Got this lanyard in med school. One day, my surgical attending said I’d have more career success if I didn’t advertise my sexuality.
Today, as a very gay surgeon, I say🏳️⚧️HAPPY PRIDE🏳️🌈 to healthcare folks who exist on the vast spectrum of sexuality and gender identity/expression
Dear Danielle Smith:
I’m a Calgary OBGYN covering labour and delivery in Lethbridge today. This is a full-blown women’s health crisis and it’s about time you treat it as such.
Feel free to call our unit. I’m working for 48hrs. Happy to discuss strategies
#ableg
So in Lethbridge, Danielle Smith was asked how the local hospital can possibly deal with 2200 births/year with only one obstetrician. DS replied: "....(something) (something) home births."
Crushing news to wake up to in Alberta. As an OBGYN, I'm worried for my patients. As a gay man, I'm scared for my queer community. This isn't the Canada I thought I lived in.
New hospitals are fun because there are 7 different EMRs with unique usernames/passwords and you just want to order some ibuprofen but the buttons aren’t working so now you’re becoming pals with IT after your 3rd call of the morning
Spoke with CBC about what’s going on in Lethbridge. It’s a uniquely challenging situation, and my colleagues and I will keep sounding the alarm until a solution is found.
@hishertheythem
This is gross. I have no time for “LGB without the T” folks like you. You can count me in as one of those loud voices, cause if the "TQ ship" goes down, I'm absolutely going down with them.
Thanks everyone for helping amplify the message about the women’s health crisis in Lethbridge. I spoke with
@ABDanielleSmith
today. In our discussion, I emphasized the following 🧵:

@ABDanielleSmith
Nope, not a plant. You and I are on the same side. I’m just trying to advocate for my patients/community, and amplify the voice of others. The crisis is real and any conversation we can get going about solutions is one worth having.
3) This isn't only about maternal health. Gynecologic care (half the work of an OB/GYN) is being entirely redirected to Calgary. This is outrageous for a city of Lethbridge's size, and will lead to missed/delayed diagnoses and morbidity for patients.
Y’all cracking me up with some of these hateful replies. Stay mad 😚🌈
Pride is a protest, visibility matters more than ever. Thx everyone for all the love and support (and to the iconic
@purdy_eve
for gifting me this lanyard many years ago)
4) We need help now. The solution? An immediate increase in funding/prioritization of women's health for the region. Danielle Smith's team have committed to visiting Chinook Regional Hospital to learn more. We look forward to continuing the conversation there.
1) Chinook Regional Hospital services a population of over 150,000, with 2200+ deliveries per year. In the past, the hospital staffed 7-8 OBGYNs (which was arguably not enough). There’s currently one.
2) To survive, Lethbridge is requiring OBGYNs from across Alberta, as well as many out-of-province, to provide emergency short-term coverage. As
@mheyns
said, it's only a matter of time until something avoidable and catastrophic happens.

Learner wellness should be facilitated by building a supportive, inclusive, welcoming workspace and giving medical trainees the time and space to do what we each individually know makes us well.

You know how wellness could be improved in the world of CBME?
Less of "you don't have enough EPAs!" (the

feedback we're constantly receiving in this brand new assessment model that literally launched 1 year ago)
More of "let's talk about the ones you have!"
A cluster randomized controlled trial of a novel mindfulness curriculum found no impact on pediatric intern burnout, mindfulness, or empathy. Ongoing research is needed to identify interventions that decrease burnout among trainees.
@FraimanYarden
Today I was a victim of Hate Speech in Calgary.
I was excited to hear of a Pride Walk that was being painted so went to take a look and the verbal attack ensued.
The police have reached out and I will pursue this under the criminal code of Canada.
@laura_goodliffe
Me: *opens lunch bag*
Attending: *leans over* have you had your wellness EPA signed off yet?
Me: er...no....
Attending: okay I see an apple which is good but the redbull and four-day-old thai takeout are below expectations... you’re not ready for independent practice
Me: 😐

agreed! Plus, putting wellness in CBD wouldn’t subvert the hidden curriculum. It’s a showy way to say “look we care!” while ignoring systemic issues, providing no additional supports, and once again placing the onus solely on the learner
