@aejochim @marcportermagee @jeremylsinger In our report (where this data is drawn from) we also indicate that the average scale score is of *all* students at that school, regardless of whether they receive Title 1 services or not. It is a school-level variable, not a student-level one:

@alexanderrusso @marcportermagee Not enough data available (which is also why we did not have any data for Catholic schools with more than 25% receiving Title I)

Also I don't know why we would be bragging about the fact that Catholic school teachers get paid... *checks notes* ...80% of their public school counterparts' salaries, have little to no pension options, and have less funding to support students with special needs

A lot of people seem to not realize that some students are more expensive to educate because they have higher levels of need that require additional staffing. Private schools simply do not accept those students in the first place.

Selection bias issues aside, I’d argue there’s a sector-specific issue with achievement gaps re-opening. The Catholic school sector actually made some progress in closing those on the 2022 #NAEP, only to lose it in 2024.

Here is Black student performance by school type on the recently released 2024 #NAEP Result: On average, Black students in Catholic schools are 1.0 grade levels ahead of Black students in charter schools and 1.4 grade levels ahead of Black students in traditional public schools

It also looks like SES data is coded a little bit differently this time around and there isn’t enough data for Catholic schools to disaggregate by this. Bummer.

@CodingWCulture The Strip is…not great. Downtown Vegas and Fremont Street is a real vibe. And the food in Chinatown is insane. Give it another go sometime! (also Park MGM is one of the only strip casinos that is smoke free. And it’s awesome)

My plea to any would be education reformer is simple; Complicate the story. If your reform strategy is simple, it probably won’t work. If the narrative you tell to advance it has heroes and villains, it’s probably wrong.

Great story here on the single largest gift given to Catholic schools in the United States - and one sign of reform in Catholic education that is expansive, inclusionary, and spirit-filled.

“What if we had the resources to be able to imagine, plan, and fulfill a vision for Catholic schools, what might that look like? And in our case, the ‘if’ has been given to us. We have an opportunity to have those conversations.”

@jdflynn Last week, we interviewed someone on Big Shoulders Fund’s schools leadership team and one of the elements driving their planned work in Gary is looking at whole system/whole community initiatives. Engaging social services, elevating the capacity of all schools, etc
