Being a scientist is not all about science it has as much to do with your service to people: your trainees, the taxpayers that fund NIH, those that will outlive you and will tell your story long after your papers are forgotten: what will they say about you?

During my postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins I was once asked (by a prominent elderly gentleman scientist) if I was my postdoctoral advisor's secretary. I jokingly responded: "Indeed! I received my PhD and secretary training at Harvard Medical School."
This is what women scientists put up with every day: harassment (often sexual) and death threats. Institutions need to hold their employees accountable for engaging in this unacceptable behavior.
So proud of postdoc in the lab

I support the graduate students that are on strike today. They need better living wages! I tried to give my graduate student a raise and the administration always pushes back, claiming equity. Why is equity used to pay people less!

So excited to be speaking to UPenn Neuroscience graduate students today
@PennNGG
about our science and my journey to my current faculty position! Very honored to be chosen as their faculty speaker for the day!
Ridiculous!! I am in constant battle with the administration at Rutgers to give my grad students/postdocs 2-3k raises. They said it is “not fair to other postdocs whose PI do not want to (or do not have the money) give it to them”…Honestly !?!?!
Are you interested in the neurobiology of massage? Inaugural summer school to disseminate scientific and technical knowledge that will enable research in the neurobiology of soft tissue mechanotherapies. Applications now open:
Happy first day of Women’s History Month! Thank you Mami and Tata (RIP) for helping me get here today. You both did not get a chance to finish high school or go to college. I am here today because of you hard work and dedication to my education!! Thank you!

I obsess endlessly about the culture and environment of my lab. When I do, and as a consequence enact some common sense recommendations (time off to read, think, enjoy life outside of lab) I find that my lab members come up with the next best experiment ;) flip the script!
Been thinking about the meta of science. No one who runs the lab does not obsess endlessly about what is the best next experiment to do but what about the environment and culture of how we structure intellectual discourse in our lab? Lots of thoughts on this. To be continued...
I struggled A LOT during my first year as a graduate student at Harvard. I joined study groups! Actually, in one of my study groups I fell in love with a fellow classmate... who is now my husband! Thank you
@tischfield
for teaching me all about molecular genetics ;)
@KyndallNicholas
Hang in there, but don't go at it alone. Use resources. I struggled my first term at Penn as a grad student in cell biology. I turned towards study groups with peers, one-on-one meetings with TAs, and a senior grad student tutor assigned to the course.
By getting your PhD you are opening doors and opportunities for your family. Being a
#firstgen
comes with many mixed feelings. But keep moving forward. One step at a time.
As a PhD student, I was paid more than my parents combined. Leaving them behind made me feel guilty, but it also made me proud that I was able to help. These mixed feelings are something we
#firstgen
experience throughout our journey.
Hey! Are you at Rutgers university? Post docs get paid 53k while directors of failing centers at Rutgers get 300k. Times up! Post docs need to organize a walk out!!!
I am so proud of my graduate student (Nofar Engelhard). She is a scholarship winner at the 2021 meeting at the Neural Control of Movement meeting
@ncm_soc
she will be giving a talk Wednesday morning! So proud of you Nofar (also a mom of three boys under the age of 5!!)

So saddened about this incredible loss!!! I don’t even know how to process this right now. My heart is with his family. He was immensely loved and respected by many many colleagues.
Question: what is a competitive starting postdoc salary in biomedical research? NIH say 55k? Grad students looking for postdocs are telling me 60-70K? just want to get a range? Can you help me out? I want to make sure that my university remains competitive in their offers.
Are you a neuroscience graduate student looking for a postdoc? present your work at Rutgers! All paid trip! Rutgers postdocs are unionized: Competitive salaries, full benefits (same as faculty and staff!). Come to Rutgers where postdocs are actually treated like real people!!!
Are you a graduate student in neuroscience? apply for an all-expense paid trip to present your work at Rutgers! Applications are open until January 30th!
I am ashamed that this is happening in my own university. Please read this open letter from a postdoctoral fellow at Rutgers. Women in science, please read and sign! We demand better scientific role models and accountability from Rutgers leadership!!
Me too!!! When I interviewed I also took a picture of the “Harvard Medical School” sign! Just in case this was the last time. Yes to all those URMs out there: do not think that way!!!! We belong in academia. So proud of the next generation, you are doing it!
We are looking for computer scientist to help us develop computer vision and machine learning platforms to study the sense of touch, please apply through our website:
In honor of the 10th anniversary of the Immigrant Justice Clinic,
@RutgersLaw
in Camden held an inaugural naturalization ceremony. The Honorable Joseph H. Rodriguez, U.S. District Judge for New Jersey, led 27 new U.S. citizens in taking the Oath of Allegiance. Congratulations!
Great joint lab meeting this past Friday with the Abdus-Saboor lab!
@IshmailSaboor
Loved hearing all about Leah’s work on social touch!!
@leahthePhDya
Hope everybody has a great week!!
I advocate for this every day!!!! But Rutgers fights me Every time!!!! It is insane! I’ve reimburse people out of pocket! I’m getting tired of old academic structures that refuse to move with the times.
And pretty please, don’t come at me with "institutions don’t allow us to cover moving costs". I’ve heard the refrain over and over and over again (regardless of whether or not it’s 100% true in all contexts). Please just go advocate for change. 3/3
Proud moment as a scientist when your work makes it into a textbook (Neuroscience 6th ed. Purves et al). Thank you David Ginty for helping realize one of my biggest dreams as a professor!
Our U24 collaborative initiative, focusing on promoting the science behind force-based manipulations, is happy to highlight the groundbreaking work of one of our members: Check this out!
Starting a family is a personal choice. Everyone that wants to start a family should! Know that you will need help, so plan accordingly and don't be shy about asking for help either!
In about 10min (11:30am EST) listen to the BBC London broadcast: about the neuroscience of touch. Watch out for some quotes on the work that we are doing in the lab!
