Today, a little girl broke me. She wanted to pray with someone but was shy. Her mom and Grandma encouraged her. The little girl was hesitant to speak but the Grandma said something that hit me in the heart: “it’s ok. He’s not gonna judge you, he’s gonna protect you.”

Shout out to everyone starting new traditions this Christmas or just getting through. Between my mom passing away and healthy boundaries with family, this is going to be a totally different holiday season for me. And it’s hard. Loss sucks. Grieving is hard. But you’re not alone.

I hear “it’s a local matter”, handled internally with members. If there wasn’t a decade + of intentional focus to grow your church’s brand and profile across the world, I would agree. But you built a HUGE congregation (at least a HUGE audience). You have HUGE responsibility.

This also makes me angry. Not just at the people who hurt children. That’s where the blame lies. But also at my fellow pastors who are so preoccupied with doctrinal purity, patriarchal bullshit and their own platforms that they miss quiet little girls who need help.

I have gotten some pushback for "attacking pastors" or assuming the worst. It's 100% worth it. Why? The wolves are attacking the sheep. If you're a shepherd, you can stand by and be polite to the wolves or protect the sheep.

And I know my theology probably sucks about these things and I’m definitely part of the problem, but my heart breaks for queer/trans kids who are hurting alone. Argue about what God thinks about it once we stop them from being harmed or harming themselves.

I sincerely hope the decision by the church to “suspend” Matt from the pulpit was an overreaction. It would be great if the accountability structure was too aggressive. That would be a relief. But we have no idea. And now he has “shown improvement” and on his way back.

Officials have not yet announced charges in the case. Virginia does not have a minimum age for prosecution of children, but the extraordinarily young age of the suspect is sure to raise questions about mental capacity and ability to understand what they did and that it was wrong.

Abuse is part of my story. I didn’t have to reckon with it as a child though. The grace of repressed memories meant I could deal with it as an adult. Which I’m actually thankful for.

Most “Christian” forgiveness culture is about comfort for the onlookers. Resolution of an issue. As opposed to restoration for the survivor or aggrieved party. And even the potential reconciliation between the people.

I’m approaching this from a spiritual perspective first. As Pastors, we are called to shepherd well and love God’s people. I’ve made many mistakes and hurt a lot of people, so I know it can hard to own your behavior. But it’s worth it. The truth sets us all free.

Yesterday was my Mom’s birthday; the first since she died last March. The boys ate strawberries with a “little” sugar on top, just like she would make them. Tonight, our family shared a slice of strawberry cheesecake and sang Happy Birthday. 🥺 We love you and miss you.

People want those who have been hurt to forgive because conflict is uncomfortable. As followers of Jesus, we’ve lost the ability, the desire and blessing of sitting with people in their pain. It’s a deeply Christ-like act.

Third, having the disciplined party (was she disciplined too?) speak from the pulpit and narrate his side of the issue is irresponsible and unnecessary. In the same breath Chandler is informing the congregation AND shaping their feelings.
