questions I can!
Day 3 of the
@LeadingEdgeSymp
@HHMIJanelia
off to a great start! All the talks have been phenomenal and I am learning so much about fields outside neuroscience.
Less than 2 weeks out from my dissertation due date & I’m happy to report I have a 7 page word document named ‘Chunks’ that is just paragraphs of rambling thoughts I’ve extracted from my actual thesis
#ThesisThursday
We voted early yesterday!! 🇺🇸 The line was extremely long around noon but much shorter when we came back around 5 PM FYI. Open until 7 PM in Boston today!

What's your recent accomplishment?! Did you: Publish a paper?👏 Make coffee?👏Defend a dissertation?👏 Brush your teeth?👏Submit a grant?👏 Hang out with the kids?👏 Write one line on your manuscript?👏 Take a break?👏 All wins! 🥳😎🎉
Our program’s annual student retreat in Woods Hole was cancelled, of course. This past weekend, I treated myself to a little beach visit out there anyway!
Thank you
@BWFUND
for an amazing New Awardee meeting. Great sessions on creating inclusive, supportive, and diverse scientific communities. Onto

‘True allies should be willing to listen’. Being a URM doesn’t spontaneously make me a good ally, I’m here to listen and learn. Fellow academics, I hope you’ll spend part of your Monday reading through the
#BlackintheIvory
threads as well.
Professors, Graduate School Directors, Dept. Chairs, PIs, Postdocs and white graduate students.
Please take a few minutes to read stories from
#BlackintheIvory
We are telling our stories. True allies should be willing to listen.
A huge congratulations to my partner & colleague Eric on his successful PhD defense today! His advisor spoke of his ‘irrational optimism’ towards life and science, something I so admire ✨
Returning to lab today doubly re-energized after last week’s
@BRAINSbites
symposium on Bainbridge Island + a long weekend with college friends in central Oregon. Willing two faculty positions in the PNW into existence for my partner and I in a few years🤞🏽
View from the Carlsbad Half Marathon this morning! My move to SD last year was hard, I didn’t know anyone other than my partner & it wasn’t safe to take a dance/yoga class bc of COVID. Grateful to the Santa Mujeres Run Club for community and a safe way to exercise in a new city!

describes a new study from the lab of Susan Dymecki, examining how serotonin-producing neurons and dopamine interact in the brainstem to modulate mouse behaviors, and how this might differ in males versus females.
@harvardmed
Thank you to the retreat organizers, Kara, Cold Spring Harbor, and the Leading Edge community for a fantastic retreat! Congratulations to the almost 100 Leading Edge fellows who now have faculty positions! Learn more about Leading Edge here:

Endless gratitude to
@CSHL
for hosting us and to the superstar organizers: Ashlan Reid,
@TheresaLovele12
@FueyoRaquel
, and Janet Song. My heart is full!
What happens when you delete the only dopamine receptor expressed in serotonergic neurons in adult mice 🐁? Turns out, different things in males vs females! Come find out more at my poster now until noon! Poster # S13, come say hi!

Excellent news! I hope international students, colleagues, and friends can rest a little easier. This never should have been a policy and we must continue to fight against xenophobia.
HUGE NEWS-the govt has rescinded its ICE directive AKA
#studentban
Congrats to the advocates & thanks to the university who quickly took legal action to oppose this
All those resources mobilized across the country, all those students' lives clouded w/ anxiety & despair. Cruelty
Early in my PhD, I had tremendous guilt (mostly self-imposed) when not in lab. While university policies vary & are changing daily, PIs and supervisors please know that a quick message of support can be very meaningful to your trainees right now.
‘DEI changes and policies will never move beyond being performative within the neuroscience community or STEM at large if minoritized early career scientists are continually left to fix the systems of the oppressor. In addition to continuing to listen and learn, action is needed’
Loved every minute of the

meeting this morning! Looking forward to the Diversity Poster session tonight! (I’m not presenting but come see my ⭐️ lab mates

and
@minicontreras
!)

Well, my nerves over doing an important experiment today manifested as the ‘I can’t find a working printer to print my homework’ nightmare last night. 🖨 (Haven’t been in school that required printed assignments for 8 years!) Happy Monday!
Just recorded an audio summary of my poster for a virtual conference next month and WOW I do not think we were meant to hear our own voices played back to us.
Really special day giving a seminar at my alma mater
@lewisandclark
today! I loved connecting with the current students & catching up with my professors. I love Portland 💕🌹
Super excited about this! Check out manuscript from my amazing postdoc Eric Mulhall and collaborators measuring single molecule

Honestly, I miss getting groceries at the Brookline Trader Joe’s on a Friday night with my fellow haggard, fleece-wearing scientists and MDs. I did this once in San Diego and everyone was beautiful and buying only wine.
i am at a restaurant and there is a man showing a woman at the bar a full blown PowerPoint of his research on transmembrane proteins?????? this is TOO BOSTON
Congratulations to all the 2020
#GilliamFellows
! Welcome to the family! I’m so thankful for the opportunities, mentorship, & community this program has provided me.
#IamHHMI
HHMI is proud to announce the 2020
#GilliamFellows
! They’re bound by a shared passion for science and will join a growing and diverse community of graduate students and their advisers.
San Diego feels a bit cold! I wondered, am I becoming weak after living here for 1.5 years? The high/low for SfN in 2016 was 75/67, in 2018 it was 72/67.5 and this year it is forecast to be 67/49.5 so it is actually colder!
When I’m not in lab I like to go places that look like lab 😂 The Kimball Art Museum in Fort Worth, designed by Louis Kahn who also designed the Salk Institute.
We're thrilled to announce the 2022
#GilliamFellows
and their advisers! These 51 adviser-student pairs will join the larger Gilliam community committed to advancing science through diversity and inclusion. Come meet the Fellows! 👇
Just had a fantastic VIRTUAL Harvard Women in Neuroscience meeting. It’s sometimes hard to reach everyone in the Harvard Neuro Community so just wanted to share our website here, we’d love to see you at our October meeting!
Hey

How much time would you give yourself between moving to a new state & starting your post doc? I feel relaxed about the move but am curious about others‘ experience, anything you wish you did differently?
