On this day in in 1936, Lincoln, NE, set its all time record high temperature of 115°F & all-time record warm overnight low temperature of 91°F. Residents of Lincoln spent the night on the capitol lawn to escape the heat in their homes & apartments. @NWSOmaha @HPClimateCenter

I continue to see irrigation systems pumping water onto the lawns. STOP. You want the lawn to grow deep roots. It is cool, water need is less than 1/2 inch per week. You are washing out the nitrogen & will need more fertilizer to keep it green. You are wasting water & money.

Lincoln snowfall "perception vs reality". I had convinced myself that other than a few rogue years, there was a downward trend in total snowfall. We now have data back to 1897. Red dots are the trend line. There is no trend. There is a lot of year to year variability. @rustywx

It's official, Lincoln's high temperature of only 33°F was the coldest high temperature ever observed for April 15, breaking the old record of 41°F (with 132 years of data). Today's high was normal for mid January! Ouch. It was 82°F on Friday!

Daylight increases after the Winter Solstice, Dec 21, aka the "Shortest Day". The increase is very slow at first. We gained 2 seconds of daylight yesterday, 5 seconds today. By Dec. 31 we're gaining 37 seconds/day. By mid March we're gaining almost 3 minutes/day of daylight.

I noted on the @LNKToday show this am Neb frequency of tornadoes abruptly stopped rising after 2004 & is now much lower. I created a Neb Tornado page. I don't know why this has happened, but there are scientists researching this @gaarder @JackMitchellLNK

Yesterday's low temperature -31°F was 103 degrees colder than the record high for the date 72°F set 4 years ago. That made me curious. What are the greatest ranges between record highs & lows during the calendar year in Lincoln? Answer is below. I hope you find this interesting!

RECORD HIGH! At 3pm today Lincoln's reached 65°F setting a record high for the date (1887-2024, 138 years of data). That's 83 degrees warmer than it was 2 weeks ago. Mid afternoon the lawn was 64.7°F, nearby snow piles were 32°F & reflecting much of the incoming sun's energy.

100% confident that WINTER is behind us. Rapidly warming up. Yesterday's highs near 80°F in the area. No night-time freezes in the forecast & mainly RED warmer than normal next two weeks. Soil temperatures almost warm enough to start planting corn. @UNLGeography @UNLExtension

For some people, Spring means golfing, fishing, camping etc. Me? It's flying my drones. I can't wait any longer for Spring, so I launched a drone several days ago when it was sunny & this dreary afternoon. From above, Lincoln looks like an Arctic landscape.
