I’ve used sweets for emotional regulation for years. My doctor was concerned about my blood pressure, but I told her, “Look, right now, it’s sweets, or I become an alcoholic.” ➡️

Y’all, my dad is a saint. He got back from a 3-week trip and immediately jumped in to help me. My pain flare is making driving difficult, so for the past few days, he’s been coming over at 6:30 am to help 8yo get ready and drive him to school.
He’ll be 80 in June. He’s amazing.

She’s with Aslan now. I know Beren greeted her first and thanked her for taking care of his family for him. Now she can breathe easy and jump and lick everyone’s faces and meet all her wonderful new friends.

You know who church modesty rules/norms hurt? People like me. I’m extremely hot natured. I wear shorts and a tee or tank when most people are still in pants and jackets. Tonight I went to a church game event with a friend and was VERY aware that I was the only woman in shorts. ⬇️

Hey friends, this sucks a lot and I’d appreciate prayer: my concussion symptoms are worsening and I am going to the ER. (My hands won’t stop tingling/falling asleep and when I called just now, my doctor said to go immediately.) I hate hospitals and this is so stressful.

It might be fine. College Station might be changing. I know the student body is not a monolith, but the local politics kinda is, & that trickles down. Makes people feel okay being awful to people who speak up about being different.

So every time I had a panic attack or a bad day or my pain flared or I was stressed, I’d get Ben & Jerry’s.
And I believe with 100% certainty that those pints of ice cream saved my life on more than one occasion. I needed the dopamine, and that was the “safest” way to get it. ➡️

Thankfully, nobody told me this when I miscarried (VERY early; I didn’t even know it was a miscarriage until later).
BUT.
This message—that God hurts us to teach us things—is responsible for so. much. pain. in my life.
I HAVE to believe he’s better than that.
I think a lot of people don’t know what to say to women who have miscarried but one of the best things I’ve heard was an Orthodox Christian who said “God doesn’t need to take away your baby to teach you something” in response to the mothers looking for the reason why it happened.

I reached out to an Episcopal rector last week, and he emailed me back today. He was kind and gentle, and even went so far as to ask if my PTSD could handle meeting him at his church office, or if a coffee shop would be better.
I’m so thankful.

My beloved uncle Peter died yesterday morning peacefully at the age of 94.
He was my dad’s lifelong best friend. Peter officiated both my parents’ wedding and mine. He prayed for me every day of my life.

This time, I let myself get as many croissants as I wanted from the bakery that first weekend, instead of a cinnamon roll or a pastry. I made pasta and ordered pizza and ate things I loved. And when the sweets cravings came, I ate grapes by the dozens. ➡️

I’ve given up sweets before, but I’ve always been too strict with it. Instead of working with my body’s cravings, I shut them down. I’d give up carbs at the same time, or not allow myself anything that felt like comfort food. And of course it wasn’t sustainable. ➡️

We watched the Eras Tour Movie on New Year’s Eve—the first time he stayed up until midnight. We made a bunch of fun themed snacks and had an absolute blast! We like to shuffle Taylor when we are both working on art projects.

Pastries and ice cream are good, too. They’re amazing. And like I said, I know they saved my life. I’ll probably have some for my birthday and enjoy pie at the holidays, knowing that when the treats are gone, I’ll still have delicious foods that I love waiting for me.

And yes, I could just buy a bigger size, but often the sleeves are still too short & they’re cut shorter overall.

Welp, it looks like I’m going to have a very solitary Thanksgiving. 😞 I can’t be with groups because it’s overstimulating and makes me nauseous. I can’t really have spoken conversations. So I’m staying home, and my family will visit in short pockets, and bring me lots of food.

I know I shouldn’t care, but I haven’t been going to church for several years because of spiritual trauma. This was the first churchy event I’d been to in ages. Everyone was super nice. Welcoming. But I still felt out of place because I know the modesty message is everywhere. ⬇️

It’s ABSOLUTELY the body’s way of protecting us. Our nervous systems learned that fawning kept us safer. The body is doing just what it’s supposed to—helping us avoid what feels unsafe.
But it sure doesn’t feel “strong” like a fight response. I hate it.

Could y’all pray for me tomorrow? I’m having surgery in the morning and then I have to stay in the hospital for 24 hours for observation. My husband has to go home after I am out of recovery, so it’ll be a solitary chunk of time, even though I’ll mostly be asleep.

I’m gearing up to attend a new church tonight. I haven’t attended regularly in years. The last service I went to was a year ago, before the bulk of my spiritual trauma surfaced.

I filled out the application immediately. Rachel texted me right away. I went to visit that evening, and immediately fell in love. She’s playful & doesn’t love being held unless she’s sleepy, but I earned her trust after an hour & she came & settled down next to me, purring.

Luthien is irreplaceable. I don’t know when I’ll ever feel ready for another dog. But we’ve been wanting a cat for ages, and we’re so happy to give Marjorie a forever home.
