Dang... I never bothered to translate most of the captions, but I still enjoyed having some fun/cute videos in my timeline every day. Your service was greatly appreciated 🫡
As of today, Waymo is opening its rider-only Downtown Phoenix taxi service to the public! This means that anyone can download the app and take a spin in the I-PACEs. They also invited me out to record some videos, the first of which will be up shortly!
As promised, an hour and 21 minutes of Waymo full self driving, no safety driver up front! (Some self-chosen ride highlights timestamped in the description)

Also, did you know
(Cause I didn't, until I was watching that episode of P&F where they do the gag of showing the VA's faces and it blew my mind)
The Waymo Driver adjusts to dynamic situations like construction, road closures, and traffic to get riders where they’re going safely and efficiently everyday.
Many kind words today, thank you all. :) And of course, a special thanks goes to the team at Waymo for making this dream reality, and for letting me record video. (Not to mention publishing the mistakes) Shows a huge level of confidence in your product not many others can match
No video since it was a private ride with extended family (and I still don't have a functional GoPro back yet) but I just saw it make this turn with no light to protect it, and a bus blocking the view where the yellow dot is. Pretty sure that's new behavior, very impressive!

I used to work at 42, and I'm pretty sure I was sitting in a conference room on break when I first watched the video where you said you'd "give your left nut" to see an Intel fab. This day has been long awaited, I'm so so excited to see your reaction :D
Testing Waymo at the airport terminals tonight--in the two brief loops I made, there were like 5 or 6 cars picking up and dropping off people. Saw someone loading luggage in the back too. So cool to see real people using it for real travel purposes!! :D
@chiekku
@ShitpostGate
I'm a Walmart cashier, I'll let you in on maybe partially why they don't.
Management REALLY REALLY does not like when an employee is "doing nothing." So the moment the lines ease up (store is less busy early and late) the extra cashiers are sent to do something else.
Thanks to
@danjmitchell
for inviting me out to Scottsdale see the
@nuro
R2 vehicle and answering all my questions! Can't wait to get my groceries delivered like this. (Also saw a
@Cruise
vehicle in person for the first time on my drive back 👀)
Never gotten to see this before today--how the Waymo driver sees and reacts to an emergency vehicle ("reacts," we were stopped at a traffic light) The lights in the car turned on and I believe the doors unlocked as well, very well thought out

OUT NOW! My interview with
@Waymo
Product Management Director Chris Ludwick!
Watch here:
This is the final video in this little series, so once again thank you to everyone at Waymo who made this possible! It was an amazing opportunity!
Waymo Chandler and Downtown Phoenix service areas. If Chandler's expanded by just one more mile north, they would be connected by light rail. Still: very exciting!
Had zero idea this was going to go huge and turn into a PR microburst, my apologies to Waymo. Think I ruined my already slim chances of getting a job there... target Intel as a backup then? (for those typing "hey don't you already-" a contracting position doesn't count lol)
Dear Waymo,
Please please please consider adding a queuing system for cars; yet again I've gone to make a trip with everything worked out in advance, then it cancels the moment I hit request--all progress is lost. Then the refreshing ratrace begins. Not a great look :/
100 episodes! It's been one heck of a journey. I could not possibly list the huge amount of people involved in making this possible, but know that I appreciate it dearly. Thank you so so much for your support. ❤️
Cheers to the next 100! ;D
IT HAPPENED--I went to SF! And here's the first video:
HUGE thank you to
@kevinchen
for making time to meet up, and to
@ArrayLabs
for sponsoring this series!
Headed to the airport last week; didn't have the heart to tell the Lyft driver why I only wanted a short ride from my house to a random neighborhood west of the railroad tracks. 😂
Sorry guy, you were great though!
SF, who’s ready to ride? 🚘🤖
After receiving the driverless pilot permit from the
@californiapuc
, Waymo One is opening to members of the public in San Francisco. Available 24/7—without anyone in the driver’s seat:
This Series is Over (at least for now) | JJRicks Rides With Waymo
#70
Thank you all for making this the wildest and most exciting 10 month ride I could have ever asked for. I'll see you at the I-PACE launch :)
If you guys haven't seen this Waymo video yet, get ready for:
• Driving in the rain, wet roads
• Crossing guard with hand signals
• Disengagement
• Absolutely ridiculous construction.
• Peek at the control app
• Emergency vehicle
• And more!
Waymo 5th gen I-PACE tackles unprotected left that I as a human driver would probably to avoid at all costs -- in the dark. (From opening day ride with
@Michael77285783
, used with permission)
(Video too long for twitter)
@MishaalRahman
What would be legendary was if google's network supported adding apple devices manually. Like, I have a mac (but pixel 7) and my airpods pro 2 WILL NOT show up in Find My. (endless troubleshooting etc) If I could say "hey pixel this paired device is my earbuds, spread the word"🔥
JJRicks Rides With
#Waymo
is back, and here to stay!
Plus I've FINALLY perfected the camera setup! (after 73 vids)
Shifting to a once-weekly release cadence to keep it sustainable (college, moving AZ↔️ID every few months)
Hope you enjoy the new series!
Took my first Waymo ride in a while, with a safety driver since it rained last night. Looks like they removed the large tablet screen up front, replaced only by a Pixel with the Ops app. (Still have the
@seeingmachines
guardian of course)
This change means we lost a few things:
There is truly nothing quite like the serene feeling of smoothly gliding down the street in an electric autonomous vehicle, especially after sunset.
Blissful relaxation....
Introducing: !
Search the entire back catalog of Waymo videos for specific events such as disengagements, three point turns, unprotected lefts, roadside assistance appearances, etc. Timestamps included for every video--all in one place.
@LinusTech
Heyo, not a sponsorship offer, but an AV enthusiast just reaching out to say if you ever want to do a video about waymo self driving cars, or not do a video and just ride in one at all, I'm in their public program and can bring along anyone I like for a ride! :D
Possibly the best video yet, so good that Waymo wrote an official statement explaining the events. Premiering tomorrow, don't miss it 👀
#TimelineTuesday
Holy cow this rocks
It'll never ever ever happen, but if they added transparency by putting that little decision-tree popup on the rider screen and showed what's happening fleet-response-wise in realtime, that would be ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!
We’ve built the Waymo Driver to operate without the need for human intervention, and in order to do that sometimes, it requires additional context from our fleet response team. See their role in helping us safely scale:
@DiscussKing
@Jauwnio
Am I using it wrong, or is Finder just as bad as explorer.exe.
I had to download Find Any File to actually search anything on my Mac, and that works fine
According to the
@USDOT
, someone runs a red light every ~20 min. Proud of the work by our team to make roads safer, like in this situation where the
@Waymo
driver in fully-auto mode (no human in the driver’s seat) safely reacts to a car blowing through a red light in Phoenix.
Quarterly (ish) Chandler Waymo update: everything looks to be pretty much the same. Though I can't confirm, it appears as if testing operations in Arizona have scaled way way down within the last few months. Only time I see AVs around here anymore is whenever I call one.
@CDisillusion
@Blender
Even for just a little Twitter video, you put a perspective tilt, vignette, a nice bit of depth blur (thingy idk) and a smooth fade out at the end.
Respect
So I kind of got a little bit too excited and crashed the
@May_Mobility
launch party. 😆 Turns out I have to be an approved early rider, that's on me. I'll be back though. Still, very cool to meet some industry contacts. Thanks to them for being kind ♥️
@Mrwhosetheboss
I know they're kinda joking but like, this comes off as childish and insecure.
I have a MacBook, Google Pixel, and Samsung Tab, and I enjoy the unique utility of each in their own right.
Not everyone has to have the same phone as you.
Might be crazy but I feel like they were getting better with efficiency, then all of a sudden they cranked up the detour knob to 11. Videos are getting stale. Doesn't matter which destination or pickup I choose, it takes the exact same routes. Only the last bit varies.
