Oh no I fully agree she’s not saying that Sally Rooney The Artist has the “Sally Rooney syndrome” she lays out - I just also disagree with that characterization of her work. I think Rooney’s characters are made to reckon with their own narcissism and the harm they inflict

I think Rooney’s characters are often self-loathing and hyper-preoccupied with the harm they could inflict on others, like in conversations with friends or beautiful world. Like I don’t think any of them thinks they’re uniquely good - more like they believe they’re uniquely bad

I need everyone to know that this is NOT the Lacanian stance re: anti-racism! Lacanian theory is devoutly anti-racist because it’s about locating a universality in lack and forging solidarity through that understanding - read Fanon, not twitter threads
The people you target to scapegoat, to sacrifice, blame for every social wrong you perceive & bitterness you feel, become your truth & rule your mind. You become less yourself, & more their own distorted reflection. Superegoic “anti-racism” is a distorted reflection of racism

I’m a young woman and I tell students they can call me kelly because I believe it’s important that students view their instructors as humans rather than just as their functions in an educational institution - like it’s a pedagogical choice, not an attempt to be “cool”
I want to air a relatively minor personal gripe: middle-aged professor dudes who want to be ‘cool’ and ‘approachable’ and let their undergrads call them by their first name actually make it harder for those of us who aren’t automatically assumed to belong in the academy
