We discovered Thomas Cromwell’s Book of Hours…and it’s the book painted on Cromwell’s desk by Hans Holbein the Younger in his famous portrait of Cromwell!!

Solving a 500 year old mystery - A THREAD (1/9)
How excited am I to be holding our new discovery: Thomas Cromwell’s prayer book?! We have been DYING to share this with you all!!! On display
@hevercastle
until 10th Nov 🌟
I’m going to do my PhD! I am thrilled to have been awarded an

studentship to fund my doctoral research with
@mems_ukc
@UniKent
. I’ll be researching Books of Hours, with the aim to recover women’s voices from the margins of their books 📚So much to come!
My happy place!!! I am SO excited to share with you all what we’ve been working on for next year’s exhibition, it centres around my own research with our Books of Hours…and will be accompanied by a book featuring some of my research for the first time 👀✨
The Boleyn Apartment at
@hevercastle
opens today! I am incredibly proud of this new permanent exhibit in the castle - the re-design and re-furbishment of 4 rooms, which were once the private living rooms of the Boleyn family, who made Hever their primary residence.
#anneboleyn
I got a promotion! Thrilled to now be the Castle Historian (and Assistant Curator) at the dreamy
@hevercastle
. Yes, it’s a bit of a mouthful, but I love it 🥰
So thrilled to see our Cromwell discovery in The Times today!
@thetimes
With some brilliant quotes from my formidable research partner
@DrOwenEmmerson
- so proud ♥️
A slightly different view of the castle: this vice stair was added by Elizabeth/Thomas Boleyn to connect to their private family apartments upstairs ☀️

#AnneBoleyn
I simply adore this portrait of Hever’s other Anne -
#AnneofCleves
- displayed in our Long Gallery, a room that Anne had added to the castle whilst living at Hever for 17 years 💛
A year ago today, on the anniversary of Anne Boleyn’s execution, I revealed my groundbreaking research into one of her Books of Hours held
@hevercastle
, where I am now blessed to work. My research is ongoing, and Anne and her legacy continue to surprise and inspire me every day.
So thrilled to finally share our new exhibition: ‘Catherine and Anne: Queens, Rivals, Mothers’. Showcasing my research with Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn’s Books of Hours and celebrating what united, as well as divided, these two famous queens. Launching 8th February!!!
One month left to see Catherine of Aragon’s prayer book displayed next to Anne Boleyn’s, for the first time in 500 years!!! Come to
@hevercastle
before 4th June to experience it 👑👑
A special day spent at the National Portrait Gallery after its wonderful refurbishment, I particularly loved seeing their version of Holbein’s Cromwell…with the book we recently discovered on Cromwell’s desk 😍 The book itself is on display
@hevercastle
until 10 Nov!
A very exciting addition to our archive: the letters patent granting the sale of Hever Castle from Queen Mary I to the Waldegrave family in 1558! Look at that Great Seal 😍
Every Monday, I’m sharing snippets of my research on my Instagram (kateemccaffreyhistorian). Tonight, we’re looking at Anne Boleyn’s pretty rhyming couplet in Hever’s 1527 Book of Hours. Darn the careless later binder who sliced her signature! 📚
Reuniting the two Books of Hours of Queen Catherine of Aragon (left) and Queen Anne Boleyn (right) for the first time in likely 500 years!! This loan from

has been years in the making. Come and see them together at our

Our bejewelled pride and joy: Thomas Cromwell’s Book of Hours. Newly discovered after hiding in plain sight at The Wren Library for almost 400 years. Such an honour to have it displayed next to Anne Boleyn’s copy of the same book
@hevercastle
- until 10th Nov!
@DrOwenEmmerson
💖
It’s an incredibly rare survival: one of the only items to exist today that was once depicted in a Tudor portrait. My recent research found that Anne Boleyn and Catherine of Aragon both owned a copy of the same c. 1527 printed Book of Hours made in Paris by G Hardouyn. (2/9)
In celebration of the
#BecomingElizabeth
trailer released today, here’s a gorgeous image of an older Queen Elizabeth I in a 1625 printed history of her reign. I was thrilled to find this in our collection recently, prime Gloriana 👑
What a fabulous experience it was recording a podcast with a wonderful historian I have admired for such a long time
@sixteenthCgirl

Absolutely thrilled to finally announce that I will soon be starting a new job with

as Assistant Curator! The start of exciting things to come, working with the wonderful
@DrOwenEmmerson
and Alison Palmer 😍
This has been one of the biggest and most exhausting projects I have ever worked on - but I am so proud of how it is coming together, and we cannot wait to share it with you all at the end of March! 💜
I have always wanted to go to the 13th Century Sainte-Chapelle! There are 1,113 scenes depicted in the insanely beautiful 15 stained glass windows, telling the story of mankind from Genesis to Christ’s resurrection.
We can now reveal that not only did Henry VIII’s first two queens own a copy of this same book, but so too did Thomas Cromwell, the man who brought them both down…
@TracyBorman
has dubbed our discovery “the most exciting Cromwell discovery in a generation - if not more.” (3/9)
Is there anything better than the sound of rain when you’re snug inside?! Honestly one of my favourite things. Especially when watching the rain fall onto the castle moat 🌧🌧 volume up for this one!
#OnThisDay
487 years ago, Queen Anne Boleyn was executed. Here is her poignant ‘remember me’ inscription, signed with her name. I doubt she knew quite how many people would still remember her today 🤍
Cromwell’s book will be on display
@hevercastle
until 10th Nov - next to Anne Boleyn’s copy of the same printing. The book is on loan from The Wren Library

An absolutely dreamy day spent at the Château de Chenonceau in the Loire valley! Once the home of Henri II’s mistress, Diane de Poitiers, then taken and expanded by Henri’s wife, Catherine de’ Medici - this Château has to be up there with my all time favourites 🥰
With the advice of many experts in their field, we have confirmed the beautiful gilt and bejewelled binding on Cromwell’s book is original. It was created between Dec 1529 and 1530 by the goldsmith to King Francis I, Pierre Mangot, in Paris (6/9)
The provenance trail we have pieced together follows Cromwell’s book into the collection of his close friend Ralph Sadler, down to Sadler’s granddaughter-in-law Anne Sadleir, a prolific book collector who donated Cromwell’s book to the safekeeping of

Our gorgeous castle is looking rather naked after having had her Boston Ivy cut back for winter - it does expose her gorgeous tracery though, and look at that original portcullis peeping through!
This is an extension of my original work with these Books of Hours but it has been collaborative: Alison Palmer first noticed the similarities between the book and the one in the portrait +

This is just the beginning of this discovery and it’s far-reaching implications -

'Le temps viendra je anne boleyn' // 'The time will come, I anne boleyn'.
This hugely special inscription never fails to make me emotional! What do we think: is Anne foreshadowing, or is that just what we want to see?
