Dan Carden is absolutely right in what he says. I know from conversations with many in the horseracing community that there is a strong desire to differentiate between traditional racing betting and the more harmful types of online casino content that we continue to see grow in profit from year to year. We at the Social Market Foundation also made this point in our recent report on tax reform, arguing that online casino duty should be increased while ensuring that horseracing is treated differently. There are ways to make this differentiation happen, all of which could be introduced by the regulator: the introduction of different types of licence, platform and wallet could apply to different types of betting and gaming. And yes, that also means revisiting the current affordability situation facing racing, which I am told has proven damaging to the sector. When it comes to clamping down on harmful online casino gaming, the horseracing community and campaigners for reform have a shared purpose. I expect to see more collaboration between them in the months ahead.
Liverpool Walton is home to Aintree Racecourse and, like many of my constituents, I have a passion for horse racing. It is vital that we tackle the most harmful forms of gambling. Far from posing a risk to the industry, the right reforms will protect racing into the future.

While this is a loss for the SMF, I know that Aveek will be a great asset to the Treasury. He is someone who cares deeply about both big ideas and little details, and it has been a privilege to work with him over recent years. The Government has gained a good man and a fine mind.
📢Big news from SMF: our fantastic Research Director is going to join the Treasury. We'll miss his intellect, leadership and humour but we're excited for what he does next. That means we're looking for a new Research Director. Learn more & apply:

@AndrewWoodman Alas, too often hypocrisy defines politics. A closed little world of people who put power over principles.
