Yet another example tonight of why the whole premise of a closed Super League is bullshit. Villarreal are from a tiny town, and have beaten Manchester United, Juventus and Bayern in the last 12 months. Why would you willingly lose stories like that?
This is why I’m always saying state ownership should’ve been banned from the outset. How are football authorities supposed to clamp down on clubs if they are owned by nations? There’s always going to be a blurring of the disciplinary process if governments are involved.
The UK government has admitted that its embassy in Abu Dhabi & the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office have discussed the charges levelled at Man City by the PL, but are refusing to disclose because it could risk UK's relationship with UAE.

Just occurred to me that football’s so good for teaching kids stuff. Helps with geography, pronunciations in other languages, history (talked to the kids about the old Yugoslavia team the other day) and a whole host of other things. Half my general knowledge comes from football.
Liverpool played every game there was to play in every competition last season. They have played high-intensity football year after year, game after game. They were so close to a quadruple. Why can people not understand that a hangover was inevitable? No panic required.

Goretzka regularly raises money for charity and speaks about social issues that need to be addressed. His actions should be seen as a badge of honour, not used as a stick to beat him with.
Leon Goretzka, along with his PR management, was the main driving force behind the protest gesture of the national team at the World Cup. As a result, he had critics within the circle of the national team as well as within Bayern teammates [

He tackles until he drops, he’s disciplined, and he’s got great energy. You could get 2/3 good years.
This should be hailed as a brilliant

There's no doubt that
#mcfc
's legal action is outrageous and worthy of contempt, but the Premier League need to accept that they brought this on themselves. Allowing ADUG and the Saudi PIF to pretend they didn't represent state ownership was ridiculous, and now here we are.
If you have a women’s team, that funding should be ring-fenced. You shouldn’t start a women’s team and then just ditch it at the first sign of financial trouble. It’s not a luxury or a piece of PR - it should be a long-term commitment. Every club should understand this.

This is a very broad observation, and it doesn't apply to everyone, but a lot of the

This is painful. Terminology and language changes and evolves in loads of different spheres, and I don’t see why football should be any different. No-one’s claiming pressing is new, no-one’s claiming tactics are a modern invention, and this is straw-man nonsense at its worst.

To be fair, whatever you think about the merits of an All-Star game, I’d rather have an owner of one of the most powerful clubs in England talk about giving money to the football pyramid than talking about the Super League or Project Big Picture.
#cfc
The naïveté on show from Jordan Henderson in that Athletic interview is really quite breathtaking. The thing that caught my eye was the suggestion that treatment of workers in Qatar had been somehow blown out of proportion. The most basic research would’ve told you otherwise.
Gentle reminder that
#mufc
spending big in the market is not the Glazers being benevolent. It’s them using money the club generates already, despite debt they’ve loaded it with. They also hope to get Champions League revenue down the track. Supporters’ concerns still legitimate.
I’ve worked as a commentator for over 23 years, so I’d like to think I know a thing or two about judging co-comms. Emma Hayes is hands down one of the best I’ve ever heard, and Julia Simic is one of the best I work with. Gavin’s statement is IMO demonstrably incorrect.
As a pundit or co commentator you are giving expert analysis, insight & opinion.
This is different to presenting, commentating or reporting.
The pundit/co commentator should've played the game at that level, speed, power & aggression.
It's about authenticity & believability.
For all the criticism Bayern get for their domination of the

If you genuinely think Conor Gallagher deliberately ignored a mascot, you are a moron. It is absurd that this fake row caused

I was in Birmingham this week and drove past mural of Jude Bellingham & Trevor Francis. People laugh at

I was really excited about Edwards coming back to

Seeing a lot of this stuff at the moment. Seems to be some kind of PL-based idea that because there are only two English teams left, the competition has somehow declined or isn’t as interesting. I think tonight’s ties are tremendous - best night of the last 16 so far.

The whole concept of

needs to be rethought. Should be a generous spending cap across the board, with a salary cap to stop stockpiling. If you field academy products, you get extra cap room, which makes it worth developing and keeping your own players.
🔺 NEW: The Premier League is monitoring player transfers that could be used to exploit a loophole in its spending rules to ensure they do not breach regulations about clubs acting in good faith.

Interesting point that I hadn't considered until now: Hoffenheim boss Alfred Schreuder has worked with his players on developing signals to change tactics in-game, because in a largely empty stadium, all instructions will be heard loud and clear by the opposition.

I thought the opposite. Nice spread of teams, and although City favourites, a few teams that can really test them. Also, from a pan-European point of view, tremendous to only see two PL teams in there.
I paused for a moment in commentary here, because I was so impressed and amazed by what Bellingham had just done.

I’m a fan of Southgate, but comments about easing Jadon Sancho into a tournament aren’t rooted in reality. In the DFB Cup final (below) he wiped the floor with a quality Leipzig side. He’s scored a stunner at Barca in the UCL. He can deal with
#EURO2020
I can see

fans absolutely loving Mavropanos. A bit of a monster - super-aggressive, loves a tackle, will sometimes just charge forward from the back line and have a shot from range. There’s a delightful madness about him. Makes mistakes now and again, but a decent player.
I would suggest that the league with the most money and the biggest concentration of talent not having a team in the semi-finals of the
#UCL
is a positive thing for European football. English dominance isn’t a good thing, just as it wouldn’t be if it was Germany, Spain or Italy.
He’s right. It’s absurd to incentivise clubs to sell academy products, when it should be the other way around. There should be extra allowances and bonuses for clubs that field academy products.

We’ve been off-the-weekend for 5 years, and now we’re ready to try something else.
People who compare women’s football to men’s & sneer are missing a trick. Why wouldn’t you just enjoy it as football? No-one’s trying to cancel the Premier League, so what’s the problem? I defy anyone to see that winning Dutch goal and not feel a spark of excitement.

There comes a point where Vinicius Junior’s team-mates need to say “we’ve had enough” and walk off the pitch. If

I’m very curious to see what the actual criteria are for calling off Premier League games. Bayern had to give a debut to a 16-year-old last Friday (he was very good, as it turned out), but they got the game played. PL clubs have academy squads etc, so why are games off so often?
The whole England v Germany rivalry is a bit like Tottenham v West Ham. One has a real problem with the other and is absolutely desperate to beat them, but the other team has rivalries it feels more strongly, and is a bit bemused by the intensity of the whole thing.

Six years ago, Eintracht Frankfurt were fighting a relegation battle, and needed a playoff against Nürnberg to stay up. This one’s for Niko Kovac and Fredi Bobic, who transformed the club, Adi Hütter, who kept the level high, and the current set of players, who’ve been superb.

It will never cease to amaze me how people will read/hear the testimony of exhausted doctors who are telling them how dangerous the volume of

cases is, and will then discard that testimony after reading propaganda in a newspaper column or hearing nonsense on the radio.
Amidst all of the understandable talk about Sancho/Haaland, let’s not forget that 17-year-old Jude Bellingham has started and won a major cup final. Extraordinary performances for
#bvb

#bcfc
for their part in his development.
It’ll be a shame if the inevitable expansion of the World Cup means that we lose nights like this, where there is genuine tension, drama and consequence. I like the fact that it’s bloody hard to make sure you qualify for the World Cup from Europe.
Rangnick is a coaching genius, and
#mufc
will benefit from his vast experience. However, there will be some battles to win - how do you accommodate Ronaldo in a style that’s all about speed and intensity with and without the ball? If they’re smart, they’ll install RR as DoF.
I find it baffling that people think Jürgen Klopp would be a contender for the

fans. Unrealistic.
I know broadcasters aren’t supposed throw shade at other broadcasters (we all make mistakes), but there is so much wrong with that opening question. Disrespectful, and putting the interviewer at the heart of the story, which is the total opposite of what you are supposed to do.
Been told today there is no prospect of
#bvb

It's truly remarkable how good the broadcasters in cricket are. Obviously guys like Atherton and Hussain have been on the mic for ages, but it's amazing how many cricketers walk into the comm box and sound like they've been doing it forever. They make it seem easy (it isn't).
I’d keep Southgate if he wants to stay. Has removed the fear of playing for England, and has led with dignity and a light touch, creating an environment within which players can perform to a high standard. Who is out there that would do a more effective job?

Not convinced by the “what more could Frank Lampard have done?” argument at all. Yes,
