I'm so honoured to be appointed as the first ever locum MP covering
@stellacreasy
's maternity leave. I can't wait to get stuck in working with Walthamstow on local issues and helping to pave the way for parental rights for all (including our lawmakers!)
Feeling all the feels today as I finish up as the UKs 1st Locum MP for the amazing
@stellacreasy
. It’s been a ride starting with elections & finishing with a global pandemic! Thank you Walthamstow for the support & here’s to a Parliament which allows women to be both mums & MPs🥂
I could not be more excited to announce that I'm joining the trustee board of
@PregnantScrewed
. A massive honour to join a fierce organisation, set up by a fierce woman fighting for an end to inequalities faced by mothers🔥
Absolutely over the moon to have been elected, alongside the wonderful
@JackTMPhipps
and
@GracieMaeW
. Thank you to everyone who supported and cheered us on the way. It’s an honour and a privilege and I promise to do my best 🌹
Yesterday, when he was out taking the baby for a walk, a well-meaning stranger asked my husband if he was ‘giving Mum a rest’.
So here’s a picture of me ‘resting’. Anyone else got a shot of what they get up to while their kind partner generously gives them ‘me-time’?

New Years resolutions to help a
@UKLabour
government get elected and to get more exercise off to a good start. Delivering leaflets to local William Morris residents this afternoon.
Having the standard ‘How’s it March, I haven’t done anything this year’ freak. Then I realised so far this year I’ve:
• Homeschooled a 5yo
• Held down a job
• Survived a global pandemic
• Been bigged up in Hansard
• Studied for my MSc
My imposters syndrome can do one today
A very personal thank you to NHS workers. Particularly those at Whipps Cross looking after me and my 4yo today. It’s not my first choice of Christmas location but every single member of staff has been kind, empathic and has put us first. Long live the

Women of England. Anytime you get imposters syndrome, think of this press conference. Could you have done a better job? Then crack on.
This is what a leadership system which privileges the mediocre white male looks like.
Maternity cover where you have to ‘escalate to the MP’ is not real maternity cover.
We trialled a system which worked for Walthamstow. How are we back here again?? Full solidarity with
@stellacreasy
in her fight for a Parliament which supports true representation. ✊🏽
Labour MP Stella Creasy's call for the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) to "follow the law on maternity cover" has been backed by senior figures and unions in a new open letter:
Here’s to the cleaners, the bin collectors, the health care assistants and the porters. Here’s to the carers, the teaching assistants, the cooks and the childminders. Here’s to the often unseen, unthanked workers without whom we cannot survive. Here’s to you.
Excited to announce I’m standing for election in my home ward. I’ll be focusing on reducing nappy change waiting times, increasing night time economy and introducing free milk for all 🌹
I’m not normally in to whataboutary, but knowing the behaviour tolerated in Parliament and then seeing this decision being made is absolutely infuriating. How about focusing on the sexual predators and bullies, and stop putting off women?
Parliament: you can’t have maternity cover for the role of MP
MP: right, so I’ll just keep working and bring my baby then….
Parliament: no, you can’t do that either
MP:…
Parliament: if you could just go away that would be ideal. This is all far too modern.

When you’re cuddling a baby and they turn their head so you feel their little cold cheek squish against your chest. That’s one of the best feelings in the world.

Big shout out to everyone working behind the scenes at

&
@RoyalMail
ensuring my 4yo can still access her medication while we’re shielding. ❤️
Today we’re volunteering with

vaccinations. If you’ve yet to have your jab come along and say hi 👋
The answer to systemic racism within maternal healthcare is NOT inducing BAME women earlier. I’m truly horrified that NICE think this is the answer to the question. My ethnicity should not factor in me beginning to labour naturally.
Just got my disabled 5yo’s first school report and couldn’t be prouder. She’s charasmatic, fun-loving & adventurous with a great sense of humour. Sure she’s also rubbish at PE and finds writing hard. But I know who I’d rather be around.

Just finished couch to 5k for the first time since having baby number 2. Felt impossible at times but I’m so glad I managed to get there. 5km today in 29.26. I hate running, and I hate how much it helps me stay sane. 🏃🏽♀️
Anyone else got a child who is enormously, overwhelmingly, starving-to-death hungry, right up to the point dinner is served. At which point they’re suddenly and mysteriously full? Please say yes, could do with the solidarity 😫
Day 5 in hospital described by my 4yo as ‘just like a holiday mummy. A really really bad one.’
Thanks to all the well wishers. We’re now at
@GreatOrmondSt
and🤞 heading home soon. Solidarity and love to all the other parents who spent Christmas in hospital. I see you. ❤️
An unsettled night spent dreaming of constituency surgeries and violence. I wonder how many others had the same.
Sending love to everyone involved in politics today and thinking of Sir David’s family and friends.
My 8mo helping meet with residents at my surgery this morning. Often residents bring their kids too and they all have a play while we chat. Let’s normalise politics.

‘The first African-American, first Asian-American and first woman Vice President. Because of this day little boys and girls all over the world will know that anything is possible.’ Yes, yes yes. I feel full for the fist time in a long time.
Welcome to 2024 folks. Where men on the news (a Lord no less) tell us we’re not allowed to have bums and boobs whilst also and having political opinions. Super. 👌
Me to husb: if you could go anywhere in the world for day right now where would you go?
Husb: honestly, I’d just send you out so I could have sometime to myself.
Just in case anyone was wondering how married lockdown is going.
My 5yo playing on her own in the garden on her 5th birthday in May 2020. She hadn’t been outside our house in 2 months as she’s clinically extremely vulnerable. No friends, no family. Just us. No complaints though, even she knew the rules.
Job sharing has genuinely changed my life. I've been able to continue my career and access roles which I would have otherwise been excluded from due to raising a family. If you're interested in job shares, how they work and how to get organisational buy in do join us!
The coverage of those crossing the channel, fleeing war and other horrors is poverty porn at its worst. You don't get to shout questions like 'do you feel safe right now?' to get ratings, to someone in literal grave danger, for entertainment. Be better than that. Be human.
"There are deeply entrenched gender stereotypes that mean women blame themselves when they get pregnant and get pushed out of their jobs. They think they’re the burden; they believe that narrative" Excellent piece from

Blackhorse Road tube is still open. I’ve just been down and spoken with the staff in the station office and they’ve said it’s v unlikely to close today. I’ll check in again later. They’ve said to keep an eye on

for official guidance.

Hiya Bushy. No need to worry! I’m sure you’re glad to know I’m working hard for the constituency in Walthamstow while
@stellacreasy
has some mat leave. If you need anything just get in touch 👍
Was a real pleasure to be in a Waltham Forest school today to talk about the Free School Meals programme funded by the Mayor. Massive thanks to everyone who made it possible, from the Mayor, to the amazing catering staff!
Today
@SadiqKhan
joined
@GracieMaeW
and
@kizzygardiner
at one of our brilliant schools to launch his free school meals programme.
We were delighted to be visited on the first day of the programme and we know how vital this scheme will be for children in our borough.
As one of the ‘damn blacks’ who grew up watching this racist bully on mainstream national TV spouting his offensive bile I’m very glad he’s finally been dropped. But it’s heartbreaking how long it took. He’s been racist as long as I’ve been alive.
Nearly 15 years in the charity sector and I think I’ve finally found my tribe. Thank you for all the sharing. I can’t wait for the next one.
#wocbossingit
So lovely to be back in Parliament last night with the wonderful
@FabianWomen
for the launch of the
#WeBelongHereToo
report. An honor to have been a mentee and part of the inspiring group of alumni.
I don’t often talk about it, but I was homeless for a while as a child and lived in temporary accommodation
The
@Shelter
stand is a stark reminder that the TA system is broken and nationally we must do more to to build homes. Everyone deserves a home.
I’ll tell you what. As a black, British, woman Twitter is particularly exhausting today. Could everyone just reign in the racism and misogyny for a quick minute?
Over the moon to join Waltham Forest Labour Cabinet with responsibility for 15 minute neighborhoods. I have loved my time in local government so far and can't wait to see what else we can do.
Last night at the Council AGM our Leader
@GracieMaeW
named her Cabinet who will work together for a Fairer Future for Waltham Forest.
She announced
@kizzygardiner
as the Cabinet Member for 15 Minute Neighbourhoods, and
@catdeakin
as Cabinet Commissioner for Health Equity.
This government hold us all in such low regard they can't even be bother to show up on time. Again. Turn up late for a job centre appointment and your benefits get taken away.
#TheJungleWestEnd
what a show. Hands down the most moving, entertaining and thoughtful piece of theatre I’ve ever seen. If you work for an
#NGO
you should go and see it for sure. And if you don’t, you should also go and see it. Thanks to
@GuiltFemPod
for telling us to go!
Walthamstow you beauty. Less than 48hrs later and 56 gifts have been delivered with a promise of more if they’re needed. What a honour it is to be part of such an amazing community.
Delighted to be at the Barts Health awards tonight. So many well deserving nominees but extra fingers crossed for Acorn Ward
@WhippsCrossHosp
who looked after me and Tilly so wonderfully at Christmas

‘The overall death figures in the UK have not been broken down by ethnicity’ - data matters. The first 10 Drs to die being BAME means it’s (past) time start looking at who is getting ill, who is dying and who is recovering and why.
So exciting to be the first and to see this being talked about in the chamber. Thanks to everyone supporting the campaign. We've still got a way to go but we're breaking down barriers along the way!
Calling for volunteers -
Lots of people in Walthamstow have been in touch asking how they can help others at this time. To help coordinate efforts, we’ve created a volunteering form where you can register as someone who is happy to help locally.
Off to visit a local food bank in action this morning. I’m so thankful to all the volunteers and donors who make it happen. However the need for their existence makes makes me really really really really really really really f*cking angry.

shares her thoughts on the appointment...
I've not left my house in weeks while I shield my disabled 5yo & work flat out (with my husb who is also working). My grandma was hospitalised & my mum was also v. sick. I have spent countless hours worrying about NHS being overwhelmed. We were all supposed to be in this together
It’s that time of year again!

early on Sunday morning.
Our Westminster clock mechanics will be busy changing the 2,000 clocks around Parliament to British Summer Time 🕰️
Two points on this:
First ‘the locum’ was me, feel free to use my name.
Second, come on
@ipsaUK
. I was literally in role while this was happening, being told it was all fine, that MPs were happy and there was no problem anymore. Fix up.
Sign up to support mothers to get in to politics.
If we want a politics which talks about childcare, maternal rights, parental leave etc. we need a seat at the table.

I went to see
@TheJungleLDN
last month and was so blown away that I’ve just booked to take my whole office. Such an important play for everyone to see, especially those who work in NGOs. Can’t wait to go again.
Getting so annoyed with misleading and just straight wrong maternity information.
Considering writing a book called ‘yes, but is there evidence for that?’
So proud of
@Joeli_Brearley
and everyone who made this happen. Takes guts to take the government to court, get a disappointing result and then continue to fight. Incredible result. 💪🤰🏽
We did it! We proved in a court of law that the Government discriminated against new mothers in the way the Self Employed Income Support Scheme (SEISS) was calculated.
Come along to hear me chat about being a black woman in predominantly white spaces, how we keep going and all the women who have inspired me. Friday at 7pm
Speaker announcement! We are thrilled to have

talking about her experience and what it means to be a Black women in Politics.

Looking forward to joining
@CentenaryAction
on November 17th to discuss hostility towards new parents in politics, the disproportionate impact this has on women and the path forward in making politics more accessible for mothers and parents across Britain.
THERE IS STILL NO FORMAL PROVISION FOR MPS TO HAVE COVER. IN 2021.
We always knew it could be done. And now, when they're doing it, is the time to make this right for all MPs. This needs systemic change for all and for the future of a representative Parliament.
The govt is finally recognising that Cabinet Ministers can also be women & they need maternity leave provisions.
Good to see this is changing but there is still NO maternity leave policy for MPs.
The inflexible working culture deters women from elected roles. This must change.
Yes!
@PregnantScrewed
want to appeal the judgement on the discrimination against women in the SEISS. They need to raise the cash to do this by 16th March. Can you help? You can say you’ve taken the gov to court in return for your donation!
We want to appeal the judgement on whether the
#seiss
scheme discriminates against women in the way it has been calculated. Will you help us raise the cash to do it?
As the mother of a 4yo who is in the severe risk category can I make a small request of everyone?
STAY INDOORS. INSIDE YOUR HOUSES. NOT OUTSIDE, INSIDE. UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO, DO NOT GO OUT. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
Thanks 😊
Officers are at the scene of a shooting on St James Street, E17. Two teenage males have been taken to hospital; we await an update on their injuries. Call 101 ref: 6831/29Dec with any information.
Would I like to have my family round for Christmas? Yes, for sure.*
Would I rather my clinically vulnerable 5yo was protected and we didn’t have to spend another Christmas at Great Ormond Street? Yes. Yes I would.
*in theory obvs.
