I was more supported by my English/theater teacher than my parents as a queer teen (shout out to Megan Curtis!).
School sucked, undeniably, but it was also a respite from my family, who sucked more.
Children aren’t the property of parents and teachers are vital confidants.
In 1996, I came out to a high school teacher, 4 years before I told my parents. That I could tell the teacher in confidence was totally appropriate, and I know such trust saves lives. It should be no different for trans kids today.
