Talk about solidarity! students from ALL UNIVERSITIES IN DC have created a Gaza solidarity encampment TOGETHER at GW! Georgetown, Howard, Gallaudet, UMD, George Mason, American, GW:
So hear me out: NO MORE RECOMMENDATION LETTERS FOR ANYTHING BUT JOBS.
No letters for: internships, study abroad programs, fellowships, grants, not even graduate school. This is too much already people. STOP THE MADNESS.
Welcome to spring 2023 where EVERY SINGLE ASSIGNMENT in all classes will be like "analyze this ChatGPT answer" rather than asking students to write anything
I am devastated by Lauren Berlant’s passing. Their brilliance changed the world. I wrote a review of The Hundreds last year titled Worldmaking In A Shitstorm which is actually what Lauren did for so many of us: creating worlds out of the disasters of the present. 1/2
Look at what arrived!! My book is now out! I'm kinda dazed in this picture, not sure this is actually real?
Beautiful blurbs by Lisa Duggan

for everything.
We are faculty at GW.
We observed the encampment.
It was peaceful.
No student should be suspended or expelled for participating in it.
🚨Draconian punishment for free expression goes against the entire ethos of a university education.🚨
I'm SO EXCITED to launch a new podcast with
@4Bassam
, Theory Buzz! Every month we interview some of the most exciting theory scholars on their work and the world. Our first 3 guests will be Wendy Brown, Mahmood Mamdani, and Achille Mbembe. Theory Buzz begins live on Feb 18 2pmET.
I'm delighted to announce that I'm the new Co-Editor for the journal Theory & Event. I'll be working alongside the fabulous current editor
@CBeltranNYU
! This is the first time that the journal will have two women as co-editors. Can't wait to read your submissions.
Reason why I have been so productive in publishing while you fools are languishing, my secrets:
1) Push yourself so hard, work so much, do other shit like that
2) Realize that there is another scholar with your exact same name and vaguely similar research... 1/2

Update: I'm so grateful that
@DukePress
will be publishing Lauren Berlant's last book, On The Inconvenience of Other People, in Fall 2022. It will knock your socks off. It's a gift from her to the world.
I had the incredible pleasure of reviewing the manuscript of Lauren’s next book for Duke U Press, On The Inconvenience Of Other People, and I desperately hope that book will be published. We all need to be inconvenienced by Lauren’s breathtaking brilliance, again and again. RIP.
“Hamas’s military wing is doing what it’s doing but that doesn’t make all Palestinians targets. It doesn’t justify perpetual unfreedom of Palestinians and their subjugation.”

Academic freedom means protecting scholarly analysis, no matter what. Everyone should support the academic freedom of my colleague and fellow theorist — and previous

editor — Jodi Dean. Jodi’s academic freedom is also yours.
“We support our students practicing civil disobedience. When ppl did this in the 60s [vs] segregation, the political institutions refused to end it & the sit-ins forced the issue. The students are crying out to end these injustices & their institutions’ complicity in them” —GWU
I AM FLOORED!! Ugly Freedoms won Honorable Mention for the John Hope Franklin Prize, awarded for the best book in American Studies. Thank you

So delighted to see my essay "The Exploitation of Freedom" in today's NYT Sunday Review. Something about holding a real paper makes all the difference for this Old Skool kid!

Faculty came to support students, but instead students supported faculty, offering a bounty of water, food, snacks, kindness 😭💕😭💕. Students are creating the world they want to live in as they protest the destruction of Gaza.

... then pretend all her books and articles are yours and hope no one notices your name is different by one letter. Now look: you’ve doubled your research output. Ur the BEST Elizabeth Anker
3) Lord your productivity over everyone on this godforsaken platform
4) Luv urself
Critics say the GW encampment is “scary” but it is so peaceful that the police refuse to intervene. STOP MAKING UP FAKE STORIES THAT IT’S DANGEROUS!! Students are building the world they want to live in as they protest genocide:
My politics and film class won “Best Fun Class at GW” - and yes I ABSOLUTELY posed with the Dune Popcorn Bucket 🍿
Thanks to the students who nominated the class and to

Today: Destruction, violence and hate overtake college campuses across the country with Jewish students feeling unsafe at their own schools. It is unacceptable, and harkening back to the 1930s in Europe. Our

the Duggar expose. It indicts every aspect of US culture: misogyny, patriarchy, politics, fundamentalism, abuse, education, corporate media, US empire…it’s a must watch.
Excited to share good news in dark times: My book, Ugly Freedoms, is under contract with

Armed Lockdown Protesters,

are all examples of Ugly Freedom: when people use "freedom" to justify violence, oppression, racism, and murder.
Just found my grandfather’s college diploma from CCNY in 1932. The first member of my family to go to college, back when you could be poor, an immigrant kid, and first gen, and go to school for free. Isn’t this why we had public education in the first place?
If the 21st-century is defined by anything, it must includes the west’s blithe destruction of thousands of years of Middle Eastern history and culture:

Buckle up, because this is essential reading. ⬇️ I don’t know who needs to hear this but we’re so fucked. Friendly reminder that this is not normal. 🚨🚨Let that sink in. That’s it, that’s the tweet. Betcha didn’t have that on your bingo card.

Officially BESOTTED! Meet sweet Percy. This little 11lb pup was abandoned by a mall and living in the grass of the parking lot 😢. But thanks to an incredible network of volunteers, he’s now a member of our family 🥰🐶🥰.
In Ugly Freedoms I called for a robust leftist freedom that finally severs freedom from free market brutality, white supremacy, and imperialism. Let’s hope the shift is beginning…?!
Been off twitter most of summer since it sucks my soul, but I'm back on because
#ChatGPT
sucks my soul even worse and I need advice before school starts. My whole pedagogy and syllabi have to shift to avoid its damage. Am I stuck with in-class essays? What else r profs doing?

The art on the book is made entirely of dust. Dust is comprised of skin, bomb fallout, animal poop, colonial detritus, infrastructure shedding, and more. Dust contains worlds! Thanks to the brilliant Lebanese artist Dalia Baassiri for allowing me to use her work.
I'm presenting at my very first MLA conference tomorrow. I'll be talking about my new book Ugly Freedom at 3:30pm Eastern, on a panel titled "Left Theory and Alt-Right". Hope to see some of you there!!
45 minutes ago: ok this chapter is ready to go
1 minute ago: yikes this (same) chapter is literally the biggest piece of shit I’ve ever written. I’m going to need to work on it for two years to even get it up to acceptability
Una mujer hizo su clase de aerobic sin darse cuenta de que estaban dando el golpe de Estado en Myanmar. Y pues puede verse como el convoy de militares llega al parlamento.
Loved the🎙conversation about my book Ugly Freedoms (

Two things that most upset me about
#JessicaKrug
:
1) Many Black and Latinx students on our predominantly white campus trusted her as a mentor, and now feel betrayed and gutted 2) The proliferating stories from so many WOC scholars who were attacked by Krug. What cruelty.
So I'm scheduled to teach about gun culture and the NRA in my democracy class today. I hope the classroom will be a place where we process our despair and think collaboratively about where we go from here, cause the status quo is a dystopian murderous hellscape
