Last night (10/8), the UNC Graduate & Professional Student Government (GPSG) voted overwhelmingly in favor of passing no confidence resolutions for both Provost Clemens & Chancellor Roberts. This is the accompanying press release.
More images from my experience at UNC yesterday. This officer spat on the Palestinian flag, called students f*gg*ts, punched a female student in the face, threatened a student by saying “you’re next,” and grabbed the student in the images by the neck. His name is Sgt. Darin Lee.
I’m LIVID.
@unc
sent out a disgusting email to try and discredit the Gaza solidarity encampment, using pictures from AFTER police raided & decimated the encampment to make it look like we made the mess. Organizers worked TIRELESSLY to keep things organized.
@UNC_SJP
A student emailed me w/ the subject line "all hell has broken loose." They've been sick for days, now experiencing chest pains, and can't get a COVID test. UNC also just alerted them that they have to find new homes immediately bc dorms are shutting down. 1/2
Hey, just a reminder that mental health care at UNC is still in shambles and all those students seeking help a few weeks ago (and many seeking helping before) are still sitting on waiting lists.
@JeffJacksonNC
Just so everyone is clear: Black women did this in Georgia. We owe them our gratitude and praise. If we want to see the same in North Carolina, white folks need to step up to empower and support Black women.
Imagine being 17 & marrying a 33 year old John Milton, just to have him write a whole damn treatise about how divorce should be allowed if a dude thinks his wife is boring two years later.
As of today,
@UNC
has 137 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Move-in Day hasn’t even happened yet. UNC students continue to call for white, tenured faculty to strike now.
My mom told me yesterday she has COVID. She couldn’t smell her jasmine flowers, and knew. She wept. I’m numbly processing the reality my mom might not be here in two weeks, realizing that I’ve been preparing for this ever since she told me she wouldn’t get the vaccine.
One of my students is an RA. This morning, they told me several students in their dorm were reporting fevers and other symptoms. They said they feel like it’s only a matter of time before they get sick too. UNC knew this would happen when they re-opened campus. Remember that.
I just want to remind everyone that, while other student-run news sources have fought the good fight,
@dailytarheel
chose to erase and ignore the violence against
@unc
students by
@UNCPolice
and fraternity boys like
@PiKappaPhi
.
@ErinInTheMorn
Unfortunately the Girl Scouts has a partnership with Raytheon—a manufacturer of war weapons. I can’t support them while this partnership continues. 😞
Tell your students to rest. And make sure your course makes it possible for them to do so. And, if you're teaching at
#UNC
, STOP ASSIGNING WORK ON WELLNESS DAYS FFS.
I hate to even think about it (although it's literally all I think about) my child become very ill from COVID, I want to be VERY clear:
@UNC
is to blame. Not my students. Not the Chapel Hill community. Not my child. Not my child's school. UNC of Chapel Hill.
Would love to know if anyone got pics of me being pepper sprayed directly in the eyes. I’m okay, thanks to the incredible kindness and quick-thinking of the protesters who made sure I got out of the crowd and stayed with me until I could see again.
@UNC_SJP
Please share widely! UNC Students for a free Palestine are occupying the South Building! So far it’s been a struggle to even get the cops to allow water inside. This is a public building at a public university! 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸
UNC admin wants to pit us against each other by claiming withholding grades hurts students. Meanwhile, UNC sends violent cops to brutalize students. Don’t believe their propaganda. Hands off our students! Hands off Palestine!
NEW: UNC SJP is asking faculty to withhold grades to "demand amnesty" for students arrested and suspended last week.
UNC Provost Chris Clemens told deans today that his office "will support sanctions" for instructors who participate in the effort.
@MemeIndustrial
The cop dragging a student by the hair is
@UNCPolice
’s Rasheem Holland. He has a history of violence against students. He also brutalized a student in a wheelchair just before this moment.
According to admin In a meeting w grad students yesterday, the majority of COVID cases at
@unc
are occurring among vaccinated. If you’re vaccinated, please get weekly tests (or more).

@no_good_wyfe
Thank you for this. I saw so many cameras and journalists. I know they saw police assaulting students. Shamefully silent on reporting it though.
@MemeIndustrial
After he threw a barricade on top of a student in a wheelchair,
@UNCPolice
’s Rasheem Holland STOOD on the barricade. He then dragged a student by the hair, tackled a tiny protestor to the ground, and pepper sprayed multiple students directly in the face
Feeling honored, excited, and a little sheepish to share that I’ve been offered the Bullitt Club Founder’s Fellowship for a 3 month residency through
@WilsonLibUNC
. My project is on early modern practices of giving and receiving care. Maybe I’m a real grad student after all? 🙂
The food students are given in the
@UNC
quarantine dorms. they’re also instructed not to leave if they hear the fire alarm. This is all just fine, I guess.
I don’t think we’ve confirmed this student’s gender. But the officer is Rasheem Holland of
@UNCPolice
. He brutalized every student he encouraged on 4/30, including a student in a wheelchair. I was maced by this man, & count myself among the lucky ones at
@UNC
that day.
When
@unc
admin told us that the majority of positive cases were occurring in vaccinated individuals, the numbers of students seeking voluntary testing rose & we asked unc to increase testing capacity. In response, the university sent out the suggesting that we…test less.
Last semester at UNC was heartbreaking and traumatizing. We do it again, with not one substantial improvement. Happy FDOC posts are like a punch in the gut. My only goal is to protect myself, my peers, and my students.
EDITORIAL: "Resources for students are dwindling, and the University has failed to implement every policy tool made available to it: a two-week virtual delay, a vaccine mandate and safety nets for infected students," the Editorial Board writes.
@DrSamiSchalk
@sameralatout
My god. The way you care for your students and then each other. I can’t tell you how moved I am. Praying for your healing and for our collective liberation. 💗🇵🇸
I’m happy to report that they are now with family, but still waiting on test reports. However, we should know that there are many others who are not so fortunate to have a place to go under such short notice. UNC created this mess. 100% avoidable.
@rgay
I try to frame it as the point where we need to reevaluate the course/student’s goals & objectives and consider if/how it’s possible to fulfill those in the time left. If yes, then we create an adjusted plan for the semester. If no, we talk about other options.
Very cool to feature housekeeping staff in this post, seeing as
@UNC
is demanding they risk their lives and work much harder without hazard pay and with insufficient PPE.
Life at Carolina typically slows during the summer. Not this year.
With move-in starting Monday, campus continues to buzz with activity. See how people from all departments, offices and divisions across
#UNC
are doing their part to ensure a safe semester:
@StuartMcmanus
@DanDavidPrize
You should be ashamed. Israel is committing genocide. Anyone with an ounce of morals would reject a prize from this institution.
The abuse we face as graduate students isn’t just sexual. I wonder how many of us are thinking about how we might be safe enough to share our stories once we’ve graduated.
the person who was abusive (verbally) to me during my PhD at UPenn was widely known for precisely that. She was the ex of my advisor, who passed away shortly after I started working w/him. A few months later, she failed me at my oral exams
The full sentence: “Aged 33, inexperienced w women, and idealistic about marriage as in essence a union of minds and spirits, he [Milton] married a young woman of SEVENTEEN…” I have a bone to pick w the editors on this. 🙄
Y’all the Norton editors really did describe Milton this way: “Aged 33, inexperienced with women…” As if poor inexperienced Milton married a teenager because he just didn’t know any better? 🤔
@theADHDacademic
I feel like this is spoken from the perspective of a neurotypical folks. For me, I’m EXTREMELY self aware but still manage to get social interactions wrong.
Re: extending grace to students: this is absolutely a laborious choice--one made more so by the pandemic & policies from universities like
@unc
that offer virtually no support (financial or otherwise) to encourage or support instructors for teaching this way.
@renees1969
@UNC
UNC students, grad workers, and faculty have pleaded for years now that UNC improve its mental health services and address its toxic climate. If you think this is about students not seeking help, then you must not be aware of what is actually happening right now.
I told my students to leave any situation where they don't feel safe, including classrooms where mask policies aren't enforced. HOWEVER, this is a bigger risk for some students than others. Faculty, protect your students from this choice. Enforce mask policies in your classrooms.
My heart is heavy for UNC students, especially BIPOC students, but I’m glad
@nhannahjones
made this choice. I’ll say it again:
@UNC
doesn’t deserve her.
Does this language imply that UNC won't be held responsible if I die? Reminder that 1.) UNC requires students to sign this in order to enroll and 2.) UNC students are calling on white, tenured faculty to strike now.
My most recent correspondence with the John Donne Society. I ask them to, at the very, very least, acknowledge the murder of
@itranslate123
, poet and scholar of Donne’s poetry.
It’s the first Monday in second week of classes at
@UNC
, and the student quarantine dorms are full. Students are being shipped to hotels instead. We have yet to hear from
@KevinGuskiewicz
. This was entirely avoidable.
@dailytarheel
finally posts a single image of police brutality but fails to contextualize. This is the FIRST thing
@UNCPolice
did when arrived on the scene of NONVIOLENT PROTESTERS. Note how close Chancellor Roberts is as they attack students. Publish the rest of the photos, DTH!
Of the things I said to my students today, one of them was to apologize for the reprehensible displacement of blame onto the
@unc
undergraduate population. Don’t fall for this. Direct your anger at those in power who let this happen, who demanded it happen.
Kind of embarrassing how I thought North Carolina would be safer than Alabama, in retrospect. Grad students, your departments doing anything to support you while the state you’re in burns? 👀
@AcademicChatter
@joan_of_waystar
@dailytarheel
@UNCPolice
We need more pictures! There was a lot of brutality, physical and words, against encampers. Especially hard when it was dark in the early morning in that first attack
BREAKING: In an email to residents, Carolina Housing has announced that all buildings in the Kenan Community and Upper Quad Community, and Craige, Everett, Lewis and Horton residence halls will close. Residents must submit their reassignment preferences by Friday.
@JJRodV
In a similar position. 50 lbs lost while feeling sick most of the time. I’ve had trouble even getting doctors to take my weight loss seriously. Wishing you peace and healing!
I was removed from the John Donne Society listserv today without any comment from org leaders. If you’re in this group, you need to know what just happened.
I was rebuked by a senior scholar for using the “big word” of genocide and told I was not educated enough to speak on the matter. This is my reply. At the end of this message, I call on the leaders of the JDS to condemn the atrocities in Gaza.
A great start to
@FolgerResearch
’s Orientation to Research Methods & Agendas. The hands-on experience of digging into this 1768 translation of Ovid’s Epistles was such a nice break from the virtual world we’ve been limited to. Thank you,
@billybakkus
for the donation!
@fivefourpod
Thank y’all for everything.
@UNC
hasn’t gotten as much attention, but our chancellor took our protests as an opportunity for a disgusting publicity stunt. He came out w at least 20 cops who immediately began brutalizing students, including a student in a wheelchair.
Too much loss at UNC. Teachers, please encourage your students to care for themselves this weekend. Whatever work you have due can wait.
@unc
, when will you acknowledge the crisis on our hands?
UNC first-year Sophie van Duin created a COVID-19 contact tracing website.
Slips of paper taped around campus encourage students to report COVID-19 exposures using a QR code, which leads to the website UNςTrace.
As you recommend for students in distress to contact CAPS, please also make sure they know that CAPS works with UNC PD. No student should be further traumatized by the arrival of police in a moment of crisis.
@RileyTX
So…because I don’t buy into this bs you’re selling about a so-called radical who’s too chicken shit to call a genocide a genocide then poses in earth day pics with the man committing genocide, I’m the one who has to prove I’m actively resisting said genocide? 🤔🇵🇸
"But what if they're just lying to get out of class?" 1. Trust your students. Policing has no place in good pedagogy. 2. Does it matter? They don't owe you access to their private lives. Give them all the chances to do the work in a way that meets their needs.
We’ve got to have real conversations about how impossible it is to be motivated as a grad student when your institution makes no attempt to hide its investment in white supremacy and overall contempt for student wellbeing.
@UNC
I’m a UNC grad student instructor forced to teach F2F w an unvaccinated child at home. Bc I’ve been denied hardship parking, I’ll have to ride a crowded bus to/from my of campus car. This post is flagrant display of how little UNC cares for me and my peers.
Hey
@UNC
since we don’t have any idea which water sources on campus are safe for drinking—maybe now’s a good time to, you know, either pause operations or at least give us some safe water to drink while on campus?
@KevinGuskiewicz
@dailytarheel
@newsobserver
@melnickjeffrey1
These are the brave flag defenders of
@UNC
. They attacked a solitary pro-Palestinian protestor. I met him after. He was covered in blood and clearly suffering a head injury.
Had to pause my teaching this morning because the kids were screaming and crying. The crisis? My youngest accidentally deleted our Animal Crossing Island. Things are rough around here this morning. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers as our family mourns. We will rebuild.
