So…I have this idea…
Hi-Fi Rush was John Johanas' dream game, he pitched the idea in 2017 after finishing work on The Evil Within 2.
The game was in the works even before Gamepass and the Microsoft acquisition! But it worked out very well in the end.

Thank you for calling this out, but it has to be said that despite what people assume this was really really hard to pull off and required a ton of experimentation and adjustments.
I wouldn’t hold it against any developer who doesn’t do it like we did.
I am so thankful Hi Fi Rush is a modern AA game with actual flat cel shading.
So many "Cel Shaded" modern games cheaply add an outline and call it a day. XIII Remake or Pro Skater 5

Everyone should give extra props to our modeler Ishikawa-san for making the monumental task of this Roquefort model.
We talked about how this is by far one of the most complex things we’ve done in our games, and it shows as we (barely) cheat and it looks damn awesome in-game

Glad this is being appreciated. The core aspect to the game was accessibility to feeling good, even when if you may not have the musical background or understanding, but also limiting UI to feel like YOU are in control.
The best thing about Hi-Fi Rush is that even if you're not super tight on timing, because the attacks still land on beat, it still feels freakin awesome. It totally corrects one of the big issues with rhythm action games.
