As a queer person who grew up at a time when all sexual activity involved risk management, its fascinating watching people who told me to “just abstain” freaking out over missing a dinner party.
It's wild to me how many people endlessly consume media but then treat a pursuit of the arts as a hobby. Your favourite book or movie wasn't written on someone's lunch break.
I get that this situation is challenging. I’m exhausted and sad, too. But it’s hardly unprecedented and watching a quarter of the population act like nightmare babies because they’re not used to being inconvenienced is honestly worse than the virus itself.
You think not taking a trip, or wearing a mask, or going to a party is tough? Imagine having everyone in your life — from family members, to friends, to teachers, to doctors — telling you during your most formative years that acting on sexual desire *will* lead to your death.
Cool, cool. Can I vote against my taxpayer dollars going to support the Catholic school board? Because if y’all aren’t gonna welcome everyone, all of us shouldn’t be footing your bill.
Toronto’s like, “What if we give you LA traffic and Chicago weather but everything costs $3 million dollars and the urban landscape is just pot shops and condo showrooms.”
I still can't believe Ontario had an internationally recognized public health care system that is being dismantled and privatized so a woefully inept politician can pay his wealthy buddies and everyone is just letting it happen. Canadian passivity is wild.
I sincerely hope
@VaxHuntersCan
gets the Order of Canada after all of this. They changed the direction of the pandemic in this country and formed a missing link in the chain when our political leadership failed to step up. To call them heroes is an understatement.
It's hard to explain what late '90s/early '00s bohemian Toronto felt like in comparison to the contemporary city, but I think the evolution of 296 Brunswick from Green Room to the Annex Hotel provides the best visual example.
Love that CNN decided the replicate the agonizing gay experience of attending a NYE party hosted by a bunch of snobby gays who spend the night bitchily criticizing their guests. Such fun!
What I find most fascinating about Kendrick Lamar's incisive teardown of Drake is that it also doubles as an interrogation of Toronto in the 21st century. Wealth-obsessed, a city defined by performative authenticity and deep-seated insecurity, chasing clout but lacking substance.
@kylebuchanan
There’s so much wonderful practical work on this film that could have easily been CGI. Personally, it’s what made the film feel sorta timeless.
You can always tell when a person hits a certain threshold of wealth/fame because they start saying dumb stuff like this thinking they're espousing brilliant creative innovations and not just creating unsafe workplaces for their exhausted staff.
Bradley Cooper says "there's no chairs" on set when he directs: "I’ve always hated chairs on sets; your energy dips the minute you sit down in a chair. There's no video village."
He's also adopted Christian Bale's acting method: "I had heard stories about Daniel Day-Lewis. I
When Schitt's Creek wins a bunch of Emmys this weekend, let's make sure that the federal Conservative plan to defund the CBC is never too far from our minds.
@Duanaelise
The “hobbyist” thinking is the issue. Of course, it’s a great privilege to be able to pursue art and make a living off of it and many of us have juggled jobs to do what we do. But maybe we need to rethink the value of art and artists in a capitalist society?
The most appealing thing about Mr. Dress-Up was his low-fi, low-concept aesthetic. The crafts weren’t perfect, he owned his mistakes, and the show was never a vessel for shiny new products. I wonder if this style of simplicity will return to children’s programming.
As we celebrate the

Emmy nominations, let's not forget that such Canadian success stories happen through the funding of Canadian productions by Canadian broadcasters. We can be the best in the world, but that has to start with confidence at home.
This Reddit post (by a former Hot Docs staffer) outlines a fundamental issue plaguing arts and media organizations in Canada. A lack of succession planning, a bloated executive level unwilling to make concessions. less investment in Canadian content. This will kill the industry.
Now it’s just anonymous glass towers and expensive groceries. The city doesn’t feel like a place, and any sense of wonder, or the ramshackle mess of urban life is gone. It all feels predictable and empty, like an Excel sheet. I’m not sure I know what Toronto is anymore.
In January 2019, I pitched a modern Murdoch Mysteries sequel about a biracial lead, inspired by own complicated ancestry. I partnered with
@JessicaMeya
and, over the course of three years, we evolved the project together -- making it our own.

For whatever its faults, that building stood as a testament to the city’s identity as a ramshackle underdog, and a place where immigrants could build a better life. I remember watching Ed Mirvish giving out free turkeys to families on television as a kid. That felt like home.
Lloyd Robertson retired at 77, Peter Mansbridge retired at 69, but Lisa LaFlamme has her contract abruptly cancelled at 58? Kind of an odd way to treat a revered Canadian journalist.
Now I get to be the jerk who says things like “It’s an honour just to be nominated.” But it is! Big love to the entire SORT OF team — bilal & Fab,

@SphereMedia_tv
, the incredible room, cast & crew. This show is changing hearts & minds. What a gift!

It’s Pride Month. I’m happy to see your logos turn into rainbows. I’m happy that our allies, both privileged and marginalized, wave flags and retweet and offer up their safe spaces. I also want to talk about what this month means to me.
The best part of being a Canadian television writer is pitching an original to execs, being told that concept isn’t in line with the market, watching the same concept hit in the U.S., and then having that hit be used as a market comp during all future exec meetings.
We are not free until a QUEER lonely careerist leaves the big city to run their small-town family business during the holidays and inadvertently falls in love with a generically good-looking person from their past.
So the new chief of police was instrumental in the Pussy Palace raid and was also in charge of the missing persons unit made in the aftermath of Bruce McArthur? And is now in charge of the whole force? Yeah, queer people ain’t ever gonna be safe in Toronto.
Who is Myron Demkiw, Toronto’s new chief of police?
The 32-year Toronto Police Service veteran and acting deputy chief since 2020. He will assume the role Dec. 19.
In order to participate in an organized society, we adhere to a social contract that requires us to relinquish some of our personal freedoms for the benefit of all. This isn't a new idea or conspiracy theory. It's a moral and political philosophy that informs human civilization.
I guess I'll just keep sharing this screen cap the longer it continues to illustrate the uneven manner in which laws are applied to the citizens of our fair city.

Betty White has worked for so long that there's a whole first third to her career that no one ever talks about because the audiences that enjoyed that period of work are mostly dead.
Weird, Ford ringing this bell in the middle of the Greenbelt scandal. Almost like he wants to distract you from his own corruption by bringing up a hot button issue and throwing trans/enby kids under the bus. Despicable.
On stage at Ford Fest in Kitchener, talking about education, Premier Doug Ford emphasizes the importance of parents being informed when "when their children make a decision"
"It's not up to the teachers, it's not up to the school boards to indoctrinate our kids."

Remember when Tory *increased* the police budget just two weeks ago, despite widespread calls to defund? But now he needs to cut funding to transit, homeless services, and childcare because of a deficit? What a cool dude.
Toronto Mayor John Tory is asking the federal and provincial governments for funding help as the city stares down a $1.35 billion deficit. Potentially on the chopping block, he said, are: transit, homelessness services and child care.
Wild how when you cut social services, fire a portion of the workforce, make housing impossibly expensive, make food impossibly expensive, throw money at an invisible police force, and push the medical system to the breaking point, you end up with a city that is no longer safe.

HBO’s Somebody Somewhere is heartbreaking and funny and queer in a way that we never, ever see on television. It’s people in small-town Middle America, with mall churches, farm fields, and fluorescent office jobs, finding family in each other. One of my favourite shows of 2022.
When people say "that sort of thing could never happen in Canada," they showcase our country's most toxic trait — that we pretend our hate crimes don't exist.
I honestly hope that crime writers tackling the McArthur case recognize that the real story isn't in the rote behaviours of a serial murderer but in the police misconduct and systemic discrimination that allowed so many men to die.
Glad that if teachers teach kids about me, my partner, or my community, they risk punishment. Totally seems like democracy.
If you voted Ford, delete me. Because his government deleted me, and if erasing a segment of society isn’t of concern to you, I wish I had your privilege.
When people are all, “If Toronto is too expensive, just leave!” I’m like, cool — now please point me to the smaller municipalities that are both safe and have the community infrastructure for a brown non-binary gay person.
As a gay non-binary biracial person (mouthful, looking for new branding), it’s rare to work on a project that has allowed me to access all parts of myself in the creative process and never have to explain any of it. Sort Of absolutely gave me that gift.
I just want television in Canada to feel sustainable. For shows to be given the chance to grow and connect with audiences in a way that is in step with how people are consuming content, and to last long enough to reward investment. People want to love shows! Let them.
The worst part of all is that the impact of this nepo baby's bad decision making will be felt for generations. Everything about Toronto's current development boom is about profit over planning, with people paying through the nose for a dream that will never come to fruition.

Doug Ford, 2019: "We will spend $10.9 Billion on the Ontario Line to connect the Science Centre to the CNE."
Doug Ford, 2024: "We will spend $27 Billion on the Ontario Line to connect a condemned building to an Austrian mega spa."
A tough day for queer people of colour on both sides of the border. Whether it’s the language of politicians or the negligence of law enforcement, we need to recognize how systematic factors lead to violence and death in minoritized communities.❤️
Feeling very honoured and excited to work with the CFC/Netflix to develop a project that is close to my creepy gay heart. Big love to the other creators, and a special thank you to

for encouraging me to apply to this.

Trans people have always been here.
Drag queens have always been here.
Queerness comes from within, and exists in every community.
Letting people be themselves allows all of us to be free, and that’s scary to those who benefit from the suffering of others.
Be free. Happy Pride.

White was a true pioneer, working consistently from post-Depression radio through to the age of streamers. That's 𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑒 generations of fans, connecting us all the way back to our great grandparents. Just nuts.

Hey folx! I'm part of a queer anti-oppression organization in Canadian film and television that is spearheading a funded research project over the next twelve months. Curious if there are any queer creatives who would be interested in joining our org during this process.
When a government stops reporting COVID data, that’s not an indication that things are getting better. It’s removing information from the public record that can be used to hold that government accountable — especially in an election year.

What an honour it was to write a Heritage Moment on *the* Jackie Shane! Love to the entire cast & crew, the folks at
@HistoricaCanada
, the awesome producers, and Jackie herself — whose music helped me through a particularly rough patch of life. ❤️
Is it true? Did we lose Michelle Ross? What an honour it was to see her perform, a Black queen who held court in Toronto's drag scene since the mid '70s — taking up space in white rooms, and commanding our attention with love and an incredible stage presence. Rest in power.
Remember when 1940s Hollywood got slapped down in the Supreme Court for violating anti-trust laws by owning both studios and theatres? Because controlling production, distribution and exhibition was a bad thing for the market and filmmakers? Weird that doesn’t apply to streamers.
Omg, the smug Canadianess right now.

should be troubling not only because this directly impacts our neighbours, but because it signals a dangerous cultural precedent. Conservative politicians in our country are watching this very closely, and making plans.
