After a lot of delays (sorry everyone!) here is a free video briefing all about the changes to the

It’s been independently put together by a group of frontline early years practitioners, for free use by anyone in the sector.
This made my (World Book) Day.
Thank you

Time to thank my partner,

This honour is just as much about the people around me. Caroline’s support, incisive intelligence and love are at the heart of everything I do.
With love to Caroline and thanks from the deepest place in my heart.
Friday was my last day at Ofsted as an HMI and early education lead.
It’s been an honour to inspect so many schools in London.
I’m grateful for the hospitality of so many staff teams.

Interesting research suggests just how important Reception teachers are.
The most effective 2.5% of reception classes add higher lifetime earnings averaging between £2,000 to £7,500 a pupil, even after controlling for variables like family circumstances
We are ‘one early years’
We are all covered by the same statutory framework for the EYFS.
It’s absolutely wrong for
@educationgovuk
to divide us and offer home testing to school based provision alone.
I’m with you, PVI colleagues and friends.
Delighted to share the revised ‘What to expect, when’ for families with a child in

Amazing work by the expert group with the thoughtful leadership of
@Flissej
4/4 - the final risk is around funding. The government’s hourly rate doesn’t meet the actual costs. Nurseries and childminders try to close that gap through fees e.g for under 2s.
The new hourly rate must fully cover costs. Otherwise even more settings will become unviable.
A few quick responses to today’s announcement from the chancellor. Others will do the detailed analysis of the funding etc much better than me.
As a nursery school headteacher here are my 4 key points. A short 🧵
1/4 - there isn’t enough focus on quality in discussions. We should be talking about high quality early years education integrated with childcare.
That gets every child off to the best start.
It also supports working parents.
The updated
#EYFS
Statutory Framework applies from 4th September.
There are 3 changes to the Framework to be aware of.
Always check the full framework before you make any changes.

Never seen so many people supporting maintained nursery schools - united, determined, committed to the future of our schools.

Delightful saying goodbye to our children this afternoon now we have a Healthy School Street.
I used to see cars circling, idling and pulling up on our zig-zag lines.
Now I’m seeing children walking, skipping, and on bikes and scooters.

Thank you for all your hard work. For the support and compassion you’re showing to 1000s of children who’ve had a very difficult few years. It’s been tough: but you’ve made a difference.
The changes to Development Matters are minor.
I’ve summarised them on my blog + linked to a detailed document.
I don’t think any plans will need changing.
I completely understand how wiped out everyone who works frontline in
#earlyyears
is feeling.
2/4 with the focus on working parents, we’re layering on more disadvantages to those children who need most support. At the moment, children of working parents get a free 30 hours/week place. Where parents are not working or studying, it’s 15 hours/week.

3/4 - The gap between disadvantaged children and others might increase even further.
It’s already substantial.
Those gaps increase as children get older. They roughly double by the end of primary. They double again by the end of secondary.
This is such an important issue: poorer families only get 15 hours of funded early education and care. Imagine if children from poorer families only got half a school day in primary/secondary. These case studies from

Supporting children’s oral language in the early years is vital.
