You know the phrase “conservatism is liberalism going the speed limit”? That notion is derivative of the philosophy of Edmund Burke, the father of modern conservatism. Here I will explain what is Burkean conservatism and why it is wrong (but enticing): Conservatism is particularly suited for an opposition party with no power because that is in fact exactly how conservatism was born. Conservatism is attributed to the writing of Edmund Burke. Burke was writing before and after the French Revolution but his “Reflections on the Revolution in France” written one year after the Revolution began is his most important and enduring work. Burke is the first enlightenment (or counter-enlightenment) conservative and writes with the benefit of having lived through both the American founding and the French Revolution. The Revolution had a particular impact on Burke, as it did on most people living and thinking at that time. Burke, in part responding to the horrors of the French Revolution, attempted to produce a political theory that would enable gradual and imperceptible reform of govt. In many ways this is still on display at the heart of the old conservative movement. Burke thought that the excesses and horrors of the French Revolution was caused in large part by the fact that the FR relied too much on abstract theory, and was too untethered from both the practical, and the ways of life and tradition of the old French way of life. Burke was horrified by the utter disorder and chaos that sprung from the FR and predicted that a Caesarian character would rise up to quell the chaos (prescient of Napoleon). Burke agreed mostly with the need for reform in France, however, but thought that it should occur slowly. Thus, as alluded to earlier, Burke was speaking from the position of an opposition party in some sense. Burke was speaking on and about the French Revolution that was already well underway (although not concluded yet) but he was not in a position of power and influence, at least with respect to the Revolution in France. So Burkes position comes from a standpoint of disapproving of the actions of those in power, but having no power himself that he was required to act upon. In light of this, his position that changes should be held gradually and slowly makes much sense. But, what if Burke was in power? Burke demonstrates the directionless orientation of conservatism. Burke doesn’t point forward, or backward, he only points down, at the gas pedal, saying “a little more slowly please”. Burke dislikes the theory of the French Revolution and political theory in general, preferring a more “practical” approach. Burke thinks all abstract theorizing is wrong. He takes these as theories as utopian aims that cannot be achieved and will end in some terror like the French Revolution. He believes in practice over theory, or in other words, he believes in relying on that which has been empirically tried and the results have been experienced. Before you make a change based on your “abstract utopian theories” you should look very skeptically and move very slowly and cautiously. Caution and skepticism, in other words, can be considered the summation of Burkes conservatism. 1/3

Funny how people will tell you things like pre-k education is so important for kids (doesn’t matter at all) and then they’ll say that something like this (will screw this kid up for life) is perfectly fine

I would buy *so many* tickets to this movie. I would buy the dvds, and the digital version. Can I donate? I would donate.
Finally. Enough of marvel. Enough of remakes. The people want a resurge of historical/mythological films. Thoughts? Would you see this movie? Here's a brief history of the Siege of Malta:

@Howlingmutant0 Their “principles” are just losing.
“Im a principled conservative, I don’t believe in using government power to enact an ordered, virtuous society” Ok but my “principles” *are* to enact an ordered, virtuous society, not your Bush era defeatism doctrine.

It is not an exaggeration or hyperbole to say that the centrist lib types literally do not want to win. “Winning” is wrong to them. Winning is “power grabbing”. I mean this in the most good faith possible. I legitimately think they would agree with this.

@memeticsisyphus @chromotorque I highly doubt the results would show the same level of disgust for pictures of old people doing it. Maybe similar levels for *family* doing it, because that is different. But no, this is what Aristotle would call the natural law…

@PersikkaArts @memeticsisyphus Who said 30% of Gen z are queer? You know this isn’t true. You know this is false. It’s so ludicrous it doesn’t even make sense. Who did this “study”? Was it “queer journal for science”? What did they do? Poll their audience? Come on

Say what you will about democrats, they are masters of rhetorical framing. “Pay for tax cuts” Their ability to invert reality in their messaging is unparalleled
No one voted for eliminating the Department of Education to pay for tax cuts for billlionaires. No one voted for cuts to Social Security so that Tesla can continue to pay $0 in federal taxes. No one voted for Elon Musk.

The mistake I made was thinking that antiwoke accounts who saw the same cancer that I saw were good faith actors who would also be capable of identifying and calling out dishonesty and power grabbing on the right. But instead it turns out that most merely wanted to own the libs.
